‘Rosa gallica officinalis’ is of great antiquity. In the Middle Ages its scent-retaining properties were much valued by apothecaries - hence it is also known as ‘The Apothecary’s Rose’.
The Gallica group of roses were one of the first species roses to be cultivated by the Greeks and Romans. Other roses in this group include ‘Cardinal de Richelieu’, ‘Complicata’, ‘Empress Josephine’ and ‘Rosa Mundi’ to name but a few.

‘Sophie’s Perpetual’ is a beautiful old China rose which was rediscovered in an old garden by the rose lover and art historian Humphrey Brooke.
An internationally acknowledged rose expert Humphrey lovingly restored a bestowed garden back to its former glory. Painstakingly collecting roses from far and wide. The beautiful gardens were opened to the public and became known as the first Rosarium in the UK.
China roses first appeared in the mid-18th century, their long flowering season encouraged breeders to raise many varieties throughout the 19th century.

‘Gloire de Ducher’, ‘Hugh Dickson’ and ‘Souvenir d’Alphonse Lavallée’ on this page, are from the rose group of ‘Hybrid Perpetuals’, which emerged in the mid-19th century and evolved to become the most popular race of rose in the Victorian times. They vary from high-centred, very double flowers to blowsy blooms with varying degrees of perfume. Their growth habits are also variable from short, compact plants to vigorous shrubs, most will repeat flower.
Other roses that you may like to consider within this family are ‘Alfred Colomb’, ‘Countess of Oxford’, ‘Eclair’ and ‘Souvenir du Docteur Jamain’, to name but a few.
