INTRODUCTION
Before going into the laboratory designs and organizations, it is necessary for you to know about the historical background of the laboratory.
This will give you a birds eye view of the growth/metamorphorsis of the school science laboratory.

Historical Background
Before the advent of the 18th century, laboratories were not associated with science teaching. Science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics have become school subjects even before the instrument designed specifically for scientific purpose came up.

With regards to laboratories and equipments, Aliyu (1982) stated that most of the scientific equipment before 1600 were borrowed from practical crafts and craftsmen. They had much better tools than the scientist of that period Laboratory work became a permanent feature in science teaching at the high school in the nineteen century. This was when the first student laboratory was built in Britain at the Royal Technical College by Thomas Graham in 1830.

Historical Background III
Earlier, some eminent pioneer scientists such as Lavoisier (1743-1794) Pricsley (1776-1848) converted their homes into laboratories. In these laboratories, they held regular demonstrations for youngsters who were interested in learning science (Lock 1988). So you can see that long ago, the laboratory has been and continue to be an integral part of science learning and teaching activities.

Summary In this lecture session, you learnt that the first school science laboratory was built in Britain in 1830. Prior to this, scientist even had to borrow tools and equipments from craftsmen to enable them carry out some activities Formerly, homes of scientists were used for regular demonstrationsand served as laboratories.
