Mixed-Use Residential, ALThesis year, professor GarmazFall 2011

This is an ongoing thesis project. The design inten-tion is to bring more people into the Montgomery downtown area by creating mixed-use residential building that contains the qualities of suburban neighborhoods. By creating the courtyard on the second floor of the building, it became more secured playground where residents’ kids can play around. I focused on the form of the building that could have plenty of light and airflow through the courtyards and each unit.

Chicago children Hospital, IL4th year, professor BurlesonFall 2010

Children’s hospital should be designed with qualities of non-threatening playfulness, softness and safety. Urban buildings must fit into the context and the environment of the surroundings.

DESIGN: I started by designing a rectangular form with a facade that fits in with the surrounding buildings to keep up Chicago’s urban formality of the streets. The upper portion of the hospital evokes a childlike quality with round forms of colored glazing. The ground floor has efficient traffic thru the edge of the building, and the main entrances direct people to the formal ground lobby which redirects people to the intensive care units or the Sky Lobby. The patient floor also includes clear public circulation with a circular form of the plan including clear unit separation. Each unit has 7 private patient rooms, a nurse station and two family rooms. Each patient room and family room has a view of the city, and every floor has a balcony where people can enjoy the south sunlight.

Columbus Courthouse, GA3rd year, professor BurlesonSpring 2010

Project:A courthouse should be evocative, symbolic, iconic and cultural. A courthouse should be friendly to the citizens, and it should be the “face” of the city.

Design solution: Columbus has several significant, historical, and industrial build-ings. The design solution of the courthouse is to bring together both the historical and artful sides of Columbus. The west and south facades of the courthouse has a typical brick material, just like the surrounding industrial buildings with large modern trans-lucent glass pieces which represent the restricted section of the courthouse. The east and north facades, which are across from the River Art Performing Center, has a curved skin wall that sym-bolizes the river, and it creates a friendly experience with a public square for the citizens to gather.

Natural History Museum in Montgomery, AL2nd year, professor Faustspring, 2009

The objective of this project was to design a new riverside educational center for Montgomery. The program of the project includes classrooms, a gallery, a small auditorium, offices, a bookstore and a restaurant. Visitors will be expect-ed to walk along the river walk to access the building. Ex-terior Spaces, including a garden must be accommodated.

Design - I continued the curvilinear motion of the river walk into the form of the museum. By putting rectilinear trusses outside of the structure, I was able to create the har-mony of the curvilinear and rectilinear forms.

Design Facade in Opelika, AL2nd Year Fall, professor TruittFall, 2008

The objective of the project was to design a façade with a 10 foot front portion of the bookstore which has a small residence inside. The original façade is located in downtown Opelika, Alabama. The new façade does not disturb its sur-rounding buildings or the street in the front. The concept of the new façade came from merely stacking books in a book-shelf and creating different expectations of the natural light brightening the interior. The entrances are distinguished between the public door and the private door. The form of the façade has a great sky connection and a balcony for the private residence.

This project was to design a hangar for a single plane. A small café, stor-age, bathrooms and offices are all un-der one roof. The curved roof creates a great sky connection.

The project was to design the interior of two rooms using perspective views from one room to another. One room is 15’ x 15’ x 15’, and the other is 15’ x 45’ x 15’. There are line, material and rendering drawings.
