Last Meeting: Once again, we were honored to have Ricky Morgan, ASNT’s National Liaison., as the first guest speaker of the year. The subject was Phased Array UT Testing. We were surprised to learn that this method of UT testing has been around for quite a while, but what’s differ- ent now is that it has become totally portable and its widespread use is growing rapidly. This method of UT is able to automatic ally move its focus through out the entire profile of the weld with no manipulation of the probe other than a linear movement along the length of the weld. The equipment has a built-in processor and memory where the software is loaded on to. It stores everything in its memory, making it easy to make reports and load them on to portable memory storage devices. In this sense, this piece of equipment is truly revolutionary. Ricky’s power point presentation was very informative. He had the equipment on a display table and showed us how it is used and how to read the screen. This method of UT picks up and identifies everything inside the weld. This is not good news for us welders! Haha. Well, seriousl y, it’s going to make a bet- ter welder out of most. Thanks Ricky!!!! We really appreciate it. Thanks to Smith Emery who is so supportive of you doing this, and to ASNT for working as such good partners with AWS. Section Scholarships Awards Our Congratulations goes out to Mike Bassig and Kyle Maschner who were the Award Recipients for the Fall 2008 Section Scholarshi p. I was thrilled to present Mike his Award during the meeting. Many thanks to Rick Maschner ( Kyle’s dad) for accepting the Award on Kyle’s behalf. The Awards this Fall were given in the form of Cash Vouchers to be spent at Complete Welding and Cutting Supplies. Much appreciation goes out to Complete Welding and Cutting Supplies, who donated a portion of the Gift Certificates that were awarded to our student members. We hope to get many more applicants for the Spring 2009 Awards.

Students...Wake Up! It’s Time to Apply for Scholarships !!Come on all you student members! E-mail us your applications to [email protected] or download itfrom our website : http://sections.aws.org/los_angeles/scholarships.htmlDeadline: December 31st, 2009 Let’s have plenty of participation!!!

Section Announcements:

Section’s Executive Committee Board of Directors:I’m very happy to announce that we have added a members to our Section’s Executive Committee Board of Directors. Let’s all give Tony Barraza a

warm welcome as our Program Committee 1st Vice Chairman. He will be working together with our Program Committee Chairman, Ashwin Raghavan, aswell as with all other board members.

Tony has been involved in weld inspection for 10 years, and became a CWI in 2001. Before that he worked as a Certified Pipe Welder. He has an As-sociates Degree in the Occupational Studies of Welding Technology. He now works for J. V. Industrial Companies, Ltd as the Western Division QualityControl Manager. This firm is the largest Specialty Welding Turnaround and Shut Down company in the United States with offices all over the country. AsQC Manager he maintains LVI’s commitment to quality and World Class performance. He supervises 40+ welding inspectors in his division, which coversCalifornia, Alaska, Washington, and Hawaii, covering everything from Pre-fabrication in their facilities, to maintenance shut downs in oil refineries at theirclients’ facilities.

One of the many great things about having Tony “on board” is the fact that he lives in Torrance. Because of this, now we will have someone helpingus put together meetings in the Los Angeles area as well. Until now, most of our board members have been from the Inland Empire area. Our Section is thelargest AWS Section, covering a huge geographical area (from San Pedro to the Coachella Valley, from the high dessert to the San Diego County Line) andtherefore we need representation from members throughout.

One of the things I set out to do when I became Chairman in June 2007, was for us to have involvement from members throughout ourentire area. We have a long ways to go before we entirely achieve this goal, but this is a big step. No one should be left out. This is why weneed your help...any more volunteers? Please step forward. We have positions available.

On behalf of our Section, I thank Tony and welcome him aboard. Let’s all give him a big hand! I personally thank all the board mem-bers for their support.

George T Rolla, Chairman
