1 DON'T STOP THE MUSIC HOW MUSIC CAME TO CHALLIS Don't Stop The Music How Music Came to Challis is an exciting collaboration between primary school students, music educators, international stars and Perth’s most exciting tertiary ensembles. Classic FM's Russell Torrance helps chart the journey of students of Challis Community Primary School who are part of a new school music program. With their imaginations ignited they show us what they haved learnt, supported by a collective of exceptional performers. Ten months ago Challis Community Primary School in Armadale had virtually no musical resources. Now, thanks to passionate teachers, music tutors, choir and music mentor Micheál McCarthy, and community support, it has a rapidly developing music culture with a flourishing choir and over 80 students learning brass and string instruments. The Concert celebrates the achievements of the students whose talents are showcased with the support of WAAPA's Jazz Ensemble, the ethereal sounds of Eneksis Vocal Ensemble, the award winning Defying Gravity, the virtuosic sounds of the UWA Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, Eastwinds a multicultural experience presented by Musica Viva Australia, the Classic Sounds folk group, and the Salvation Army's renowned Perth Fortress Band. The children will be supported by mentor James Morrison. The Concert is the first event in a national campaign to shine a light on music education in Australia, supported by awardwinning educator and researcher in music education and cognitive development, Dr Anita Collins. It is a wonderful opportunity to bring together music educators and influencers ahead of the launch of the Campaign when the television series airs in November 2018. The Campaign will encourage Australians to donate unused musical instruments to children in need and empower passionate educators to start music programs in their own schools. Extracts from the Concert will feature in the television documentary to be screened on the ABC which follows the teachers, the children and their families to show the powerful impact that music has on all aspects of their lives.
