FOREWORDEvery human being is a recipient of gifts and talents irrespec-tive of age, race, or color. Although these are part of God's bless-ings, they are entrusted to all with certain obligations. What arethese and to what degree is one responsible for such gifts? How isone to develop and cultivate the gifts and talents received in orderto bring honor to the Lord and benefit to our fellowman? Should aperson be a mere recipient only? Would it be possible to hoardany of these heavenly blessings? The careful study of the lessonsduring this quarter will help to answer these and other relevant

questions. Our attention will be drawn especially to the following wordsof the Spirit of Prophecy: "To every man is committed individualgifts, termed talents. Some regard these talents as being limitedto certain men who possess superior mental endowments andgenius. But God has not restricted the bestowal of His talents to afavored few. To everyone is committed some special endow-ment, for which he will be held responsible by the Lord. Time, reason, means, strength, mental powers, tenderness of heart-allare gifts from God, entrusted to be used in the great work ofblessing humanity."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-ments], vol. 5, p. 1100.Believers should seek to appreciate more and more thegoodness and generosity of our heavenly Father in giving toevery man so liberally. "By pouring the whole treasury of heaveninto this world, by giving us in Christ all heaven, God has pur-chased the will, the affections, the mind, the soul, of every humanbeing. Whether believers or unbelievers, all men are the Lord'sproperty. All are called to do service for Him, and for the mannerin which they have met this claim, all will be required to render anaccount at the great judgment day."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 326.Now is the time for every student, young or old, to improveand increase his or her talents to the glory of God. We pray thatall may be determined to cultivate every faculty to the highestdegree of perfection, and also to encourage each other in this"trading on their Lord's goods" to be able to "render a faithfulaccount" when our Lord Jesus returns.

Special Project OfferingA Headquarters in Bogota, Colombia

Dear Brethren around the world:Colombia is a republic situated on the northwestern corner of SouthAmerica. It has high mountain chains as well as isolated mountains, rivervalleys and gorges, lowlands, and hilly areas. Its long coastlines are bathedby the waters of the Caribbean Sea on the north, and by the Pacific Ocean onthe west. The country borders with Panama, which divides the two bodies ofwater on the northwest; with Venezuela and Brazil on the east, and Peru andEcuador on the south. It covers an area of 1,141,748 sq km (440,831 sq mi),making it the fourth largest country in the South American continent. The population projection is expected to reach 31,686,000 by the end of1990. A former colony of Spain, Colombia is the most Roman Catholic of allother neighboring countries. Its constitution, however, guarantees religiousliberty. Spanish is the official language but some 180 indigenous languagesand dialects are also spoken.History informs us that the unequal distribution of wealth, the inabilityof the government to guarantee the people's right to live, as well as the tradi-tional and intimate relationship between the church and the state havebrought much political instability in previous years. Various reforms wereintroduced which offer a better future for the people, but much needs to bedone still. In spite of these facts, the message of Reformation faces a greatchallenge in Colombia. Missionaries and teachers have a great potential nowto educate the people. As the believers continue to promote the everlastinggospel throughout the length and breath of the country, a considerable increase of new members is seen in our midst. It thus became necesssary toestablish a center for the work. With considerable effort and great sacrificesa property was recently purchased in Bogota, the capital of Colombia.Besides the substantial debt that remains to be paid, the house on theproperty needs extensive work in order to be adequately used as a center forthe Field and also as a place of worship for the -local members. Most of thebelievers in Colombia are very poor. We are confident, however, that ourbrethren and friends in all parts of the world will cooperate with us by givinga liberal offering. The Lord will bless those who are ready to be generous, according to His promise. We thank each and everyone who is giving cheer-fully to this cause.

TO EVERYMAN o ThursdayOctober 49. What parable, closely associated by Jesus with the events of His secondcoming, outlines the fact that all are given a trust and what is the basis forthe distribution of this trust? Matthew 25:14, 15."To His servants Christ commits 'His goods'-something to be put to use forHim. He gives 'to every man his work.' Each has his place in the eternal plan ofheaven. And they are privileged to par-ticipate in His work there, because they have gained a fitness for it by participation inHis work here. What we shall be in heaven is the reflection of what we are'now incharacter and holy service. Christ said of Himself, 'The Son of man came not to beministered unto, but to minister. ' Matt. 20:28. This, His work on earth, is His work inheaven. And our reward for working with Christ in this world is the greater powerand wider privilege of working with Him in the world to come."-Ibid., p. 361.

    KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRESENT TRUTH

"The mere knowledge of truth is not enough. We may possess this, but thetenor of our thoughts may no t be changed. The heart mus t be conver ted andsanctified." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 97.KEY TEXT: "Wherefore 1will not be negligent to put you always in remembranceof these things, though ye know them, and be established in the pres

    ent t ruth." 2 Peter 1:12.

THE MOST VALUABLE INFORMATION o SundayOctober 71. What question asked of Jesus by Pilate should be able to be answered byeveryone? John 18:38 ."Christ affirmed that His word was in itself a key which would unlock the mysteryto those who were prepared to receive it. It had a self-commending power, and thiswas the secret of the spread of His kingdom of truth. He desired Pilate to understandthat only by receiving and appropriating truth could his ruined nature be reconstructed."-The Desire ofAges, p. 727.

    2. What answer had Jesus Himself given earlier to His disciples? John 14:6."Christ's favorite theme was the paternal tenderness and abundant grace of God;

He dwelt much upon the holiness of His character and His law; He presented Himselfto the people as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Let these be the themes of Christ'sministers. Present the truth as it is in Jesus. Make plain the requirements of the lawand the gospel. Tell the people of Christ's life of self-denial and sacrifice; of Hishumiliation and death; of His resurrection and ascension; of His intercession for themin the courts of God; of His promise, 'I will come again, and receive you unto Myself.'John 14:3."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 40.

ACTION REQUIRED o MondayOctober 83. What is the purpose of God in giving the present truth and what is most needed?1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:10."The life of Christ rebukes our indifference and coldness. short. He is working with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish. The warfare has been left in our hands by our great Leader for us to carry forwardwith vigor. Weare not doing a twentieth part of what we might do if we were awake. The work is retarded by love of ease and a lack of the self-denying spirit of which ourSaviour has given us an example in His life."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 407.4. What purpose revealed by Peter should be in the plan of every believer? 2 Peter 1:12.

"It [the present truth in its beautiful harmony as it is found in the Scriptures] willappear like a golden chain, link joined to link in a perfect whole."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p.448.

SERIOUS WARNING o TuesdayOctober 95. What action on the part of some who know the present truth fully, showsthat the knowledge alone will not save them? James 2:19."Jesus said: 'This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, andJesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.' All that was done and said had this one object inview-to rivet truth in their minds that they might attain unto everlasting life. . . . Itwas His aim to impart knowledge whereby men might increase in spiritual strengthand advance in the way of obedience and true holiness. He gave only such instructionas could be appropriated to the needs of their daily life, only such truth as could be

given to others for the same appropriation."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. WhiteComments], vol. 6, p. 1052.6. What danger confronted the Galatian believers? Galatians 3:1."With such a leader-an angel expelled from heaven-these supposedly wise menof earth may fabricate bewitching theories with which to infatuate the minds ofmen. . . . Those who believe in Jesus Christ are changed from being rebels againstthe law of God into obedient servants and subjects of His kingdom. They are bornagain, regenerated, sanctified through the truth."-Fundamentals of Christian Education,p.332.

A RESPONSIBILITY o WednesdayOctober 107. How did Jesus forcibly illustrate the responsibility resting on those who

know the special truths for our time? Luke 14:16, 17,22-24.8. What o ther Old Testament i l lustration emphasizes the same responsibility

particularly as the day of the Lord draws near? Ezekiel 33:7-9."Every opportunity should be improved to extend the truth to other nations. Thiswill be attended with considerable expense, but expense should in no case hinder theperformance of this work. Means are of value only as they are used to advance the in-terest of the kingdom of God. The Lord has lent men means for this very purpose, touse in sending the truth to their fellow men."-Life Sketches ofEllen G. White, p. 206.

    SPEECH

    Sabbath, October 20, 1990

"The chief requisite of language is that it be pure and kind and t rue- ' the outward expression of an inward grace.' "-Education, p. 235.KEY TEXT: "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye mayknow how ye ought to answer every man." Colossians 4:6.

CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE o SundayOctober 141. What virtue possessed by Christ should be sought after by everyone of Hisfollowers? Psalm 45:2."The power of speech is a talent that should be diligently cultivated. Of all thegifts we have received from God, none is capable of being a greater blessing than this. With the voice we convince and persuade, with it we offer prayer and praise to God,and with it we tell others of the Redeemer's love. How important, then, that it be sotrained as to be most effective for good."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 335.

    2. What counsel was given by the apostle Paul? Colossians 4:6."The one who gives Bible readings in the congregation or in the family should beable to read with a soft, musical cadence which will charm the hearers."-Testimonies,

    vol. 6, p. 380.

THE TRUE FOUNDATION ON WHICH TO BUILD D MondayOctober 153 . Whe re is the source of our utterances and what will be the influence of thespirit dwelling there? Matthew 12:34."Christianity proposes a reformation in the heart. What Christ works within, willbe worked out under the dictation of a converted intellect. The plan of beginning out-side and trying to work inward has always failed, and always will fail. God's plan withyou is to begin at the very seat of all difficulties, the heart, and then from out of theheart will issue the principles of righteousness; the reformation will be outward aswell as inward."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 35.

    4. What instruction is given that directly applies to all our communications?Exodus 20:16; Matthew 5:37."He [Jesus] teaches that the exact truth should be the law of speech. [Matthew5:37 R. V. quoted.]"These words condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletives that border

on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the evasion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresentations in trade, that are current insociety and in the business world. They teach that no one who tries to appear what heis not, or whose words do not convey the real sentiment of his heart, can be calledtruthful."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 67, 68.

INFLUENCE OF GOOD CLEAR READING D TuesdayOctober 165. When Jesus was invited to read and explain the Scriptures in the Sabbath

meeting, what impression was made on the hearers? Luke 4:16-19,22."Let all make the most of the talent of speech. God calls for a higher, more perfectministry. He is dishonored by the imperfect utterance of the one who by painstakingeffort could become an acceptable mouthpiece for Him. The truth is too often marredby the channel through which it passes."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 382.

    6. Besides being able to read clearly and distinctly, what else is of vital importance? Nehemiah 8:8.

"The culture and right use of the voice are greatly neglected, even by persons oTintelligence and Christian activity. There are many who read or speak in so low or sorapid a manner that they cannot be readily understood. Some have a thick, indistinctutterance; others speak in a high key, in sharp, shrill tones, that are painful to thehearers. Texts, hymns, and reports and other papers presented before public assemblies are sometimes read in such a way that they are not understood and often so thattheir force and impressiveness are destroyed."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 335.

WORDS CHOSEN WITH CARE D WednesdayOctober 177. What kind of speech is required of God's children on some occasions? John

2:16; Luke 19:46 ."The words of Jesus . . . struck at the root of their self-righteousness, pressinghome upon them the bitter truth that they had departed from God and forfeited theirclaim to be His people. Every word cut like a knife as their real condition was setbefore them."-The Desire of Ages, p. 239.

    8. What may we learn from a comparison between the pleasing speech of Aaronand that of Moses, Elijah or John the Baptist? Exodus 32:2-4, 26; 1 Kings18:21; Matthew 3:7-10.

" 'And now also,' said the prophet, 'the ax is laid unto the root of the trees:therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast intothe fire.' Not by its name, but by its fruit, is the value of a tree determined. If the fruitis worthless, the name cannot save the tree from destruction. John declared to the-1 2 -

Jews that their standing before God was to be decided by their character and life. Profession was worthless. If their life and character were not in harmony with God's law, they were not His people. Under his heart-searching words, his hearers were convicted."-The Desire of Ages, p. 107.

    SPEECH NEEDS TRAININGo Thursday

October 189. What k ind of speech was Titus exhorted to cultivate? Titus 2:8 .

"Instruction in vocal culture should be given in the home. Parents should teachtheir children to speak so plainly that the listeners can understand every word. Theyshould teach them to read the Bible with clear, distinct utterance in a way that willhonor God. And let not those who kneel around the family altar put their faces in theirhands close down to the chair when they address God. Let them lift up their heads andwith holy awe speak to their heavenly Father, uttering their words in tones that canbe heard."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 381.10. Why do chi ld ren need to be trained when to speak and when to keep silent?

Ecclesiastes 5:3 (last part); Proverbs 22:15."It is the work of parents to train their children to proper habits of speech. Thevery best school for this culture is the home life. From the earliest years the childrenshould be taught to speak respectfully and lovingly to their parents and to oneanother. They should be taught that only words of gentleness, truth, and purity mustpass their lips. Let the parents themselves be daily learners in the school of Christ. Then by precept and example they can teach their children the use of 'sound speech, that cannot be condemned.' Titus 2:8. This is one of the greatest and most responsibleof their duties."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 337, 338.

    INFLUENCE

"If we gather not with Christ we scatter abroad. We all have an influence, andthat influence is telling upon the destiny of others for their present and futuregood or for the ir e ternal loss." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 529.KEY TEXT: "To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the otherthe savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?"2 Corinthians 2:16.

    ALL HAVE INFLUENCED SundayOctober 21

    1. How does the apostle Paul explain that everyone has an influence and that itmay be either good or bad? Romans 14:7.

"The life of Christ was an ever-widening, shoreless influence, an influence thatbound Him to God and to the whole human family. Through Christ, God has investedman with an influence that makes it impossible for him to live to himself. Individuallywe are connected with our fellow men, a part of God's great whole, and we standunder mutual obligations. No man can be independent of his fellow men; for the wellbeing of each affects others. It is God's purpose that each shall feel himself necessaryto others' welfare, and seek to promote their happiness." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 339.

"Throw a pebble into the lake, and a wave is formed, and another and another;and as they increase, the circle widens, until it reaches the very shore. So with our in-fluence. Beyond our knowledge or control it tells upon others in blessing or in cursing."-Ibid., p. 340.2. What contrast ing resul t does Jesus say follows the influence of those con

nected with Him and those who are not? Matthew 12:30."Ever bear in mind that we are accountable for the influence we exert. Our in-fluence gathers with Christ or scatters abroad. Weare either helping souls in the narrow path of holiness or we are a hindrance, a stumbling block to them, turning themout of the way."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 47, 48.

DIVINE COUNSELS o MondayOctober 223. What illustration did Jesus use to show the result of losing a good influence?

Matthew 5: 13."Hearts that respond to the influence of the Holy Spirit are the channels throughwhich God's blessing flows. Were those who serve God removed from the earth, andHis Spirit withdrawn from among men, this world would be left to desolation anddestruction, the fruit of Satan's dominion. Though the wicked know it not, they oweeven the blessings of this life to the presence, in the world, of God's people whomthey despise and oppress. But if Christians are such in name only, they are like thesalt that has lost its savor. They have no influence for good in the world. Throughtheir misrepresentation of God they are worse than unbelievers." - The Desire of Ages,p.306.

    4. What is another illustration used by Jesus to show the great extent of the inf luence of His followers? Matthew 5:14-16."Even though a church may be composed of poor and uneducated and unknownpersons, yet if they are believing, praying members, their influence will be felt fortime and for eternity. THE SOURCE OF A GOOD INFLUENCE D TuesdayOctober 235. What connection is there between the victorious life and the talent of in

Master? John 12:32."Character is power. The silent witness of a true, unselfish, godly life carries analmost irresistible influence. By revealing in our own life the character of Christ wecooperate with Him in the work of saving souls. I t is only by revealing in our life Hischaracter that we can cooperate with Him. And the wider the sphere of our influence, the more good we may do. When those who profess to serve God follow Christ 's ex-ample, practicing the principles of the law in their daily life; when every act bearswitness that they love God supremely and their neighbor as themselves, then will thechurch have power to move the world."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 340.

THE CAUSE AND THE RESULT OFAN UNGODLY INFLUENCE o ThursdayOctober 259. What did Jesus say of those who do not preserve a l iving connection with Him?

    John 15:6.

"But never should it be forgotten that influence is no less a power for evil. To loseone's own soul is a terrible thing; but to cause the loss of other souls is still more terrible. That our influence should be a savor of death unto death is a fearful thought; yetthis is possible. Many who profess to gather with Christ are scattering from Him.This is why the church is so weak. Many indulge freely in criticism and accusing. Bygiving expression to suspicion, jealousy, and discontent, they yield themselves as instruments to Satan. Before they realize what they are doing, the adversary has throughthem accomplished his purpose. The impression of evil has been made, the shadowhas been cast, the arrows of Satan have found their mark. Distrust, unbelief, and downright infidelity have fastened upon those who otherwise might have accepted Christ."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 340, 341.10. What serious result of an evil influence should always be remembered? 2 Co

r in th ians 2:16 (first part).

"The influence of worldly selfishness, which is carried about by some like a cloud, chilling the very atmosphere that others breathe, causes sickness of soul and frequently chills to death."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 528."There are some professed Christians who are like icebergs; they seem to freezeup the cheerfulness of all who are connected with them. into the labor. The one who is slow and who works at a disadvantage should realize.that these are faults to be corrected. He needs to exercise his mind in planning how touse the time so as to secure the best results. By tact and method, some will accomplish as much in five hours as others do in ten. Some who are engaged indomestic labor are always at work not because they have so much to do but becausethey do not plan so as to save time. By their slow, dilatory ways they make muchwork out of very little. But all who will, may overcome these fussy, lingering habits. In their work let them have a definite aim. Decide how long a time is required for agiven task, and then bend every effort toward accomplishing the work in the giventime. The exercise of the will power will make the hands move deftly." -Christ's ObjectLessons, p. 344.USE OF TIME D TuesdayOctober 305. What should be always remembered even while doing secular work? 1 Corinthians 4:2; Colossians 3:22.

"Indolent, careless habits indulged in secular work will be brought into the religious life and will unfit one to do any efficient service for God. Many who throughdiligent labor might have been a blessing to the world, have been ruined through idleness. Lack of employment and of steadfast purpose opens the door to a thousand temptations. Evil companions and vicious habits deprave mind and soul, and the result isruin for this life and for the life to come."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 345.6. What lessons shou ld be taught to children and young people particularlynow when life is so difficult for the whole family? Proverbs 22:6; 26:14-16.

"By many children and youth, time is wasted that might be spent in carrying homeburdens, and thus showing a loving interest in father and mother. The youth mighttake upon their strong young shoulders many responsibilities which someone mustbear."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 345."Parents should teach their children the value and right use of time. Teach themthat to do something which will honor God and bless humanity is worth striving for.Even in their early years they can be missionaries for God."Parents cannot commit a greater sin than to allow their children to have nothingto do. The children soon learn to love idleness, and they grow up shiftless, uselessmen and women. When they are old enough to earn their living, and find employment, they work in a lazy, droning way, yet expect to be paid as much as if they werefaithful. There is a world-wide difference between this class of workers and thosewho realize that they must be faithful stewards."-Ibid.

Thenlet us work while it is day; for the night cometh, in which no man can work. 'Blessedis that servant, whom his Lord when He cometh shall find so doing' " - Testimonies to

What serious warning given by the Lord is emphasized by the apostle to thegentiles? Matthew 24:42,44; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6.

"At that tribunal [of final judgment] must they render an account who have devotedtheir God-given talents of time, of means, or of intellect, to serving the gods of this world. They have forsaken their true and loving Friend, to follow the path of convenience andworldly pleasure. They intended at some time to return to God; but the world with itsfollies and deceptions absorbed the attention. Frivolous amusements, pride of dress, indulgence of appetite, hardened the heart and benumbed the conscience, so that thevoice of truth was not heard. Duty was despised. HEALTH

"Those who perceive the evidences of God's love, who understand somethingof the wisdom and beneficence of His laws, and the results of obedience, willcome to regard their duties and obligations from an altogether different point ofview. Instead of looking upon an observance of the laws of health as a matterof sacrifice or self-denial, they will regard it , as it really is, as an inestimableblessing."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 147.KEY TEXT: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghostwhich is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For yeare bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and inyour spirit, which are God's." 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.BLESSING OF HEALTHNOT FULLY APPRECIATED o SundayNovember 4

    1. In the teaching of Jesus, what was closely associated with the gospel and inwhat measure did He plan th at it should be enjoyed? John 10:10 (secondpart)."Health is a blessing of which few appreciate the value; yet upon it the efficiencyof our mental and physical powers largely depends. Our impulses and passions have

their seat in the body, and it must be kept in the best condition physically and underthe most spiritual influences in order that our talents may be put to the highest use.Anything that lessens physical strength enfeebles the mind, and makes it less capableof discriminating between right and wrong."-Messages to Young People, p. 235.2. When people do not care for their health, what are they doing in reality and

how does the Creator regard this? Proverbs 15:13 (last part)."On the other hand, he [every man] may allow his powers to rust out for want ofuse, or to be perverted through evil habits, lack of self-control, or moral and religiousstamina. His course then tends downward; he is disobedient to the law of God and tothe laws of health. Appetite conquers him; inclination carries him away. It is easier forhim to allow the powers of evil, which are always active, to drag him backward, thanto struggle against them, and go forward. Dissipation, disease, and death follow. Thisis the history of many lives that might have been useful in the cause of God and humanity."-Coullsels on Diet and Foods, pp. 15, 16.

GOD'S GOOD PLAN o MondayNovember 53. How is the disregard of health and ability to serve the Lord equated with unfaithfulness in paying tithes and offerings? Malachi 3:8.

"Our bodies must be kept in the best possible condition physically, and under themost spiritual influences, in order that we may make the best use of our talents. . . ."A misuse of the body shortens that period of time which God designs shall be usedin His service. By allowing ourselves to form wrong habits, by keeping late hours, bygratifying appetite at the expense of health, we lay the foundation for feebleness. Byneglecting to take physical exercise, by overworking mind or body, we unbalance thenervous system. Those who thus shorten their lives by disregarding nature's laws areguilty of robbery toward God. We have no right to neglect or misuse the body, themind, or the strength, which should be used to offer God consecrated service."-Counsels on Health, p. 41.

"A failure to care for the living machinery is an insult to the Creator. There aredivinely appointed rules which if observed will keep human beings from disease andpremature death." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 16.4. When we remember who made us and the laws that govern our being, whatshould we also realize concerning these laws and any transgression of them?

Romans 6:23."Since the laws of nature are the laws of God, it is plainly our duty to give these

laws careful study. We should study their requirements in regard to our own bodies, and conform to them. Ignorance in these things is sin."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 18."The transgression of physical law is the transgression of God's law. Our Creatoris Jesus Christ. He is the author of our being. He has created the human structure. Heis the author of physical laws, as He is the author of the moral law. And the human being who is careless and reckless of the habits and practices that concern his physicallife and health, sins against God. Many who profess to love Jesus Christ do not showproper reverence and respect for Him who gave His life to save them from eternaldeath. He is not reverenced, or respected, or recognized. This is shown by the injurydone to their own bodies in violation of the laws of their being."-Ibid., p. 43.,A WONDROUS CREATURE D TuesdayNovember 65. What does God desire to see restored in men and women that was in theoriginal pair in the Garden of Eden? Genesis 1:26,27,31; Psalm 139:14.

This fact should impress us with the importance of teachingby precept and example the sin of defiling, by the indulgence of appetite or by anyother sinful practice, the body which is designed to represent God to the world."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 45.6. OLD TESTAMENT LESSONS o WednesdayNovember 77. What divine purpose is revealed in the giving of the manna and how was this

tion was placed upon them for their good. It was His purpose to supply them withfood better suited to their wants than the feverish diet to which many had become ac-customed in Egypt. The perverted appetite was to be brought into a more healthystate, that they might enjoy the food originally provided for man-the fruits of theearth, which God gave to Adam and Eve in Eden. I t was for this reason that theIsraelites had been deprived, in a great measure, of animal food."-Patriarchs and Proph-ets, p. 378."God brought the Israelites from Egypt, that He might establish them in the landof Canaan, a pure, holy, and happy people. In the accomplishment of this object Hesubjected them to a course of discipline, both for their own good and for the good oftheir posterity. Had they been willing to deny appetite, in obedience to His wiserestrictions, feebleness and disease would have been unknown among them. Theirdescendants would have possessed both physical and mental strength. They wouldhave had clear perceptions of truth and duty, keen discrimination, and sound judgment."-Ibid.8. What lesson should we learn from the uncompromising stand of Daniel and

his companions? Daniel 1:8, 14, 19, 20."There are many among professed Christians today who would decide that Daniel

was too particular, and would pronounce him narrow and bigoted. They consider thematter of eating and drinking of too little consequence to require such a decided stand,-one involving the probable sacrifice of every earthly advantage. But those who reason thus will find in the day of judgment that they turned from God's express requirements, and set up their own opinion as a standard of right and wrong. They will findthat what seemed to them unimportant was not so regarded of God. His requirementsshould be sacredly obeyed."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 30.

THE COUNTERFEIT D WednesdayNovember 217. Who is behind miraculous healings that do not bring honor and glory to theLord? What danger is associated with such healings? 2 Corinthians 11:13, 14."Many are unwil1ing to put forth the needed effort to obtain a knowledge of thelaws of life and the simple means to be employed for the restoration of health. Theydo not place themselves in right relation to life. When sickness is the result of their

transgression of natural law, they do not seek to correct their errors and then ask theblessing of God, but they resort to the physicians. If they recover health, they give todrugs and doctors all the honor. They are ever ready to idolize human power and wisdom, seeming to know no other'god than the creature-dust and ashes."-Counsels onHealth, p. 456." . . . none can disregard with impunity. Men today may not pay homage to heathen gods, yet thousands are worshiping at Satan's shrine as verily as did the king of Israel. Thespirit of idolatry is rife in the world today, although, under the influence of scienceand education, it has assumed forms more refined and attractive than in the dayswhen Ahaziah sought to the god of Ekron."-Prophets and Kings, p. 210.HEALING TO BE REVIVED o ThursdayNovember 22

    9. What should believers do when confronted with serious illness and theyhave done all that they can? James 5:14-16; Matthew 26:39.

"Praying for the sick-is a most solemn thing, and we should not enter into thiswork in any careless, hasty way. Examination should be made as to whether thosewho would be blessed with health have indulged in evilspeaking, alienation, anddissension. Have they sowed discord among the brethren and sisters of the church? Ifthese things have been committed they should be confessed before God and thechurch. When wrongs have been confessed the subjects for prayer may be presentedbefore God in earnestness and faith, as the Spirit of God may move upon you."-Counsels on Health, p. 374.

    serious? James 1:5."There are many ways of practicing the healing art, but there is only one way thatHeaven approves. God's remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not taxor debilitate the system through their powerful properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and a firm trust in God are remedies for the want ofwhich thousands are dying; yet these remedies are going out of date because theirskillfull use requires work that the people do not appreciate. Fresh air, exercise, purewater, and clean, sweet premises are within the reach of all with but little expense;

but drugs are expensive, both in the outlay of means and in the effect produced uponthe system."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 443.

    MONEY

    Sabbath, December 8, 1990

"The spirit of liberality is the spirit of heaven. The spi ri t of selfishness is thespi ri t o f Satan." - The Review and Herald, Oct. 17, 1882.KEY TEXT: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while somecoveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselvesthrough with many sorrows." 1 Timothy 6:10.

ABOUT MONEY o SundayDecember 21. What should always be remembered concerning the power to get wealth?Deuteronomy 8: 18."It is God who gives men power to get wealth, and He has bestowed this ability, not as a means of gratifying self, but as a means of returning to God His own. Withthis object it is not a sin to acquire means. Money is to be earned by labor. Everyyouth should be trained to habits of industry."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 452.

    2. How do we know that money of itself is not evil? Mark 12:15-17; Matthew17:27."The Bible condemns no man for being rich if he has acquired his riches honestly.

It is the selfish love of money wrongfully employed that is the root of all evil. Wealthwill prove a blessing if we regard it as the Lord's, to be received with thankfulnessand with thankfulness returned to the Giver."- Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 452, 453.

DANGER ASSOCIATED WITH MONEY o MondayDecember 33. What is a root of all evil according to the apostle? 1 Timothy 6:10."When men employ their powers of mind and body in obtaining riches, and arecontent with the pleasure of laying up wealth which they can never use, and whichwill prove an injury to their children, they abuse the powers which God has giventhem. They show that their characters have been made sordid by the absorbing pursuit of gain. Instead of realizing happiness, they are miserable. They have shut uptheir souls to the wants of the needy, and have given evidence that they had no compassion for the suffering."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 240.

propert ies? Isaiah 5:8; James 5:1-3."But of what value is untold wealth if it is hoarded in expensive mansions or inbank stocks? What do these weigh in comparison with the salvation of one soul forwhom the Son of the infinite God has died?"-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 453.

    6. What did Jesus say was impossible? Matthew 6:24."The case of Brother I is fearful. This world is his god; he worships money. Hehas not heeded the warning given him years ago and overcome his love of the worldwhile in the exercise of all his faculties. The dollars which he has since accumulatedhave been like so many cords to entangle his soul and bind him to the world. As hehas gained in property he has become more greedy for gain. All the powers of his being are devoted to the one object, securing money. This has been the burden of histhoughts, the anxiety of his life. He has turned all the powers of his being in this onedirection until, to all intents and purposes, he is a worshiper of mammon. Upon thissubject he is insane."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 237.

DIFFICULTY FOR THE RICH D WednesdayDecember 57. What did Jesus say was difficult although not impossible? Why? Mark

10:23-27."A rich man, as such, cannot enter heaven. His wealth gives him no title to the in-

heritance of the saints in light. It is only through the unmerited grace of Christ thatany man can find entrance into the city of God." . . . With man this is impossible, for the heart clings to its earthly treasure. Thesoul that is bound in service to mammon is deaf to the cry of human need. But withGod all things are possible. By beholding the matchless love of Christ, the selfishheart will be melted and subdued."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 394.8. Who came to Jesus but stumbled when tested on the love of riches? Mat

    thew 19:20-22.

"The lover of self is a transgressor of the law. This Jesus desired to reveal to theyoung man, and He gave him a test that would make manifest the selfishness of hisheart. He showed him the plague spot in his character. The young man desired no further enlightenment. He had cherished an idol in the soul; the world was his god. The disciples had been afraid to show themselves openly as Christ's followers, but Nicodemus and Joseph had come boldly to their aid. The help of these rich andhonored men was greatly needed in that hour of darkness. They had been able to dofor their dead Master what it would have been impossible for the poor disciples to do;and their wealth and influence had protected them, in a great measure, from themalice of the priests and rulers."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 104.

    10. What great need arose in the early church and how was it met? Acts 4:32,34,35.

"Now, when the Jews were trying to destroy the infant church, Nicodemus cameforward in its defense. No longer cautious and questioning, he encouraged the faith ofthe disciples and used his wealth in helping to sustain the church at Jerusalem and inadvancing the work of the gospel. Those who in other days had paid him reverence, now scorned and persecuted him, and he became poor in this world's goods; yet hefaltered not in the defense of his faith."-The Acts of the Apostles, p. 105.

    3:7.

"In its human wisdom the world cannot know God. Its wise men gather an imperfect knowledge of God from His created works, and then in their foolishness they exaltnature and the laws of nature above nature's God. Those who have not a knowledge ofGod through an acceptance of the revelation He has made of Himself in Christ, willobtain only an imperfect knowledge of Him in nature; and this knowledge, so far frombringing the whole being into conformity to His will, will make men idolaters. Professing themselves to be wise, they will become fools."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1068.8. 10. What is the ideal that God holds out to every intel ligent human being? Ecclesiastes 12:13.

He has an object to achieve, a standard to attain, that in-cludes everything good, and pure, and noble. He will advance as fast and as far aspossible in every branch of true knowledge. In His mercy, Jesus had pardoned her sins, He had called forth herbeloved brother from the grave, and Mary's heart was filled with gratitude. She hadheard Jesus speak of His approaching death, and in her deep love and sorrow she hadlonged to show Him honor. At great personal sacrifice she had purchased an alabasterbox of 'ointment of spikenard, very costly,' with which to anoint His body. But nowmany were declaring that He was about to be crowned king.
