The combination of white sails, saltwater, fresh breezes and youthful enthusiasm combine to make for a good time on most weekends just off the Port of Redwood City.

As it has since its formation in 2000, the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation teaches kids to sail. The boats are dinghies: the 7-foot, single-sail Optimist for young kids, and for older kids, the 13-foot Flying Junior, a pure racing craft with main and jib sails and rigging for a spinnaker — the spectacular but high-maintenance balloon-like sail used for running downwind. Patrick Wilkinson of Woodside stands on the centerboard of the capsized sailboat and grabs the gunnel as part of an exercise to pull the craft upright.

“I am a very competitive person and I see sailing for me as a sport I will do for the rest of my life,” says Patrick Wilkinson, left, as he and shipmate Maddie Roman practiced maneuvers off the Port of Redwood City.

summer Olympic Games in London, where she placed fifth in Laser Radial team racing. “Sailing is a sport that anyone can pick up, no matter what age,” Ms. O’Bryan Vandemoer said in an email. “I love teach-ing all ages to sail. Being able to take a very abstract thing and see the light bulb go on for someone is awesome. It never gets old. My favorite type of kid to coach is one that is open minded to new things, adven-turous, and capable of laughing at themselves. Sailing is a life-time sport, so getting someone to love it is the goal.”

INFORMATION

Close quarters are a fact of life in competitive sailing, an objective for some of the young sailors sailing with the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation.

Lining up at the dock before setting off into the waters off the Port of Redwood City is a part of the discipline of sailing practice.

Sunshine, saltwater and a sailboat to enjoy them are all part of the scene at sailing class for Dorothy Aldridge, left, and Grace Tully, both students at Menlo-Atherton High School.

Part of the deal in messing about in boats is moving them from place to place on land.
