The Feast of the “Chair” Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle – February 22

“The chair of a bishop, called the cathedra, is the symbol of his foundational ministry to be a teacher of faith to his church community. What then can we learn from Peter, the rock of our Church? His extraordinary confession of faith teaches us courage to confess truth, even if it may sound far-fetched by everyday standards. Peter listened to the Spirit of God in his heart and proclaimed Jesus as Christ, Son of the Living God. When Jesus asks, ‘Who do you say that I am?’ each of us is presented with the same question.”

FEBRUARY 21, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent

“And behold, two men were conversing with [Jesus], Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.”

TODAY! Special Liturgy for the Sick

This afternoon, there will be a special Liturgy of the Anointing of the Sick at Notre Dame Church, on West 114th Street at Morningside Avenue, for all who are unwell in body, mind or spirit. IT IS NOT A MASS! Our local Cluster of Churches is sponsoring this event, which will include: (1) 2:00 PM Confessions, (2) 2:30 PM Liturgy (Prayers, Scripture and Anointing) (3) a small reception. Monsignor Sandi will be in attendance. Each family should also arrange their own transportation. Please note: due to last week’s inclement weather, this event was canceled last Sunday and rescheduled for today.

* * * * * * * * Enhancing Our Lent

During Lent we seek to prepare ourselves for the Church’s greatest celebration: the Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eucharistic Adoration, offered at Holy Trinity the final

Saturday of each month following the 5:30 Mass, is a wonderful way to deepen ones spirituality. Spend an hour in quiet contemplation with Our Lord.

Corpus Christ Church, home to Thomas Merton and Music Before 1800, offers Lenten Vespers, Sunday at 4:00 PM, with guest speakers and musicians: 212-666-9350 or www.corpus-christi-nyc.org.

“Spiritual Exercises”

The 2016 Holy Trinity Lenten Mission will be preached by Jesuit Father Patrick Ryan, our Sunday associate priest. He is the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English Language and Literature at Fordham, and a PhD in comparative history of religion from Harvard University (with a specialization in Arabic and Islamic Studies). For about half of his life he worked in West Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Ghana. He has had faculty and administrative appointments at the University of Ghana, and Hekima College in Kenya, and the Gregorian University in Rome. He served as the first President of Loyola Jesuit College, a secondary school in Abuja, Nigeria. Each night, Sunday through Wednesday, March 13th-16th, Father Ryan will help us think about, and use, “spiritual exercises.” Sounds interesting? Plan on coming to one or all four nights! * * * * * * * *

USE MORE OF YOUR MIND AT MASS ADAPTED FROM FR. JAMES WELDON

Appreciate What’s Going on Around You as You Pray The Lord’s Prayer!

Along with everyone you can see, there is a giant “cloud of witnesses” (the saints) around you, including your loved ones who have passed away. As well, imagine the parish in the next town, city, state, country – in fact the whole Church. They are gathered with you right then and there – spiritually, yes – but truly. * * * * * * * *

Pastor Away As he did last year, Monsignor will be away, this Wednesday evening through Sunday, attending the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress at the Anaheim Convention Center, the largest of its kind in the nation, hosting 20,000 educators. “Boundless Mercy” is this year’s theme. * * * * * * * * Reminder: that Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

We are thrilled! Later this week, we are treating Grandma Augusta and Grandpa Wilhelm (no relation to the old Kaiser) to a free trip to Disneyland, courtesy of the luggage of a certain pastor. [Shhh! Please keep this “stow-away” plan to yourselves.] A visit with “Mickey and Minnie” at Disneyland (20 minutes from the Anaheim Convention Center) promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime treat for “the old folks,” who remember the original Mouseketeers from the 1950s TV show. Grandpa still coos over “Annette” and Grandma over “Lonnie.” Ah, the old days!

* * * * * * * * A Reflection – “THEY FELL SILENT …” “The account of the Transfiguration of the Lord is proclaimed every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, giving us a glimpse into the glorious destiny that awaits the faithful followers of Christ. The custom of reading today’s Gospel near the beginning of Lent may come from an ancient tradition that held that the Transfiguration took place 40 days before Good Friday. Moses and Elijah, who appeared at the side of Jesus, also prepared for their life’s work with a 40-day fast and a 40-day sojourn. In Luke’s presentation of the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah converse with Jesus, concerning the exodus that he is about o accomplish in Jerusalem, and a voice from heaven declares Jesus to be God’s beloved Son. The cross, a symbol of sin, defect, suffering, and death, will be transformed into a symbol of holiness, victory, exaltation, and life, for by it the beloved Son leads us out of death into life.” – Sourcebook * * * * * * * *

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18 God told Abram that he would give him the land of Egypt and his descendants would become a great people. Abram then made sacrifices to God, cutting them in half. A torch passed between the pieces, as a visible sign to Abram of God's promise. Second Reading: Philippians 3:17—4:1 Paul urges the Philippians to avoid becoming too interested in material possessions. He reminds them that their most important wealth is their faith in Jesus, which will lead them to eternal life. Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36 Jesus took Peter, John and James to a mountain to pray. When his clothes grew incredibly white, Moses and Elijah appeared. They spoke of the scripture he was to fulfill. Then a cloud came down and a voice said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him." The disciples who had seen Jesus' glory did not disclose this experience to anyone until much later
