PREFACE The purpose of this booklet is to make the young students of the Matric and Intermediate learn

about the different colleges and universities, the courses offered, and their admission

requirements so that they can decide about their career in a better way.

The idea came, when I saw many students coming to IBA from different parts of the country but

not a single person from Quetta. The students from Quetta, despite having a strong base,

couldn’t reach the prestigious institutes and universities of Pakistan just because of the lack of

awareness and proper guidelines. So I started counseling sessions with the students from

schools and colleges in Quetta. While I was doing all this, Riyasat Ali, one of my teachers came

up with the idea of compiling a booklet that comprises of information regarding career

counseling. He supervised me throughout this project. And we materialized this project.

For the convenience of the readers, we have made a Facebook page named “The Future Begins

Here” for the questions that may arise after reading the booklet. All the students are

encouraged to join the page and post their queries.

This booklet is not free of errors and improvements can be made in the next versions. Your

feedback is highly appreciated in this regard.

We hope that it will be very helpful for the young students in deciding their careers.

About the editor: Liaqat Hussain is a third year business administration (BBA) student at the Institute of Business

Administration, Karachi. He has done his SSC from Hazara Society School and HSSC from F.G.

Degree College Quetta. He is now studying on a fully funded scholarship of the National Talent

Hunt Program (NTHP) at IBA. He is also affiliated with Markaz-e-Taleemi wa Farhangi Ummat

since 2003. He has taught at Ummat tuition center for two years.

Markaz-e-Talimi wa Farhangi Ummat is a volunteer based non-profit, non-political and non-

government organization. It was established in 1989 to formally serve the community mainly in

the field of education along with special classes and seminars on social awareness, philosophy,

history and religious workshops.

Today, UMMAT has almost 100 male and female staff. 50 of them are highly educated

volunteers running different programs of UMMAT and every year around 500 students are

benefiting from our programs.

INTRODUCTION Choosing a career is one of the turning points in one’s life, if someone becomes successful in

finding the right choice of career, then he/she will surely have a bright future. Unfortunately,

most of the students are totally confused and bewildered regarding the choice of field of

study, university/ college/ institute at matriculation and intermediate level.

Many students choose wrong fields due to lack of guidance or financial difficulties, and they

never spend enough time to clarify what they really want in professional life. In order to make

a career choice, you should know about your inner self. Once you become familiar with

your likes or dislikes, you try to explore your choices regarding your career.

Almost all the universities/ colleges provide different types of scholarships to those

students who can’t afford education expense. The guide mentions different types of

scholarship programs offered by different colleges/universities and for more detail you can

visit their websites.

In Pakistan, mostly students don’t plan their professional career during their studies and

even if they plan, their planning is very vague. For example: A student in the field of

journalism will plan to join media, but he/she never knows in which field he/she can

perform better, which field of media will be suitable for him/her. So students, when you

plan your profession you should be specific about your field.

First of all give some time to yourselves, devote some time to understand what inspires you,

what engages you, what excites you, what motivates you, what your values are, what skills you

possess, and what kind of personality you have. In this regard you can also take the advice of

a senior or an experienced person. Once you have selected your field of interest then

choose the college/institute of great importance to get to the right education and direction.

You need to consider the following points before getting admission:

1. Reputation and durability of the college 2. Faculty 3. Academic programs 4. Acceptability of the students in the job market 5. Fee structure 6. Types of scholarship program available 7. Affiliation and acceptability of the degree with foreign universities

Getting admission in the college of your choice 1. For all colleges, your school grades are important factor for your selection.

2. All Pakistani colleges almost have their own specialized admission tests, with 50%

weightage for intermediate or “A” level grades, also in cases where the admission test is

after the intermediate or ‘A‘level results. Unfortunately, most of local colleges and

universities take admission tests before the intermediate or ‘A’ level results are

announced. Thus, the admission test becomes 100% criteria for admission.

What you are not supposed to do! 1. Do not choose your career because some of your friends are doing so.

2. Do not choose your career because it sounds exciting and glamorous.

3. Do not be pushed into a career because your family or friends wants you to pursue.

A career guide would help you explore your choices by providing information about

different universities/ colleges of different fields along with types of scholarships provided.

Before going through career guide, students should identify and overcome their

weaknesses that are the basic and important steps towards a bright professional life. Every

student has certain weaknesses, but remember, “You are strong when you know your

weaknesses and you are wise when you learn from mistakes”.

1 Choosing the "Right Career"

Choosing a career is one of the turning points in one’s life, if someone becomes successful in finding the right choice of career, then he/she will surely have a bright future. Unfortunately, most of the students are totally confused and bewildered regarding the choice of field of study, university/ college/ institute at matriculation and intermediate level.

- Find a mentor or someone who can help you set career goals. -Do not choose your career because some friends or family members are doing, or which has some excitements or glamour. While choosing career consider factors like your area of interest, reputation of institution, faculty, fee structure, requirement and its recognition - Make an individual development plan with an ultimate goal of getting where you would like to be.

2 Inappropriate attitude and Behavior

Rude attitude and behavior is normally adopted from family, environment or friends around. It is mostly difficult to change attitude, but behavior can be changed through excessive hardworking and understanding to know any situation from different aspects.

-Do respect and have respect -Start thinking positive and learn how others behave well -Consult friends who you trust, and always try to get second opinion about your behavior before damaging your reputation -Try to understand any aggressive behavior by your friends or anyone and try to get to the root of basic problem

3 Lack of Basic Knowledge in Computer

Computer and technological knowledge is about everything we face in daily life, from watching movies and driving cars to the ways of business dealings. Computing enables us to solve complex and challenging problems that we face in every aspect of life. Therefore, being equipped with the knowledge of computer is essential for an educated person in the today’s world.

-Consult a tutor -YouTube can also help you with different videos -Google can help find materials regarding basic knowledge of computer -Do not feel shy for seeking your friends' help in any matter, no matter how embarrassing it might look to you, because it's always good to improve and learn from someone.

4 Lack of concentration on subject in class

If you don't understand subjects due to poor concentration definitely you will not be able to deliver in exam or discussion. This is considered to be the basic problem for weak students. You need to handle or control over those factors which bring distractions to your mind.

-Outside distractions drift your mind away from subject, make study schedule and stick to the routine. -Before you begin to study, take a few minutes to summarize and plan all those things you want to do. -Change the subjects you study after every one or two hours for variety. -Sports, proper sleep, participation in extra-curricular activities, eating on schedule improves your concentration.

5 Lack of discipline Student is the name of good behavior and distinction from other people in the society. Bad attitude disrupts learning environment and leads to social problem, in return you may receive unexpected reaction in the form of insults or punishments from teachers, staff or colleagues.

-Stop looking critically towards your teacher, school or college's environment. (Do not overreact, but explain that every objection has a proper way) -Be co-operative with class and respect others. -Learn and adjust to school policies, culture, and follow instructions seriously. -Try to discuss your problems properly with appropriate authority if any issue is raised.

-Participation Will improve your confidence, attitude and communication skills. -Find out opportunity to participate in such activities that explore your inborn ability. - Do not feel shy, explore yourself and you will feel surprised to know your talents more and more.

7 Miss-utilization of free time

Free/leisure time is an opportunity to gain advantages through fruitful activities. Some students misuse such opportunities on useless activities that destroy their career and personality.

-Improve your mentioned weakness. -Try to study books out of course also such as history, philosophy, literature, self-building, general knowledge etc. try to consult your teacher regarding such books. - Take part in sports with in limited time which can be fruitful.

8 Poor at specific subject of Science/Arts

Some students focus more on particular subjects while ignoring others due to many factors. Normally students ignore art subject and focus more on science. Remember all subjects have equal importance.

-Give proper time to the prescribed subject on daily basis. -Consult a tutor regarding your problems. -Spend more time on the subject in which you need improvement.

fields of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Pakistan. The Prime Minister's

National ICT Scholarship Program 2014 provides fully funded 4 year undergraduate degree

scholarships in ICT related disciplines in the leading ICT universities of Pakistan.

Procedure

This scholarship is provided to those students who clear the aptitude test taken by ICT. After

clearing the aptitude test, candidates are awarded the ICT scholarships and are given admission

in different universities of Pakistan depending on their performances in the aptitude test.

This scholarship covers all the expenses including tuition fee, hostel, books, and travelling

expenses.

For more details: http://www.ictrdf.org.pk/

DIRECTORATE Every year, ‘Directorate of Technical and Higher Education Quetta, Baluchistan’ announces

fixed number of reserved seats for the students of Balochistan in different engineering

universities of Pakistan. Since these seats are reserved for Baluchistan students, therefore the

original tuition fees of the universities are reduced to very low amounts. Although it is not

complete scholarship, i.e. it does not fully cover the tuition, travelling, book or other expenses

but it still does a lot to reduce the burden for the poor students. Students having 60% both in

matriculation and F.Sc can apply for these seats. After clearing the test held under directorate,

the students are offered admissions in different universities against the reserved seats

depending on their performances in the test. For further details visit the directorate office in

Shawaksha Road Quetta and get the prospectus and details.

Higher Education Comission (HEC) The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan i.e. HEC sponsors a scholarship program for the

students of Balochistan and Fata. Under this program, HEC conducts test in Balochistan and

Fata and shortlists the successful candidates. After the students are shortlisted, they are given

both seats and scholarships in different universities of Pakistan depending on their test

performances and their academic performances in matriculation and F.Sc. For the past 2 years a

discontinuity has been seen in the conductance of this program, therefore to keep yourselves

tuned about this fruitful program, regularly visit https://www.hec.org.pk/Balochistan-Fata.

Beside these all scholarship programs, some universities like COMSATS, NU-FAST, and NUST etc.

launch their irregular scholarship programs at different times. In order to be aware of these all

scholarship programs, visit our Facebook page “THE FUTURE BEGINS HERE”.
