Burst of flowers, bright colours, and some subtle stitching tie together this layout about Roree Rumph’s precious little girl

Whether it’s the kitchen table or a room of its own, your crafting space is a sanctuary of creativity. Scrapbook it!

Black & white, inked-up damask gets paired with a pop of orange on this chic page showcasing Leslie Ashe’s daughter’s senior pictures.

Heritage is so much more than black & white photos and several “greats” in a row – this month, Jen helps us look to the past for inspiration.

HELLO And WELCOME to the May edition of Scrapbook Trends!I don't know about you, but the arrival of the month of May is well appreciated this year. After such a dark, cold winter, May has seemed a very long time coming. So, why all of the excitement? Apart from it being my first wedding anniversary, it is also a month during which we enjoy two bank holidays....and we are all ready for the rest! Really ready! So, with extended weekend breaks in mind, we have been working hard behind the scenes to put together a great edition of Scrapbook Trends for you to browse at your leisure.

One weekend this month, I have pencilled in a plan to tidy up and reorganise some of my scrapbooking space. After reading our 'Real Life' feature by Jerri Hush (starting on page 18), I have been inspired to take before, during and after photos. If I think back to when I started this hobby I now realise I have missed an important change in my life. It would have been fun to look back at the limited supplies I started with and how my 'collection' has grown. 'This Feeds my Creative Soul' by Christine Drumheller on page 23, is a lovely layout showing her own crafting space and what it has done for her life.

Page 82 sees the beginning of our section on using bling, and I have been inspired by Anabelle O'Malleys 'On his Play List' layout (Page 86). Her use of gems and colour on a layout about her sons music choices is just perfect; but, Annabelle has also reminded me that I need to take time to 'quiz' my boys this month and keep up to date with their favourite things lists!

Another layout I think you will love is April Fosters 'Shades of Summer' layout (Page 61). It shows how you can easily combine two of this year's trends- stitching and banners. The zigzag stitching used as the banner string not only looks fabulous...it combines the two 'halves' of the layout beautifully. For other great stitching ideas head over to the start of our stitching feature on page 58.

Also this month, we have joined up with the team at Pencil Lines (www.pencillines.com) to work with 5 great layout sketches provided by Pencil Lines founder, Anna Bowkis. Take a look at how different two people's interpretation of the same sketch can be (from page 92). I had a go at his challenge myself and loved working (and being inspired) by a sketch. It would be a great starting point for you too if you are planning some scrapbooking fun on your bank holiday weekends.

Around cyberspace this month I have noticed more and more people are embracing the idea that scrapbooking can form a cross-over with other crafts. People are re-learning forgotten skills, in particular, needlecraft.I have seen a trend for using sewing related items… be it in the manufacturers products or the crafters finished work - and this months ‘hot trend’ is for dress forms.

1 Dina Wakely mixed media work is so inspirational (it makes you want to get inky and painty right away), and her dress form book for Maya Road is simply outstanding! www.dinastamps.typepad.com

2 Iris Babao Uy shows a beautiful layout, ’Life’s Portrait’, on her blog that she made for Webster’s Pages. The Prima Marketing dress form is a perfect addition to the layout. www.irisbabaouy.typepad.com

3 Steph Devlin was a wonderful find on my blog hop… her work is absolutely stunning! Take a look at Steph’s blog to see many ideas for using dress forms, both on the page and off. www.stephdevlin.typepad.com

4 It’s off to the USA for the last trip on my blog hop. Toni (2dogs) was another great find with a great style to her work. There are several layouts on her blog with dress forms from Webster’s Pages ‘Postcard from Paris’ collection. www.lifeasascrapper.blogspot.com

[Award Winning STYLE ]

When I was very young my dream job was to name crayons. I’m still waiting on the crayon colour naming position to open at Crayola.

I will not, cannot, shall not ever like a clown. They scare me to death!

To this day, Pretty In Pink is my favourite movie. : I totally relate to Molly Ringwald’s character.

Ballet flats are my weakness. Lace doilies too. But not together. (Wait. What a cute idea!)

My husband of almost 20 years (this month) still makes my heart go pitter-pat.

“These are my daughter’s senior photos. She graduated last year and is already on her second semester of college. Looking at the pure joy on her face in these pictures makes me realize how short time is. You only get them for so long, then like butterflies...they soar. I thoroughly enjoyed this day. I loved watching our photographer catch her beauty and most of all, her personality. My daughter lights up any room she walks in. I wanted to make sure my layout emphasized how fabulous she is to all of us (especially me). I can hardly believe she’s grown!” -Leslie

Whether it’s a table in the den, a nook in the kitchen or a room all by itself, our scrapbook spaces are sanctuaries in a world of everyday chaos. It’s where we go to unwind and rewind – to relax while we create the pages that preserve our family memories.

What is your scrapbook space like? How have you made it your own? Is it an organizer’s

REAL lifeyour life as only you know it

dream with ribbon spools, embellishment trays, and rainbows of fresh paper? Or is it a mad whirl of colour, ideas and inspiration? Are you tucked away in the corner or do you get to indulge in a wall-to-wall creative sprawl? However you have arranged, decorated, and organized your special creative space, preserve the spot in a layout of its own.

I love that Amanda has photographed her workspace while she’s in the middle of a project. This picture is what we’re all about – real life! A straight stitch around the photo mat coordinates perfectly with the dashed lines on the background paper, while simple flower embellishments balance the weight of the dark mat. To make your own, cut flowers from patterned paper and adhere them to flowers punched from vintage notebook paper.

hAPPInESS IS... by Amanda DoveyCardstock, letter stickers: American Crafts; Patterned paper: American Crafts, My Mind’s Eye, Prima; Ink: SEI; Die cut machine: Slice by Making Memories (Basic Shapes 1 design card); Font: Arial

TIP: The scalloped die cut paper looks marvelous when contrasted with the straight lines of the background paper.

TIP: Take a cue from your background paper – the not-quite-perfect grid meshes perfectly with the pattern of the photographs. And for a quick way to journal on this page, list all the things you do in your scraproom.

I love the small detail photographs that Lisa used to capture all the different aspects of her scrapbooking space. From her storage and organizing containers to her special decorative touches, she showcases the things that make the space uniquely her own. She has also chosen patterned papers and embellishments that highlight the dominant colours in her space.

TIP: Layer different border pieces over one another to create something totally unique. Use wallet-sized photos to show a space from every angle.

I love how our creative styles spill over into every aspect of our lives – even the way we decorate and organize. Valerie’s scrapbooking space is filled with vintage buckets, cans, and even tin picnic baskets. She uses these antique containers to house her collection of embellishments and ephemera.

mY SPACE by Paige Evans Cardstock, buttons, letter stickers (chipboard, foam, paper, vinyl), pen: American Crafts; Patterned paper (music notes), journaling spot, labels: Elle’s Studio; Floss: DMC

TIP: Instead of a picture in the middle of your layout, try letting your journaling take centre stage. Challenge yourself to re-arrange it and see what new layout styles emerge.

Paige cleverly uses hand-stitched lines to walk us through the different aspects of her creative space. her journaling follows the lines and leads us from one picture to the next, telling a story along the way. Each line ends in a coordinating button, which completes the colourful feel of her photographs.

ThIS FEEDS mY CREATIVE SOuL by Christine DrumhellerCardstock: Bazzill Basics; Patterned paper: Collage Press, Making Memories, October Afternoon; Photo turn, gaffer tape, hole reinforcer: 7 Gypsies; Staples: Office supply; Brad, paint: Making Memories; Journaling spot: Collage Press; Letter stickers: American Crafts (large black), EK Success (little black); Utensil stamps: PSX; Ink: Ranger; Scalloped circle punch: Marvy Uchida; Decorative scissors: Fiskars; Font: 1942 Report, from dafont.com; Other: Shopping bag, bubble wrap

TIP: To get the circles on her background paper, Christine brushed white acrylic paint on a piece of bubble wrap, stamped it on a scrap piece to remove excess paint, then stamped it on her background.

Being creative refreshes and revitalizes you. Christine uses these charming food-themed embellishments to play on the idea of “feeding” your creative energies. She creates an interesting background by adding a thin overlay (cut from a shopping bag) that has a crinkly texture.

“music is love in search of a word.” – Sidonie Gabrielle

Page 38: Scrapbook April 2010

40

What’s the story behind your album?I created this album using engagement photos of my husband and I, taken at the local carnival. The song lyrics as journaling are special to us because we listened to this song the night we first met, and now my husband sings it to me almost every day. When I found the old postcards at an antique store I was so excited because I knew right away what I would do with them. I love that not only do they have little love notes on the front, but they’re also unique to us, mixing the old with the newness of our relationship.

how long did the album take you to make?It only took about two hours to create the entire album because I went with a theme and used corresponding products on each page.

Page 39: Scrapbook April 2010

4141

What is your hope for this album?I gave the album to my husband at our rehearsal dinner the night before our wedding and it’s now on display in the main living area of our home. I hope that one day my husband and I will look back at this album and remember how it all started for us, and how much we loved each other right from the beginning.

1 Gather 6-10 thick, vintage postcards. (If you can’t find any, print vintage images on cream cardstock; glue it to chipboard for extra thickness.)

2 Embellish the images with fabric, ribbon, etc., and add photos and printed journaling to the back of the pages.

3 Punch two holes through the left hand side of each page, using an eyelet setter or a Crop-A-Dile.

4 Fasten the finished pages together with binder rings.

Mixing your own handwriting with letter stickers and typed journaling gives your project an eclectic feel, while also preserving a little piece of “you.”

Don’t be afraid to alter. Cheryl added cute little details to the images on the vintage flashcards, like a fabric ribbon bow on the girl’s head and pieces of colourful fabric on the straws.

Every scrap has a purpose! If you’re thinking about throwing away your leftover bits of fabric and paper, consider storing them in a cute box or bag for projects like this where you only need bits of colour here and there.

Congrats on your new marriage Cheryl, we wish you all the best!

once upon a time there was a little girl that re-ally wanted to be a princess. She dreamed about being

a princess every night and thought about being a princess all day. One day, the little girls who wanted nothing more than

to be a princess, met a magic bunny. This magic bunny told her that she could have anything she wanted, as long as she would go get the bunny some spinach out of the garden. The little girl, overjoyed at the prospect of finally fulfilling her hopes and dreams and becoming a

princess, raced to the garden as fast as she could. When she got there, instead of a beautiful green garden that had been there that

morning, there was only blakc, charred earth, devoid of life, and most importantly, any spinach.

Stories to TellBy jEnniFEr GALLACHEr

WHEN I SAY “heritage” you probably call up black & white photos, muted colours, and lots of “greats” strung together. And yes, those antique photos and albums are definitely heritage – but it’s so much more than that. Our heritage includes the legacy of traditions, traits, and values that we share with our families – past, present, and future. To me, heritage is all about relationships, family memories, and messages of hope and truth for those to come. It could be your ethnic history, your legacy of faith, your learned habits (neuroses?), your family’s history, or anything else that connects you to those who came before you.

I was recently browsing through old photo albums my mother kept since I was a child. I pulled my children over, and we laughed at

...”heritage includes the legacy of traditions, traits, and values that we share with our families

my chubby little baby body, talked about how my grandparents’ lake in Michigan froze over every winter, and wondered over people in the photos we did not know. It was a bonding experience for us as we compared my life in the past to theirs now.

I also stumbled on one of my great’s journals, transcribed for the next generation by another relative. Grandpa Adam’s handwriting is worn and faded, but the stories that remain are rich in faith and history. I learned that he lost not one, but two children to illness – this was a life experience I did not know we shared, and it bonded me to him in a unique way. It also reminded me of the importance of recording my personal history. I value the thoughts and legacy he left, and I hope the stories I’m leaving for my own posterity will become a cherished history for them as well.

once upon a time there was a little girl that really wanted to be a princess. She dreamed about being a princess ev-ery night and thought about being a princess all day. One day, the little girls who wanted nothing more than to be a princess, met a magic bunny. This magic bunny told her that she could have anything she wanted, as long as she would go get the bunny some spinach out of the garden. The little girl, overjoyed at the prospect of finally fulfill-ing her hopes and dreams and becoming a princess, raced to the garden as fast as she could. When she got there, instead of a beautiful green garden that had been there that morning, there was only blakc, charred earth, devoid of life, and most importantly, any spinach.

use whatever style works for you when making heritage layouts. This layout also uses an older photo and documents family memories from years gone by, but nicole used a modern colour scheme and design. The vintage-style ephemera tie the present to the past, as does the ledger background paper. And I love when good design and frugality meet – notice how she cut the “road trip” accent in half and arranged the pieces opposite each other.

not all our ancestral stories will have photos to support them. This layout’s journaling was taken from a letter written by my great-great-grandfather to his daughter, Virginia. In this letter we discovered a special message of love and faith to his grandchildren – what could be more important to share when including stories in your albums? When you have a word-only layout, choose colours and embellishments that draw the reader into the story – no photo necessary.

I don’t feel all that old… but the past is the past, which makes any photo from your childhood or your parent’s childhood “heritage.” Inspired by the washed out colours in this older photograph, I lament in my journaling the fact that I, like the clothing and toys I enjoyed as a child, can now be defined as vintage.

Are you leaving a legacy for your own posterity? Be sure to include messages in your scrapbooks that are important to you: messages of faith, hope, values, memories, and people not to be forgotten! Including layouts in my scrapbooks about my son who passed away is a vital part of sharing his memory with others who have never met him. Because he did not keep his own record, it is up to me to share his life with my family and friends.
