Second Sunday of Lent

(Readings: Genesis 15:5-18 — Philippians 3:17-4:1 -- Luke 9:28-36 ) God’s Free Gift — In the discussion of the value of faith and works, no text is more essential than Genesis

15:6: “Abram put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.” St. Paul commented on it at length in Romans 4. Psalm 143:2 pleads, “Do not enter into judgment with your servant; before you no one can be just.” Abram’s faith, therefore, is not a proof of his righteousness before God; but the Lord

“credited” it to him, as if to say, “It’s not perfect, but it will do.” This is important to remember when we re-flect on La Salette. The conversion Mary seeks is not only to respect the Lord’s name and the Lord’s day, to

observe Lent, and to pray faithfully. The importance of these attitudes and activities lies in their meaning, which comes from the faith that accompanies them. James 2:26, however, makes the point that faith without works is dead. In other words, real faith requires concrete expression in the manner of our life. Neither faith nor works have the power to qualify us as righteous. That is God’s free gift, to Abram and to us. It is by his

mercy that he chooses to consider our faith strong and our works great. We often long for what is beyond our grasp. “Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” writes St.

Paul. He speaks of our status as not yet fully achieved, with the expectation that Jesus will bring about its ful-fillment. Jesus chose just three of his Apostles to witness his transfiguration on the mountain. That also was a free gift they didn’t deserve. Peter was right to say, “Master, it is good for us to be here.” He understood the privileged nature of the event. Many La Salette pilgrims share this feeling. Even the mountain itself hints at the spiritual heights to which the Beautiful Lady wishes to raise us. After Mary disappeared on that Septem-ber 19, 1846, Mélanie said she thought the Lady must have been a great saint. Maximin answered, “If I had

known that, I would have asked her to take me with her.” Indeed, with her help we can dare to pray the words of today’s Psalm: “I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living.”

Annual Parish Golf Tournament Blessed Trinity Catholic Church is sponsoring its 26th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at Stoneybrook East Golf Club. The tournament will begin at 8:00am. We encourage all golfers ( Men & Women) no matter what your handicap to come out and play . This is a scramble format (4 person teams) so everyone gets a chance to hit the ball from the best location. Yes, we do sell mulligans to give you that extra shot if you need it. The cost to play is $80.00 which includes all fees, plus range balls, and lunch. You will also be eligible for many great prizes just for participating. Come out and join the fun!

If you want to help we are looking for hole sponsors. We have Platinum , Gold, Silver and Bronze Sponsor packages available. Please let us know if you know of a business or individual who would like to be a sponsor or someone who wants to donate a prize for our silent auction. All proceeds from this tournament will be used to support charitable projects sponsored by the parish.

Twice a year, Blessed Trinity’s Council of Catholic Women sends out “Cookie for the Troops” Care Packages. Last November we sent 137 boxes of cookies and other comforts of home to our troops

serving in combat. We NEED your help again! Please donate items to send to our troops:

These small ubiquitous items we civilians take for granted can have an uplifting impact on the lives of our service men and woman serving so far away from home. If you know a soldier in a combat zone and

would like them to receive one of our care packs, please give their name and address to Pat Matteson 407-733-3069 or the Parish Office. For more info please call Pat Matteson.

again praying that generous parishioners will donate new school shoes. Traveling some‐mes 90 minutes each way thru dusty rocky

mountain paths destroys shoes quickly. These children aged 4 thru 17 thank God for your con nued generosity which does give them

Reflexión…. El Don Gratuito de Dios

Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma

Génesis 15:5‐18; Filipenses 3:17‐4:1; Lucas 9:28‐36

En la discusión sobre el valor de la fe y las obras, ningún texto es más esencial que

Génesis 15:6, “Abrám creyó en el Señor, y el Señor se lo tuvo en cuenta para su

jus ficación”. San Pablo comenta este texto en su amplitud en Romanos 4.

El Salmo 143:2 clama, “No llames a juicio a tu servidor, porque ningún ser viviente

es justo en tu presencia”. Por lo tanto, la fe de Abrám, no es prueba de su jus cia ante Dios; pero el Señor se

la “acreditó”, como diciendo, “no es perfecta, pero servirá.”

Es importante recordar esto cuando reflexionamos sobre La Sale e. La conversión que María busca no se

trata solamente de respetar el nombre del Señor y el día del Señor, guardar la Cuaresma, y rezar fielmente.

La importancia de estas ac tudes y ac vidades está en su significado que viene de la fe que las acompaña.

Sin embargo, San ago 2:26, resalta que la fe sin obras está muerta. En otras palabras, la fe requiere de ex‐

presiones concretas en nuestra manera de vivir.

Ni la fe ni las obras enen el poder de darnos la calificación de justos. Eso es un don gratuito de Dios tanto

para Abram como para nosotros. Es por su misericordia que el elige considerar nuestra fe fuerte y nuestras

obras grandes.

A menudo estamos anhelando lo que está más allá de nuestro alcance. “Nosotros somos ciudadanos del cie‐

lo, y esperamos ardientemente que venga de allí como Salvador el Señor Jesucristo”. Escribe San Pablo. El

habla de nuestro estado como no habiendo alcanzado aún su completa realización, con la expecta va de

que Jesús lo llevara a su pleno cumplimiento.

Jesús eligió sólo tres de sus Apóstoles para ser tes gos de su transfiguración en la montaña. Aquello fue

también un don gratuito inmerecido por parte de ellos. Pedro tenía razón al decir, “Maestro, ¡qué bien esta‐

mos aquí!” El entendió la naturaleza privilegiada del acontecimiento.

Muchos peregrinos de La Sale e comparten este sen miento. Hasta la misma naturaleza insinúa las alturas

espirituales a las cuales la Bella Señora nos quiere hacer llegar.

Después que María desapareció aquel 19 de sep embre de 1846, Melania dijo haber pensado que la Señora

pudo haber sido una gran santa. Maximino respondió, “Si lo hubiésemos sabido, le hubiéramos pedido lle‐

varnos con ella.” En efecto, con su ayuda podemos atrevernos a rezar con las palabras del Salmo de hoy: “Yo

creo que contemplaré la bondad del Señor en la erra de los vivientes”.
