March 2015 The Lampstand
Brothers and Sisters,
We have begun our Lenten journey, and it is a journey that can be a bit of wonder. When we enter Lent, we are quickly reminded of our sinfulness, and for many this is very uncomfortable. However, when we are reminded and recall our sins, we also receive God’s grace and mercy. Lent is that time of reflection — and for the most part quietness — but it is also a time when we can see what are those areas we need to be growing or have grown through the years.
Being a native of Arizona, I was always amazed to see how things can grow in the midst of the desert. I would see cacti, bushes, lizards, and many other creatures growing and living in a place where there seemed to be no life; but life was all around us.
As we journey with Jesus through these forty days, maybe one of the things we should be looking for are is: Where is there life when we are surrounded by those things that do not bring us life but rather show us the desert?
I pray that this Lent may be one where we can find those places of life in the midst of the desert and bring us to a blessed Holy Week that will then bring us to the resurrection.
Peace in Christ,
The Rev. Jason B. LucasYour Priest in Charge

Help us plan our new patio
The St. Edwards Patio Planners (or STEPP) needs a couple more members to help decide how to proceed with all the bricks we moved to St. Ed-wards last fall. Anyone who has built or contracted a patio, anything like it, or just really cares about how it will look is welcome to join. This will be an asset St. Edwards will be able to use for years and years for picnics to parties to weddings. Your input is needed! Our hope is to not have more than a handful of meetings to get the project started. Please contact Fritz Wright 612-867-4228.
Rector committee now formingOur wonderful Priest-in-Charge, Jason, has been with us over half a year already! It is time to gather a committee to discern and plan a process for installing him as our rector. If you are inter-ested in being a part of this process please contact Rachel Svihel at [email protected] or 612-210-2772.
Join the choir for Easter!
During the season of Lent, the choir will meet after services for 30 minutes or so to rehearse music for the Easter service. Repertoire is "Glory of the Lord" and "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah. Even if you can't be at all the rehearsals, you are welcome to join us! If you have questions, see Tami after services.
f. Clerk of the Vestry: Fritz made a motion to elect Amy Lounsbury as the clerk of the Vestry. Fran seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. g. Vestry Retreat: Rev. Jason will follow-up with the Vestry. He is considering dates in late February or early March. h. Discussing of Vestry Meetings in 2015: All Vestry meetings will be held on the third Sunday of the month. The next Vestry meeting will be 15 Feb 2015.

The Plant Sale is coming — and so is Spring! The Plant Sale is the big fundraiser that St. Edward’s has been doing for the past 38 years. Profits always are between $8,000 - $11,000! With that in mind, it is indeed time to start planning for this wonderful activity. The truth is not only do we make some money we also have a good time!
Here is a casual schedule of what happens during this event:
• Week of March 15 - 22: About 1200 brochures are sent out to former customers, friends, etc.
• April 18: the Tent and Greenhouse are put up• April 19: Pre-orders must be returned to St. Edward’s • April 26: Final order is sent into our main supplier, Broman’s Nursery in Corcoran• April 28: Work morning at church to make signs, labels for plants, leaflet the neighborhood, etc.• May 3: Furniture is moved from the church to the tents – this includes tables, chairs, etc.• May 5: Plants are delivered after 1:00• May 6: Week I of Sale opens for pre-order folks at noon• May 7 - 10: Sale is open from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm• May 14, 15 & 16: Week II of sale happens if needed• May 16: Clean-up
As the time gets nearer there will be sign-up sheets asking folk to give generously of their time. We are looking forward to a great sale!

March 2015 The Lampstand
Lent is about to begin. That word in English comes from an Old English word that means “to lengthen,” and it’s a reminder of the days getting longer as we move toward summer out of the dark of winter.
But in a number of other languages, particularly Spanish and French, the word for “Lent” reflects “forty days – cuaresma. Forty days of wandering in the desert, forty days of Jesus out in the desert.
It’s also about a journey. And it’s a journey that is about enlighten-ment if we’re willing to think about it that way.
Lent is an ancient tradition of solidarity and preparation for those who look forward to Baptism at the Easter Vigil. It has always been a time for prayer and study, fasting, self-denial, and alms-giving, sharing what we have with those who do not have. Prayer is an opportunity to reflect on who walks with us in the desert, who brings light into the world. Study is an opportunity to do the same kinds of things looking at the history of our tradition, where have human beings found light and direction in their journey through this world. Fasting and self-denial are an inward-reflection on what it is that keeps us in the dark, or what it is that keeps us directionless, or that keeps us overly self-focused. And it becomes an invitation to turn outward and share what we have with those who have not. To build solidarity among God’s people and the rest of the earth.
One of the most memorable Ash Wednesdays I ever spent was in San José, Costa Rica, in a school for children. I was asked to place ashes on the foreheads of toddlers. It was a provocative experience in the deepest sense, reminding very small children that they are mortal.
That cross that comes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the cross that’s put there at Baptism. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever. The cross that comes at Ash Wednesday is a reminder that you are dust and to dust we shall return, that we share that dust with every other human being who has ever walked this planet, that we share that dust with the stars and the planets, that we share that dust with all that has been created. We are made for relation-ship with creator and creation.
Lent and cuaresma is a journey to walk toward that light. May it be a blessed one this year.
