Special Notice to current

6th and 7th Grade Parents

Bristow Middle School Enrollment

Bristow Middle School expects to have a limited number of openings for students entering

grades 7 and 8 in the 2017-2018 school year. Bristow Middle School is a school of choice,

drawing its diverse population from all neighborhoods in West Hartford. In the 2017-2018

school year Bristow will have an enrollment of approximately 420 students.

Students who attend King Philip, Sedgwick Middle, or non-public schools who would like to

be part of our enrollment for 7th and 8th grade, must apply for inclusion in the process by

March 21, 2017. In order to help parents make an informed choice, two

informational meetings will be held at Bristow Middle School on Monday, March 6, 2017

and Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 6:30 pm. Parents can choose to attend either of these

meetings. Students are invited to attend these meetings with their parents.

The application form as well as more details about the process for all grades is on our

website at http://bristow.whps.org/

If you would like more information about Bristow and its programs, please email or call the

Principal, Steven Cook, at [email protected], or 231-2100.

overall in the Hartford Regional Math Competition. Great job! Grace B. won First

Place in the overall division of the Regional Math

Competition, followed by Holly D. who was Third overall in the

competition. Many students put extra effort into answering 1000 math

questions in the 5 day Regional Math Competition. Nyla H. Placed 9th in the

regional math completion. Congratulations on an amazing math work effort!

Students visit from Changchun

Students from Changchun, capital of Ji Lin--a northern Chinese

province, visited West Hartford and were hosted by families from both high

schools and all three middle schools. During the visit, students had the op-

portunity to shadow their hosting students and attend

classes with them. It was a wonderful experience for both visiting and

hosting students and their families, thanks to the cultural exchange and the

activities organized by both families and schools. As always, West Hartford

residents proved to be gracious and warm hosts.

Thank you!

News from the Nurses - March 2017

We need your help!! We have noticed an increase in students coming to the health room not feeling well because they haven’t eaten breakfast. Time in the health room means time away from classes. We educate students on the importance of eating a well-balanced meal in the morning and remind them that there is breakfast in the school cafeteria every morning, starting at 7:30am. In case you didn’t know: All students can get breakfast in the cafeteria. If your student gets a free or reduced lunch, breakfast is free. Please do your best to make sure your children are eating before school so they can do their best throughout the day! Reminder to all Parents/Guardians:

We are seeing a number of students with general cold-like symptoms. It is often easier for students to get through their school day if they are medicated with over-the-counter cold/cough medication prior to school. Remember, the health room is NOT ALLOWED to give any medication to students without a doctor’s order, including over-the-counter medications. If a student needs to take any medication during school hours, please provide the Sedgwick nurses’ office with the medication and a copy of the Medication Authorization Form, which needs to be signed by a parent/guardian AND physician. Reminder to 6th grade parents/guardians: All 6th grade students must have a physical exam performed after July 1, 2015 and up to date vaccinations in order to enter 7th grade. The State of CT required vaccinations for 7th grade are:

Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap vaccine)

Meningitis (Menactra Vaccine)

Chicken Pox (Varicella vaccine #2)

If you are unsure if your child has already met these requirements, please contact the health room and we can let you know. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have concerns regarding your child’s health.

Technology and Engineering

Students in Ms. Nagler’s 7th grade Technology and Engineering class have been using

their critical thinking skills to design and code Makeblock robots. The students

enthusiastically accepted the challenge of developing an obstacle course for their robots

to navigate. The robots were purchased this year thanks to the grant that my class

received from the Foundation for WHPS!
