Roadshow Rapid City Back for an EncoreAntiques Roadshow – Rapid City 1SDPB1: Sunday, June 1, 5pm (4 MT)

Three episodes of Antiques Roadshow Rapid City have aired on SDPB1 Television (in April and May), but you still have a chance to tune in. The first show encores on SDPB1 on Sunday, June 2, at 5pm (4 MT). In addition, viewers who support SDPB Television will have a chance to select a unique thank you gift – a DVD set of all three Rapid City shows and an SDPB production, Behind the Scenes at Antiques Roadshow.

The national programs detail some of the thousands of items brought to the Roadshow appraisal event last July –– the popular program’s first-ever summer tour stop in South Dakota. SDPB Television’s Behind the Scenes, recorded during the appraisal event, offers viewers an inside look at the program that has been one of the most popular of its kind ever on television.

In the first episode of Antiques Roadshow Rapid City, host Mark L. Walberg visits one of South Dakota’s greatest treasures, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, to look at presidential prints. Notable finds at the appraisal event at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center include a suite of furniture by Thomas Molesworth from the

famous “Ranch A,” valued in the six figures; and signed military documents of Elvis Presley valued at $4,000 to $5,500.

Antiques Roadshow is sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Subaru. Additional funding is provided by public television viewers. Antiques Roadshow is produced for PBS by WGBH Boston. Executive producer is Marsha Bemko.

Several local sponsors helped make SDPB’s participation in the Rapid City appraisal event possible. They include Black Hills Community Bank, Deadwood History, Inc. (Adams Museum & House, Days of ‘76 Museum and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center), and Reptile Gardens.

Sky’s the Limit for June Dakota Life

Dennis Ellingsen returns to his first calling – art.

SDPB1: Thursday, June 13, 8pm (7 MT) Friday, June 14, 10pm (9 MT) Sunday, June 16, 1pm (Noon MT)SDPB.org/DakotaLife

We’ll reach for the skies, explore art and take a trip into nature for June’s Dakota Life. The program premieres on Thursday, June 13, at 8pm (7 MT). The program airs several times during the month to give all South Dakotans a chance to tune in.

Dakota Life, SDPB Television’s signature monthly features magazine, covers the places and faces that make South Dakota such an interesting place to live.

June stories include:Called – As a young man, Dennis

Ellingsen wanted to be an artist, but then received a higher calling. He went to seminary, was ordained, and worked until a few years ago as a Lutheran pastor. Now retired, Ellingsen has returned to art.

Satellite Launch – In February, NASA launched a satellite that will help map the earth. Hundreds of people were on hand at EROS north of Sioux Falls to witness the control room style launch. Ninety days after the launch in mid-May, NASA turned the keys over to the satellite to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), which will monitor and control the satellite from

the EROS (Earth Resources Observations Systems) Data Center near Garretson.

Pettigrew Statue Dedication – This May will be the official dedication of the Richard Pettigrew monument in Sioux Falls.

Rocket Team – The Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School rocket team advances to the national finals of the TARC (Team American Rocketry Challenge) held in Virginia in May. This is the first South Dakota team to make it to the finals.

GFP Elk Tagging – South Dakota’s Department of Game, Fish and Parks was tagging elk calves at the end of May in the Custer State Park Area. We follow along and find out why they do it and how they use the information.

Check Out the Best of This Season’s Dakota LifeSDPB1: Thursday, June 6, 8pm (7 MT)

We’re taking a look back at the 2012-2013 Dakota Life season to see some of the Best of Dakota Life. The special program airs on Thursday, June 6, at 8pm (7 MT)Segments include:• Prehistoric Art/Stone Mosaics –

There are many signs of prehistoric settlement and occupation scattered around the state. These objects provide archeologists some insight into what might have been important to the people of ancient times.

• Dust Bowl Memories – Those old enough to recall the Dirty 30s talk about surviving the Dust Bowl experience of drought and economic depression in the South Dakota region.

• Casting the PCJ2 Nugget – The largest Black Hills gold nugget still known to exist was cloned at a Hill City foundry.

• Hang Gliding – A pair of Yankton-area men are fired up about hang gliding, aka “silent flight.”

• The Needles of Rushmore – A new guide for climbers features information about hundreds of routes up Black Hills rock formations. The book also offers dozens of very high quality photos taken from some very hard-to-reach vantage points.

• Turner County Fair – Why some say is the oldest county fair in the state is also still the best. The annual event in Parker has been held almost every year since 1885.

Youth Concert Explains Mendelssohn WorkSDPB1: Sunday, June 16, 3pm (2 MT)

SDPB explores the world of classical music along with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) in South Dakota Symphony’s Young People’s Concert Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony.

The annual SDSO presentation gives young children an opportunity to learn about the meaning and emotion behind great classical music. This year’s event includes musicians from the orchestra as well as actors from Teatro Filharmonico and local dancers. Mendelssohn’s work, first performed in 1833, includes elements of well-known dances of the times including

the Roman saltarello and the Neapolitan tarantella.

The presentation, led by Music Director Delta David Gier, includes information about the composer and the things that influenced his work. The Young People’s Concert is presented annually to some 5,000

FundersProgram Program Funders recognize the importance of lifelong learning

by providing support for SDPB programs in South Dakota. Program funders give $5,000 or more in support of SDPB programs.

Thank you.

Larson Family Foundation Supports Family ReadingThe Larson Family Foundation is

supporting family literacy with its funding of the Family Reading Project.

Thank you.Through the project, SDPB Online &

Education is providing free books for nearly 5,000 financially challenged South Dakota families. The books and related activity sheets are going to children in Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the state.

The Larson Family Foundation focus is to help people in need to achieve a better quality of life. The main emphasis of grants is to fulfill basic human needs such as food, clothing, shelter and education. It was established in 1990 by Dale Larson, CEO and President of Larson Manufacturing Company, the nation’s leading manufacturer of storm doors and storm windows.

The gift fulfills the Larson Family Foundation’s goal: to improve the quality of life for people in this region. It also allows SDPB to resume a project that emphasizes the important of reading and literacy for young children.
