ALbERt PALEY as he creates 13 original pieces for installation on Park Avenue in New York City on June 14. thank YOU
DEAR FRIENDS,I’m proud to share the news that we’ll be producing this summer the 10th season of WXXI’s national healthcare series, Second Opinion. And while we’re celebrating a decade of outstanding health programming that makes a difference in people’s lives (and has even saved lives), we’re not resting on our laurels.
Along with our partners, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and West 175 Productions, we continue to innovate. This coming year you’ll see major changes to our website, http://secondopinion-tv.org/. We’ll also be more engaged on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media sites, expanding the audience and reach of this important production.
Bottom line, we want Second Opinion to be even more useful to you and to our viewers across the country (more than 200 public television stations air our “made in Rochester” series every year). We appreciate the support we receive from our national sponsor, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, for helping to make all this possible.
Producing programs for our community and nation and being a leader in important areas like news coverage and arts and culture is what sets WXXI apart from other stations. We’re here for the entire community and we strive to make a positive difference every day. WXXI continues to be the lead station in the Innovation Trail project, a collaborative effort among six public media stations to report on the challenges and opportunities facing Upstate New York. Recently, we produced and presented a television documentary, A Walk Through History in Mt. Hope Cemetery, telling the story of this famous Rochester landmark (which also happens to be the final resting place of both Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass). Right now, we’re covering the remarkable story of artist Albert Paley’s latest project, the creation and installation of 13 significant metal sculptures on Park Avenue in New York City. And the list goes on and on.
We recently launched the Little Theatre “Screen Saver Campaign,” to raise the funds necessary to bring The Little into the digital world. Work starts in June, and I hope you’ll support our effort to restore this Rochester gem for generations to come.
June also brings us the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. I hope to see you at The Little catching a show in Theatre 1 as a Club Pass Venue, or at The Freed Maxick Jazz Tent in The Little parking lot where you can enjoy a quick bite to eat and free live music every night. We’ll also be producing five hours of programming from this year’s Jazz Festival for PBS stations throughout the country, letting people everywhere know that Rochester is a place for the best in arts, culture and music. Many thanks to the Wolk Foundation for their long time support of our Jazz Festival productions.
I hope you share our pride in the good work done by the talented staff of WXXI and the Little Theatre. As a member of WXXI, you help make these programs and events possible. We can’t thank you enough for your support!

MAyREE BERNSTEINNAMED WXXI’S VOLuNTEER OF THE yEARMayree Bernstein received the Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year award at WXXI’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at the end of April. Recognized for her outstanding dedication to the station, Bernstein and more than 100 WXXI volunteers attended the event at WXXI’s studios.
The Charles M. Wise Volunteer of the Year Award, named after the late Charles (Chuck) Wise – a loyal WXXI volunteer for many years, stands as a testament to Wise’s unwavering spirit of volunteerism. Each year, a committee of WXXI staff members identifies one volunteer who has been an ambassador for the mission of public broadcasting in our community. Bernstein was unanimously selected.
Bernstein has been volunteering at WXXI for the past 13 years, and in 2012 she logged more than 175 hours. Her volunteer work includes reading for Reachout Radio, answering phones during membership drives, assisting with tours of the station, helping out during special events at WXXI and the Little Theatre, and manning the WXXI booth at festivals. She also serves as a member of WXXI’s Volunteer Leadership Council. In addition to her volunteer work at the station, she also donates her time at the Winton Road Library.
Other volunteers recognized at the awards ceremony included: Mark Becker, who received the Jack of All Trades Award; Mary Hussong-Kallen, who received the Extra Mile Award; Henry Metzger, who received the Producer Award; Noah Morris, who received the Rookie of the Year; Dolores Parlato, Jim Sheldon, Alice McRae, and Carolyn Wise, who received the Group Award; and Ryan Tait, who received the Youth Award.

Shot in high-definition, Paley on Park Avenue: New York City documents the creation of Albert Paley’s 13 newly executed sculptures for The Fund for Park Avenue’s Temporary Art Collection in New York City.
“ This is the most ambitious project that any sculptor in the last decade of this program has come up with,”
explains Patterson Sims in the first episode. Sims serves as a member of the Sculpture Committee for the Fund for Park Avenue. In the series, Paley and his team talk candidly about the work involved in this endeavor and the challenges they faced. Watch Paley on Park Avenue: New York City online at WXXI.org/paleynyc. The web site also offers extended looks at each individual piece being created, photos from the studio, and social media links for more in-depth information and background.
In addition to six episodes premiering on the Web, the series will include segments broadcast Friday nights on Need to Know Rochester on WXXI-TV. WXXI radio and television will follow the completion of the sculptures and their installation on Park Avenue, culminating in a full-length PBS documentary.

THuRSDAy, JuNE 6 AT 8 PM ON WXXI-TV
In anticipation of Roger Hodgson’s performance at the 2013 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, WXXI is pleased to present this special. One of the most recognizable voices in rock history, Supertramp’s legendary cofounder and singer-songwriter presents some of his classic hits, including “Dreamer,” “Breakfast in America,” “Give a Little Bit,” “The Logical Song,” and “Take the Long Way Home.” Joined by Aaron McDonald on sax and vocals, the stripped down arrangements, propelled by Hodgson on guitar or piano, take on a new charm and vibrancy. Energetically singing along and showing their appreciation, the crowd clearly loves every minute.
During the broadcast you’ll learn more about his June 26 concert at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre and how you can get tickets.

THE WORLD OF
SATuRDAy, JuNE 8 AT 8 PM WXXI-TVOne of the most popular American entertainers of the 20th century was Liberace, a flamboyant pianist from the Midwest who became a cultural icon. Throughout the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, Liberace was one of the world’s highest-paid entertainers. To his huge fan base, the legendary artist was beloved for his warmth, humor, and his unique musical repertoire. When serious music critics panned him, his pat response was, “I cried all the way to the bank.” The World of Liberace takes an enlightening look inside the life of the famed entertainer known as “Mr. Showmanship.” Photo: allan warrenn

The LosT BIrd ProjecT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12 AT 8 P.M. ON WXXI-TVGone and nearly forgotten in extinction, the Labrador Duck, the Great Auk, the Heath Hen, the Carolina Parakeet, and the Passenger Pigeon leave holes not just in the North American landscape but in our collective memories. Moved by their stories, sculptor Todd McGrain, a former art professor at Cornell University and a native of Rochester suburb, Irondequoit, set out to create memorials to the lost birds—to bring their vanished forms back into the world. The Lost Bird Project follows the road-trip that McGrain and his brother-in-law, Andy Stern, take as they search for the locations where the birds were last seen in the wild and negotiate for permission to install McGrain’s large bronze sculptures there.

LIVING ON EARTHHosted by Steve Curwood, the award-winning environmental news program Living on Earth delves into the leading issues affecting the world we inhabit. As the population continues to rise and the management of the earth’s resources becomes even more critical, Living on Earth examines the issues facing our increasingly interdependent world.
The series presents riveting features and commentary on everything from culture, economics and technology to health, law, food and transportation. It covers topics from the small challenges of everyday life to the future state of the environment and the health and well-being of the world’s inhabitants.
Living on Earth AIRS SuNDAyS AT 4 P.M. ON AM 1370
1370 Forums & AM 1370 SpecialsState of the Re:Union with Al Letson: Back to the Basics — An American Graduate Special airs Sunday, June 2 at 9 p.m. State of the Re:Union’s American Graduate coverage continues with a special episode exploring school, community, and the dropout crisis in this country. We hear personal stories of failure and success at school, talk to experts on why kids drop out and what makes them stay, and report on innovations in teaching and learning from the Missouri Ozarks to Brooklyn, New York.
State of the Re:Union with Al Letson: Dropouts to Graduates: The Story of the Care Center — An American Graduate Special airs Sunday, June 9 at 9 p.m. Say you meet a teenager. She’s 16, has dropped out of school, is pregnant, has no job and is on her own. What would your expectations for her be? If you’re in Holyoke,
MA, the answer to those questions might be very different from the predictable one of hopelessness and dim futures. That’s because Holyoke is home to the Care Center, an alternative school just for pregnant and parenting teens who’ve dropped out of high school. In this special, Al Letson goes deep inside the Care Center—to explore what it takes to turn a teen mom’s life around.
State of the Re:Union with Al Letson: East Jackson, Ohio: As Black as We Wish to Be airs Sunday, June 16 at 9 p.m. In this episode, Al Letson and guest producer Lu Olkowski visit a tiny town in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio where, for a century, residents have shared the common bond of identifying as African-American despite the fact that they look white. Racial lines have been blurred to invisibility, and people inside the same family can vehemently disagree about whether they are black or white.

LITTLE THEATRE 2-5 CLOSED FOR THE JAZZ FEST AND THROugH JuLy 8
THEATRES 2-5 WILL BE CLOSED FROM JuNE 21 THROugH JuLy 8. During that time we’ll be installing new digital cinema equipment in all five theaters. Additionally, we will be reseating theater two. This exciting renovation is all part of our Screen Saver campaign to support our digital conversion project. The film industry is in the middle of a dramatic change in the way movies are shared and viewed by audiences. Films that would have been distributed on 35mm are now exclusively offered on hard drives. The Little does not have the digital cinema technology to show these films. The total cost of bringing digital technology to each of our five theaters is $500,000.
With your help, the Little can complete these vital upgrades. Visit our CrowdRise Page to donate and watch as our overall goal of $500,000 is tallied daily www.crowdrise.com/littlescreensaver. And, if you’d like to take an active role in our fundraising efforts, consider joining our Screen Saver Street Team. Become a Screen Saver at thelittle.org.

While located on Jefferson Road in Park Point at RIT, Zinck points out, “I would love the WXXI audience to know that that we’re not just a coffee shop. We have something for all ages. We are proud of our offerings, but what really differentiates our venue is that our team is like a family and we strive to project that close-knit vibe in amazing service.”
Lovin’cup deeply values its ongoing media partnership with WXXI. “I feel that it has been a symbiotic partnership from the beginning – and I love that it’s ‘local’ supporting ‘local,’” says Zinck. “Music is what my business is based upon, and that’s definitely why I’m most proud of our investment on a station that takes pride in supporting local and original music.”
