Welcome to Scott Medical and Healthcare College

Martyn Cox BSc, MBA, [email protected]

Your time at Scott College will lead you to a lifelong career in the medical, social and health care sectors. Scott College is different to the other schools in the city because it focuses on the healthcare sector. Work has started on our new, purpose-built building with the latest equipment designed to meet the needs of a 21st century healthcare learning environment. We have recruited great teachers, who each share the vision for Scott College - supported by our distinguished sponsor school, Stoke Damerel Community College. Our partners reflect our focus: Livewell

Southwest, Plymouth University Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust, the city’s biggest employer. These partners bring a wealth of expertise and opportunities for all our students and will offer a significant number of interesting, relevant work placements and preparation for university which you will experience if you join us. I hope you enjoy reading our prospectus and I look forward to meeting you at one of our open days or visits.

We have named our Medical and Healthcare College after the world-famous explorer, Robert Falcon Scott, who was born in Stoke Damerel, Devonport. It’s that spirit of exploration which drives us and I hope you will join us on your own journey of discovery in our innovative, challenging and supportive teaching environment at Scott College.

Caring to learn - learning to care

“Parents and students tell us that it is the deep support from our partners as well as our sponsor Stoke Damerel that makes Scott College an attractive option for students in Plymouth and across Devon and into Cornwall.”Martyn Cox, Headteacher, Scott Medical and Healthcare College

Our school provides a new approach to learning, blending traditional teaching with real, project-based learning and work experience. You will work in small groups with individual support from professional mentors. Joining us makes sense if you plan to pursue a career in the medicine and healthcare sectors.

Scott College has a maximum of 375 students at full capacity so each year group will have just 75 students. That means smaller classes and a higher teacher- to-student ratio, delivering more time and one-to-one support. Small schools like ours combine traditional teaching with a pioneering approach to learning with a focus on teaching through projects individually designed for you. Plus we offer an extended school day so it’s more like work and university. Your learning will be rooted in the real world, which helps you develop the skills and experience you need to flourish in life and work. Guided by local healthcare employers, we offer a range of academic and vocational

qualifications at Levels 2 and 3. These include GCSEs in Chemistry, Physics and Biology, English and Maths at Key Stage 4 . At key stage 5 we offer A Levels and Level 3 Vocational qualifications as well as an access path for those looking to improve their grades. Crucially, we offer work placements linked directly to employment opportunities in the medical and healthcare sector. You will gain a broad range of employability and life skills through the CREATE skills framework and PiXL Edge. We expect our students to progress on to university, further training, apprenticeship and into employment after completing their studies at Scott College.

We are different, we are a small school

Project-based learning works to accelerate your learning across the curriculum by developing skills such as independent research, presentation skills and speaking and listening skills - just the sort of skills our employment partners tell us you need.

Project-based learning helps you become work-ready

Projects will be developed with our Healthcare employer partners who will set the research project briefs. The first thing we will do is teach you all about projects and project teams and the best way to learn from them. You will complete a range of projects, which may last from just a few days to several weeks each. This learning is similar to the approach taken by Plymouth University in many of their medical and health sciences degrees, where problem-based learning is used to teach many aspects of the course to undergraduate students.

Being professionalBriefings will take place each week, where you will meet with your project team and your personal coach. These meetings will follow a formal structure, where one of the team will chair the meeting and take notes. In these meetings you will review progress towards completion of the project, as well as discuss action points for the following week. We will encourage and support you to complete a voluntary work placement outside of your school hours, such as supporting after-school activities in local primary schools, working in afterschool clubs or taking part in voluntary work in a healthcare setting.
