Seal Selection Checklist
The Chesterton Mechanical Seal Guide is a referencesource to help users identify standard mechanical sealrecommendations. This comprehensive guide includesproduct overviews, technical data, seal recommendations
by fluid, environmental control plans and a technicalreference section.
Section 1, Product Overviews, covers the key featuresof our core product line of mechanical seals andseal support systems and includes cut-away andcross-sectional views of each.
Section 2, Mechanical Seal Technical Data, includes seal and installation dimensional data, drawings and standard specifications, including materials and operating limits.
Section 3, Seal Recommendations by Fluid, lists over 1000 commercial fluids with respective seal
recommendations.Seal recommendations only applyto the published fluid concentration and temperature.Due to variances in commercial and technicalrequirements, alternate compatible seal materialsare listed and can be substituted at the users discretion.

SHAFT SPEED CONVERSION CHART
FORMULAS:
SHAFT SPEED CONVERSION TABLE
=
Seal chamber pressure must be known before the proper sealand flush plan can be selected. Seal chamber pressure can vary frompump design,f low rate, and fluid being pumped.Suction and dischargepressures are required to perform these calculations. Often, pump specsheets can be old and outdated i.e.,design, operating points may havechanged due to a change in process demands. It is for this reason,
that suction and discharge pressures should be physically measuredwith pressure gages.
Single Stage, Single Suction, Overhung Process PumpsOverhung ANSI pumps are the most common process pumps inthe industry. The seal chamber is located behind the pump impeller.Seal chamber pressure can vary based on pump design.Pump designs include wear rings and balance holes in the impellerto reduce thrust load on the bearings. The seal chamber pressureis a function of wear ring clearance as well as size and locationof the balance holes. The following equations are based on closedthroat design seal chambers.
Enclosed or Semi-Enclosed Impellers with Psb = Ps + .05(Pd-Ps)wear ring design and balance holes
Open Impeller Psb = Ps + .25(Pd-Ps)
Single Stage,Double Suction PumpsThe single stage, double suction impeller is Psb = Psplaced between bearings while the sealchambers are located adjacent to the suctioneyes of the impeller. The stuffing box pressureis equal to the suction pressure.
Multi-Stage PumpsMulti-stage pumps inherently have higher discharge pressures, but low to medium stuffing box pressures due to impeller arrangement, casing design, balance drums and the use of balance lines.
These multi-stage pumps can be mounted horizontally or vertically.
SEAL CHAMBER PRESSURE ESTIMATION
SHAFT DIA. (mm)
SHAFT DIA.(Inches)
Use formulas below to determineapproximate shaft speeds if not shown in chart above.
SURFACESPEED(Feetpermin.)
SURFA
CESPEED(Meterspersec.)
Two Stage Horizontal PumpsImpeller arrangement can have two configurations:1. Back to BackIn this arrangement, the seal chambers are Psb1 = Pslocated adjacent to the suction eye of the impeller. One chamber will see suction pressure and the Psb2 = Ps+.5(Pd-Ps)
other will see first stage discharge pressure.2. Eye to EyeIn this arrangement the seal chambers are Psb1 = Ps+.5(Pd-Ps)located adjacent to the backside of the impeller. One chamber will see the discharge of the first Psb2 = Pdstage and the other will see pump dischargepressure (second stage discharge).
Multi-Stage Horizontal PumpsMulti-stage Boiler Feed Pumps are used to Psb1 = Psdevelop high pressures, but the seal chamberis not necessarily at a high pressure.Thesepumps have a low pressure chamber (suctionpressure) and a higher-pressure chamber(pressure between suction and discharge).
Typically,a balance line is used to reduce Psb2 = Ps+5 bar gpressure in the higher pressure seal chamber.
Provided pump tolerances are in check, thehigher-pressure seal chamber is as follows:
NOTE: I f pump tolerances are not in check, Psb2 = Ps+.5(Pd-Ps)and in the absence of a balance line thehigher-pressure chamber will be a pressurebetween suction and discharge pressure.
Mulit-Stage Vertical Pumps (Can or Turbine)In these pumps the seal chamber is located Psb = Pdat the discharge elbow. Therefore the sealchamber pressure would see discharge pressure.
NOTE: The installation of a bleed-off line can Psb = Ps+5 bar greduce seal chamber pressure providedpump tolerances are in check.
