Gregor Schwarz is beginning to find life at theSpths a bit too organized. Here is Frau Spthtalking to him about their morning schedule. Whodoes what and at what time?
FRAU SPTH: Wann mssen Sie morgen aufstehen, HerrSchwarz? (When do you have to get uptomorrow, Mr. Schwarz?)
(Oh, Idont know yet. I have to be at the trade
fair at nine...Ill have to leave the house athalf past eight.)
FRAU SPTH: Um sieben dann? Um halb acht? Um achtUhr? (So, at seven? At half past seven? Ateight oclock?)
HERR SCHWARZ: hhh, um sieben vielleicht. Ist dasBadezimmer dann frei? (Uh, perhaps atseven. Is the bathroom free then?)
FRAU SPTH: Also, mein Mann steht immer f rh auf, umsechs Uhr. Und bis halb sieben ist er im
Badezimmer fertig. (Well, my husband always gets upearly, at six oclock. And hes finished in thebathroom by half past six. I get up at halfpast six and have a shower straight away.During the week the children have to get upat seven. So the bathroom is occupied untilquarter past seven, but then its free.)
HERR SCHWARZ: Gut. (OK.)
FRAU SPTH: Mchten Sie mit uns frhstcken? (Wouldyou like to have breakfast with us?)HERR SCHWARZ: Ja, gerne, aber reicht die Zeit aus? (Yes, Id
like to, but will there be enough time?)FRAU SPTH: Mein Mann frhstckt schon um Viertel vor
(My husband already eatsbreakfast at a quarter to seven and leavesthe house at seven. We have breakfast athalf past seven. I have to take the childrento school at ten to eight.)
(Well, perhaps there isnt enough time.)
FRAU SPTH: Ja, das denke ich auch. (Yes, I think so, too.)
You heard several phrases with:
bis
Bis can mean either until or by. Usually, this is
clear from the context within the sentence. Listen tthese phrases from the dialog again.
How would you translate
bisin each case?
Bismeans by. He is finished in the bathroom by
half past six.
Here, bismeans until. So the bathroom is occupied untilhalf past seven.
Lets listen to the conversation again.
Am liebsten mache ich Aerobic.

Ich hre gern Musik.
Lets listen to the conversation again.Sie sind dran. (Its your turn.)
Say what David and Julia like to do using:

he like to do?)FRAU SPTH: Er malt sehr gern, und er liest auch gern.
Aber am liebsten schlft er im Garten. (Heenjoys painting very much and he alsolikes reading. But most of all he likessleeping in the garden.)
To say that she likes something a lot, Frau Spth uses:
sehr gern
Wiederholen Sie.Ich fahre sehr gern Rad.
To say what she likes to do most of all she uses:
am liebstenAm liebsten schwimme ich.
Notice how she changes the word order to emphasize:
am liebsten
She could also have said:
Ich schwimme am liebsten.
But that would have been less emphatic. Her husbanddoesnt seem to share any of her interests. To say thatHerr Spth doesnt like to do something, she uses:
nicht gern
Hren Sie zu und wiederholen Sie.
Er fhrt auch nicht gern Rad.To say that he really doesnt like doing something atall, she uses:

Man ist, was man isst. You are what you eat.
Remember that its common to use man inGerman, and not at all formal, as the excessive useof one would be in English.

for its beers. There are more than 1400 breweries in Germanyand each region has its specialties. Here are some examples.)
Pils oder Pilsner: Dieses Bier knnen Sie berall in Deutschlandtrinken. Pils ist ein helles, leichtes Bier. Aber Vorsicht: Es istauch ziemlich stark. Es ist herber als andere Biere. Das herbstePils kommt aus Jever in Niedersachsen. (Pilsner beer: You can
get this beer anywhere in Germany. Pilsner beer has a lighttaste and is light in color. But watch out: it is also quitestrong. It is drier than other beers. The driest Pilsner beer
(Export beer originallycomes from Dortmund in North-Rhine Westphalia but isbrewed throughout Germany. Export beer is a light beer, not asdry as Pilsner beer, but stronger.)
(Weizenbier is lighterthan Pilsner and Export beer, both in color and in taste. It isbrewed from wheat. Weizenbier comes from southernGermany originally.)
(Weibier is a type of Weizenbier. It isbrewed in Berlin and Bremen. It is a weak beer, weaker thannormal Weizenbier.)
Man braut es hauptschlich in Bayern.(Bockbier is a dark, sweet, heavy beer. It is also very strong. Itis mostly brewed in Bavaria.)
(Doppelbock: Doppelbock isthe strongest beer. It is darker, sweeter, and heavier thanBockbier.
Norbert has made a number of comparisonsbetween different beers. Youre going to hear thosecomparisons again. Can you remember which beeris being described? Repeat.
Es ist herber als andere Biere.Thats Pils or Pilsner.
Thats Doppelbock.
We used a lot of comparatives when we were talkingabout German beer, such as lighter, darker, stronger, weaker and so on. Normally, you just put -er on the
end of an adjective to make it comparative, just likeyou do in English:
s - ser
sweet - sweeter
Be careful with adjectives which contain the vowels a,o, and u, because some of them take an umlaut inthe comparative form. You heard two examples:
schwach - schwcher
weak - weaker, and
stark - strker
strong - stronger
You might want to learn these irregular forms.
Okay, lets see how well you remember thosecomparatives. Ill give you the plain form of theadjective and you give the comparative. Then youllhear the correct answer.
dunkel - dunkler (dark - darker)schwer - schwerer (heavy - heavier)stark - strker (strong - stronger)s - ser (sweet - sweeter)hell - heller (light-colored - lighter-colored)leicht - leichter (light - lighter)schwach - schwcher (weak - weaker)herb - herber (dry - drier)
Haben Sie es geschafft? Gut gemacht. (Did you manage? Welldone!)
