VEREENIGNG. - It was early in the morningon Wednesday when the Vereeniging taxirank was moved from its original position.‘Scrap vultures’ found themselves faced witha ‘feast of steel’. They helped themselves tothe taxi rank’s steel. It took them only two

days to destroy the old rank and take everybit of steel there.Sedibeng Ster was deployed to the scene

during the action of the scrap vultures, whodid not even mind the presence of a journalist. They just went on with their work and evensmiled for the camera.

When asked how much would they makeper day they claim that theywouldmake abouta thousand if they worked well, depending onhow fast they were. The rank was infested bythe scrap vultures and alleged ‘nyaope boys’,some of whom worked without tools whileothers used hammers and grinders, which we-

re the main tools of the day.“We don’t mind being interviewed but the

bottom line is that we are taking the steel,”said one scrap-seller. They added that they areunemployed and the taxi rank steel came inhandy since it was the beginning of the year(Asinamali): “We don’t have money.“God cannot give you by hand but this is

a blessing for those who have to work hardto survive on the street. Christmas do not co-me every day,” says a scrap seller.Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda

says a case has not been opened though therehad been some concerned complainants.“As things stand the property belongs to Se-

dibeng District Municipality, who have notlodged any kind of complaint,” says Funda.

VEREENIGING. – The alleged maladminis-tration and the pressure mounting at the Em-fuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) Parks andCemetery revolving around financials, hasapparently resulted in a worker committingsuicide with her firearm. The deceased, Isabel

Basson (55), was a Senior Financial Adminis-trator. She allegedly committed suicide whileon duty last week. The incident took placeat the offices of Doves at Rebel Street in Ver-eeniging.

A suicide note in the hands of the policewas found on the crime scene. Police do not

want to divulge its contents pendingfurther investigation. Unconfirmedrumours from a reliable, well placedsource was that the deceased allegedlyinformed some of her co-workers thatshe could not handle the pressure atwork any longer. This comes afterELM accountants demanded the fi-nancial books for audit.

Apparently for the past years, nomoney was being deposited into ELMaccounts. Basson was apparently re-quested by her senior to prove whathappened to the money she had beenreceiving from the undertakers. Im-mediately when an audit was institut-ed, all hell broke loose.

No one would take the blame forwhy the money was not deposited intothe ELM account.

Apparently the deceased could notstand the heat and wanted to blow thewhistle on some of her colleagueswhowarned her that she would be doingthis at her own peril. This apparentlyled to more and more threats aimed atthe deceased. “All eyes were focusedon her as senior administrator,” saida source. She even informed some ofthe co-workers that ’enough isenough’ as her chest could not handleit anymore.

Stanley Gaba, ELM head of communica-tion, confirmed that Basson was an employeeof the municipality. She had been employedfor the past five years since the municipalitytook over the function from Rainbow Ceme-teries (Lekoa Cemeteries), said Gaba. She re-portedly suffered severe depression andstress-related diseases. “We need to rally be-hind her efforts, her colleagues and every-body else, to bury her with dignity,” he con-cluded.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Emfuleni Lo-cal Municipality (ELM) has constituted adisciplinary process against an Arts andCulture official who is implicated in cor-ruption.

The hearing will sit next Wednesday(February 11) in the Trust Bank Boar-droom in Vanderbijlpark.

This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster byELM head of Communications StanleyGaba after this newspaper ran a series ofarticles regarding the Arts and Culture offi-cials who claimed hefty amounts of moneyfrom the ELM as payment for artists. They

did this while allegedly taking a third of themoney for themselves. Sedibeng Ster has le-arned that only one official will appear beforethe disciplinary committee.

In the statement sent to Sedibeng Ster, Ga-ba says the municipality notes with seriousconcern issues relating to fraud and corrupti-on that are increasingly reported in the news-papers.

“The municipality takes a dim view of the-se activities, and therefore urges the commu-nity and everyone else to report such mattersurgently as they arise.

We urge all the witnesses to cooperate bygiving truthful evidence with the intention to

assist the municipality to conclude suchmatters speedily,” says Gaba

Gaba says the outcome of such disci-plinary processes will be communicatedas soon as the process is concluded. Healso appreciates the role of local mediain reporting these unnoticed matters.

To date, history has indicated that theELM is one of themost troublesomemu-nicipalities in Gauteng Province when itcomes to corruption.

In fact, this dates from the time of for-mer ELM Mayor Dikeledi Tsotetsi, whospecifically instituted investigations in-to such allegations.

Disciplinary hearing scheduledfor ‘corrupt’ ELM official

Emfuleni Local Municipal head of Communications Stanley Gaba says the municipality notes with serious concern issues relating to fraud and corruptionthat are increasingly reported in newspapers.

Had I been standing next to ANC SecretaryGeneral GwedeMantashe during themediabriefing last week following the ANC’sthree-day national executive committee‘lekgotla’ held in Pretoria I would havekissed his grey beard with passion. My passion would have stemmed from

the fact that Mantashe and the ruling partyare slowly but surely realising that thingshave gone too far and that there needs tobe definitive change. The ANC wants go-vernment (of which they are a majority) to

remove unqualified and overpaid ‘fat-cats’from top municipal jobs. This call comesahead of the 2016 local government electionsand this has been long overdue.Mantashe saidthat the ANC wanted to strengthen accounta-bility and political management, somethingthat they should have done centuries ago.As he rightfully says, you cannot have a

History teacher appointed in the municipalityas a Chief Financial Officer. That does notmake sense does it? A good friend of minewould add to Mantashe’s statement and say,

“a stupid person cannot be given a pill thatmakes him/her wise overnight.” (Ha hona pi-disi e tla etsa setlatla se be bohlale). It ispleasing to notice that government will be cal-led upon to conduct a skills audit and removethose people who occupy positions they donot qualify for and that they have been appo-inted to merely because of affilliation. It is al-so pleasing to note that the ANC has promisedto publicly and decisively deal with poor per-formance and corruption, this should have do-ne a long time ago or we would not be in the

current situation where we still have peoplethat are using bucket system-toilets, peoplewho still have to walk kilometres to fetchwater, people who are still marginalisedand, finally, we would not have such highunemployment. Mantashe and his commit-tee have also called on the government toreview non-viable municipalities. As for-mer members of popular Kwaito groupBoom Shaka would sing, It’s about time!I concur.Lerato...

Notes from the TOUCHLINE have it thatcoaching is something that is lacking in ourfootball, to say the least.

However, TOUCHLINE is not faultingdevelopment coaches because I don’t re-member when last there has been a COA-CHING Course here in Sedibeng.

TOUCHLINE thinks there is a seriousneed for coaching courses in this region - asmuch if not more than the secret meetingsheld in this region by football administrators. How can one expect youngsters to grow asfootballers when they are coached by someo-ne who relies only on his experience.

Foundation and development is very cru-cial in football to lay a solid foundation. The

excuse that we lack experience ,or are stillbuilding, every time we fail, is caused by noless than a lack of quality coaching from juni-or to club level.

The failure of the national team has muchto do with the development of football in thiscountry in general. It is also embarrassing tosee professional players who lack simplefootball basics but play for our national team‘nogal’.

Recently I stopped to go and watch SABLeague teams because those players lacksimple football basics - at their age. This iscaused by the poor coaching they were expo-sed to at a young age. It is too late to fixthis because some of them are too old.

It is not about where you trained but howyou trained. As one of the best coaches inthe world would say:

“You play at the rhythm you train at. Ifyou train badly, you play badly. If you worklike a beast in training, you play the same

way.” This can only be Pep Guardiola, thecoach I admire so much since his day at Spa-nish giants Barcelona.

In fact it doesn’t matter where you trainbut if your training is not up to standard, yourplayers won’t grow. This is the biggest chal-lenge in football – “poor training”!

The biggest challenge in football is thateveryone wants to own a team even if he orshe can’t afford the necessary football mate-rials for the betterment of players.

It doesn’t necessary mean that every deve-lopment coach must own a soccer team. Whycan’t they join forces with other coaches whohave since progressed rather than having toomany development teams in one small area?

Why can’t we bring those resources toge-ther and work as a unit?

But TOUCHLINE is aware that somemight say: ‘I won’t work with so-and-so be-cause our PHILOSOPHY is not the same’.Point taken, but are all development coaches

understanding, or do they know what is me-ant by PHILOSOPHY? TOUCHLINEdoubts it!

Whatever happened with Bafana Bafanain the AFCON can be attributed to manythings including the developmental stage ofplayers.

“From all corners of SA we must unite andput differences aside for the benefit of ourtalent and our national games!

No coach at any level should be allowedto coach without being a member of SAFCAand endorse all SAFCA policies and initiati-ves,” said Coach Omar Davids.

This above statement makes lot of senseto TOUCHLINE but I don’t know how itgoes down with others, especially those menand women who are involved with this beau-tiful game – football.

“Forward We Go, No More TurningBack”. Time for cheap talk is over. Takingnotes from TOUCHLINE………
