frequency. The electromagnetic wave produced by the loop 5 is progressive, which, by the Dop- pler effect, increases the width of the absorption line of the cell. This increase makes it possible to reduce the control time constant and con- sequently makes it possible to have a compact frequency standard, with a rapid control action, which can operate in an unfavorable environ- ment.

SECONDARY-ELECTRON DETECTOR FOR ANALYZING IRRADIATED SAMPLES FOR
SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPES AND
MICROPROBES
Giancarlo Giacchetti, Jurgen Ransch, Clive T Walker, Karlsruhe, Federal Republic Of Ger- many assigned to European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom)
A secondary-electron detector for the analysis of irradiated samples in scanning electron micro- scopes and microprobes, including an electron collector 12 arranged along a curved or angular path, an electron accelerator 13, a scintillator 24, a light guide 27 and a photomultiplier 28. To enable more effective investigation of irradiated nuclear fuels and to improve the magnification power, a spectrometer 20 and a Wehnelt cylinder 25 are provided between the accelerator and the scintillator.

AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLABLE LOADING
APPARATUS FOR MASS SPECTROMETERS OR THE LIKE
Curt Brunnee, Lothar Delgmann, Gunte Mar- ten, Bremen, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Finnigan Mat GmbH
Automatically controllable loading apparatus for a mass spectrometer or like equipment com- prises a rotatable disc for holding a plurality of sample carriers for successive movement into a transfer position. A push rod transfers successive sample carriers from the transfer position to a loading position. Guide means guide the push rod during its transfer movement. The guide means include a shut-off valve adjacent the loading position. Sealing means define in a fixed position between the valve and the transfer posi- tion at least one vacuum chamber adapted to be exhausted for the purpose of equalizing the pres- sure at opposite sides of said valve.
