The School Games is one of the flagship legacy programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sits at the core of the Governments investment in school sport. Financial support is being received from the Department of Media, Culture and Sport, the Department of Health, the Department for Education and Sport England Lottery Funding. The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national finals event:

• Level 1 - sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition • Level 2 - individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions • Level 3 – the county/area will stage multi-sport School Games festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition • Level 4 – the Sainsbury's School Games finals: a national multi-sport event where the most talented young people in the UK will be selected to compete in our sporting venues

Size of Team/Squad Each team should include:

A minimum of 5 boys, with a maximum of 8 boys and

A minimum of 5 girls, with a maximum of 8 girls

Basic Overview Event Format The Aviva Sportshall Secondary Programme offers an ideal format for competition in which young people may develop their skills ahead of the track and field season. Team Information School teams should consist of a minimum of 5 boys and 5 girls, with a maximum of 8 boys and 8 girls being permitted. They may compete in a maximum of three track and two field events, drawn from the following: On the track 2 Lap Individual Race, 4 Lap Individual Race and 8 Lap Paarlauf, each requiring 2 athletes. 6 Lap Individual Race, requiring 1 athlete. Obstacle Relay, 4 x 2 Lap Relay each requiring four athletes. … and in the field Shot, Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump, Vertical Jump each requiring 2 athletes. Additional Information Team Managers are encouraged to find the running order and select their team accordingly. It is inappropriate for an athlete to contest both the 2 and 4 lap Individual Races or the 6 lap and 8 lap Paarlauf events since they follow immediately. There are fewer problems associated in contesting field events in the same group and additional time will be permitted for athletes covering two events in the field. Please note that athletes will not be permitted to compete in bare feet or unsuitable footwear. The Aviva Sportshall handbook incorporates details of all the events, including a full explanation of each event together with some teaching points. Visit www.sportshall.org for further details along with event and competition rules downloads.

Pathway The Lady Taverners Regional Final will take place in April 2014

Size of Team/Squad A squad may consist of 10 players, with 8 selected for each match

Basic Overview Event Format This indoor format follows the girls programme at Year 5/6. The top 4 progress to final at the Gateway Centre. The winning team progress to the Regional final. A squad may consist of 10 players, with 8 selected for each match. Normal cricket rules apply except: The last batter may continue batting, changing end to receive strike. Size of Team/Squad A minimum of 6 in a team.

Basic Overview Event Format Each team has a minimum of 6 players including wicketkeeper who does not bowl. Waiting batters act as scorers and umpires. Each team has one innings. An innings is closed after an agreed number of overs or all batters are out. Normal cricket rules apply except: Batters change ends at the end of each over. Batters may be caught out off the ceiling and walls indoors (except the boundary wall) providing the ball has not touched the floor. LBW if a batter deliberately blocks the ball to prevent it hitting the wicket. Last remaining batter may continue, changing ends as necessary to receive strike. Except for the wicketkeeper, no fielder is allowed to stand within 10 yards of the striking batter until the ball is played. Bowl from one end only. Over arm bowling. Only six balls to be bowled in any over. If preferred, two bowlers may bowl in tandem, bowling alternately to complete either a six-ball over or two six-ball overs. The inactive bowler may not field. No bowler may bowl more than four overs per session. The ball which follows a no-ball or wide is a free hit. Add two runs to the team score for each no-ball or wide bowled by the opposing team (any completed runs, zone scores or boundaries are also added to the team score). If the 'free hit' is also a wide or no-ball that ball is pronounced `dead' and six runs are added to the team score. Basic Overview Event Format Futsal is a 5-aside game, normally played on a slightly larger pitch with hockey sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce. It is played to touchlines and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head height. As a small sided game players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces. As a game it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness. An invite will be sent to all Derbyshire secondary schools early in the autumn term with details about the 4 area qualifying competitions. Entry will be by first come first served. There is no regional or national competition

Size of Team/Squad Teams of 6 pupils playing 6 holes in 60 minutes

Basic Overview Event Format Super Sixes is an exciting format of golf competition for beginner to intermediate players. It has been developed to incorporate all the exciting, fun and team elements of golf in a schools competition format. A traditional golf course is not required: schools can use the equipment found in the Golf Xtreme bags to design their own 6-hole courses on a school site. Each team consists of 6 players (3 pairs), ideally with an adult or leader to supervise and guide the players on the early holes. Each pair can be ranked or simply named A, B and C. 6 holes are laid out. It’s “Match-Play” so you are competing against another team where a win on a hole is worth 2 points, a draw on a hole is worth 1 point, and a loss on a hole is worth 0 points. All points scored in a match count towards the overall team score for the 6 players so every hole provides an opportunity to score even if the first few holes have been lost. Additional Information For SSP qualifying rounds, it is recommended that the lighter ‘Almost Golf Balls’ are used, found in the Golf Xtreme bags. Further details can be found by visiting www.golf-foundation.org with many useful documents and resources to download at www.golf-foundation.org/downloads.asp?section=395&sectionTitle=Document%20Library.

Basic Overview Event Format A squad should consist of a maximum of 15 players. A team should consist of nine players and up to six substitutes (A squad of 12 is recommended). You can have a minimum of 1 boy and a maximum of 5 boys on the pitch at one time. Teams can bat for one or two innings each, alternatively a limited number of balls e.g. 20 good balls or until all batters are out. One team bats while the other team fields and bowls. The bowler bowls the ball underarm to the batter who hits the ball anywhere on the rounders pitch. If the batter hits the ball backwards then they must wait at first post until the ball returns to the forward area. If the batter reaches the second or third post in one hit, the batting team scores half a rounder. If the batter reaches fourth post in one hit, the batting team scores a rounder. A batter can wait at first, second or third post when it is not safe to run. A batter is out if the fielding team catch the ball hit by the batter before it touches the ground or by touching the post the batter is heading to with the ball before the batter reaches it.
