    Part One

Physical evidence thatenergies associated withpsychic or spiritual healingcan be detected andmeasured, using standardlaboratory equipment, maybe one of the most excitingdevelopments of this decade.

    Furthermore, these

subtle energies seem to beelectrical in nature. They alsomay be more than that (manyhealers contend the source oftheir energies is divine), butexperimenters are beginningto use a term for healingenergies coined by the lateBaltimore healer AmbroseWorrall--para-electricity,meaning beyond electricity.

Authority for thepreceding statements is Dr.Robert N. Miller (Ph.D.),

industrial research scientist, who heads a team ofphysicists and healersattempting to determine howthese energies are generated, how they are stored and howthey may be used withmaximum efciency.

It was Dr. Miller andthe research team, including

Dr. Philip B. Reinhart, chairman of the physicsdepartment at Agnes ScottCollege in Atlanta, Georgia, who proved that the para-electricity transmitted by ahealer can be directed to aparticular location and theredetected by appropriatelaboratory device.

    The device was a

modern cloud chamber (amodication of the Wilsoncloud chamber invented by

British physicist and 1927Nobel Prizewinner Charles T.R. Wilson) ordinarilyemployed to study the pathsof subatomic particles whichare made visible in asaturated air and alcohol

vapor. Dr. Miller and Dr.Reinhart rst tested thedevices effectiveness for

detecting psychic energieswhen healer Olga Worrall

visited the college in January,1974. For many years Olgaworked with her husbandAmbrose and has continuedher free healing services andresearch with physicians andscientists since his death in1972.

    Physicalevidence that

    energiesassociatedwith psychicor spiritualhealing canbe detectedandmeasured,usingstandardlaboratoryequipment,

may be oneof the mostexcitingdevelopmentsof thisdecade.

    She and Dr. Miller reported

on their experiments, includingthose in the laboratory andsubsequently at a distance, before anaudience of some 1,700 personsat a symposium on Thought AsEnergy at the beautifulFounders Church of Religious

Science in Los Angeles inFebruary 1976. The program wassponsored by the Ernest HolmesResearch Foundation whichhonors the churchs founder andprovided funds for the project.

The Miller-Worrallpresentation was titled Scienticmethods for the Detection andMeasurement of HealingEnergies, admittedly a boldstatement of accomplishment inan area usually considered to beentirely paranormal.

Dr. Worrall (she has twohonorary doctorates) describedwhat happened when she placed herhands near the cloud chamber butdid not touch it.

I visualized healing energyowing from my hands, she said, just as I do when treating a patient. After about half a minute we saw awave pattern develop in the sensitivezone of the chamber. The waveswere parallel to my hands andseemed to be moving from the righthand toward the left. She hadpreviously said she does her mosteffective healing work with her lefthand.

After several minutes, Ishifted the position of my hands90 degrees. The waves began to

change direction and soon weremoving at a right angle to theiroriginal path. Other members of theresearch team placed their handsaround the cloud chamber to see ifthey could produce a visibleeffect. Nothing happened.

Several weeks later theexperiment was repeated at adistance of some 600 miles. Dr.Worrall was at home in Baltimore,

Maryland and the cloud chamberwas still at the college in Atlanta. What happened was not precisely

according to plan but the resultsperhaps were even moremeaningful than if the plan hadbeen strictly followed.

Dr. Worrall explained, Dr.Miller asked me to concentratemy thoughts and energies on thecloud chamber at exactly 8:50 P.M.He also suggested that I mentallyhold my hands at the sides of thechamber for several minutes andthen change the orientation 90degrees as I did when I was actuallypresent in the physics laboratory.

But I was not able to reversethe ow because they forgot to tellme they had changed lab rooms. Sowhen I projected my mind to theoriginal room it was in darkness andI had to go down the hall and ndone that lighted. I was quiteannoyed with them because they

didnt tell me where it was going tobe. So I forgot to reserve my hands!

Nevertheless, the experimentwas a success--in more ways thanone. At 8:53 the mist in the cloudchamber began to pulsate and thewave motion continued forapproximately seven minutes. Thenthe motion subsided but did notchange direction. It was theirfault, said the healer.

The scientists waitedexpectantly for a change ofdirection of the wave motion. Itnever came, thus eliminating any

idea that suggestion on their partwas affecting the results.

A second transmissions ofhealing power to Atlanta fromBaltimore a few minutes laterproduced similar results, and eightminutes were required for theunidirectional undulations in the

cloud chamber to subside. This was a further vericationof the physical effect of healingenergies, including absent healing, and the implication is inescapable:that it is reasonable to believe suchenergies may have a profoundinuence on body cells. So Dr.Miller and his colleagues set abouttrying to nd other methods ofdetecting the energies and, probablymore important, a method ofmeasuring them. Since plants are living systems,

and like human beings, are reputedto have an etheric or nonphysicalcounterpart, there was a goodpossibility they could serve asdetectors, said Dr. Miller.Absorption of the energy by thenonphysical part of the plant couldproduce a measurable reactionin the physical.

The use of plants as detectorsalready has been tested. Dr. BernardGrad at McGill University inCanada had demonstrated that ahealer can increase the growth ofplants. Sister Justa Smith, a nun whois a noted biochemist at Buffalo,New York, had found that the samehealer was able to inuence thegrowth of enzymes.

I visualized healingenergy owing from my

hands, she said, justas I do when treating apatient. After about half aminute we saw a wavepattern develop in thesensitive zone of thechamber. The waveswere parallel to myhands andseemed to be movingfrom the right handtoward the left.

At the Los Angeles meetingDr. Miller reviewed a 1965experiment in which Olga andAmbrose Worrall in Baltimoresucceeded in producing an 840percent increasein the growth of rye grass in theAtlanta laboratory 600 miles away.

Since then polygraph expert CleveBackster and experimenter MarcelVogel have demonstrated thatthought can produce changes in theelectrical potential of plant leaves. So at Agnes Scott College Silvachloride electrodes were attached toa leaf of a philodendron plant. These were connected to a stripchart recorder through pre-amp andamplier systems. An oscillating,low-amplitude electrical signal wasregistered. When Dr. Worrall placeher hands four inches from the plantthe amplitude increased markedly. To prove this was not a standardcapacitance reaction, with thehealer acting as a kind of antenna, other researchers tried to producethe same results. They managedonly a slight effect.

With another healer, workingat a distance of eight feet, the plant

potential at rst decreased butthereafter marked increases inamplitude were noted.

Next the researchers soughtto establish the brain wavefrequency most efcient for healingenergies. Not surprisingly, theyfound the healers were in the alpharhythm, described by Dr. Miller asthe deep meditative state (eight to13 cycles per second) while

transmitting healing energies to testsubjects. During biofeedback

experiments Dr. Worralls normalstate of consciousness varied from14 to 25 cycles per second; this isthe beta state, typical for mostpersons while awake. But during thelaying-on-of-hands the alpha statewas achieved with extremerapidity--in eight seconds--whereas mostpeople take from ve to 20 minutesto reach this meditative state.Another healer was found tooperate in both the alpha

and theta ranges, or from a relaxedpre-sleep frequency into a light sleepstate (three to seven cycles persecond). Below three cycles persecond is regarded as a deep sleepor delta state.

One objective of the researchwas to discover the precisemechanism of spiritual mentalhealing. The scientists nowdecided they had a clue: on theboundary between the consciousand unconscious state, whendistracting sense stimuli are at aminimum, it is possible to givedirection to the subjective-subconscious mind with minimalinterference The results of theexperiments conrm this concept,

reported Dr. Miller, and theyindicate that the alpha state ofconsciousness is the most effectivestate for mental healing.

The research team thenattempted to develop a methodfor measuring healing energies. Firstthey experimented with copper saltsolutions. After making sure thatimportant variables werecontrolled--such as the volume of

the solution, the relative humidity ofthe environment (50 percent),temperature and source of water--the scientists asked Dr. Worrall toplace her hands around a containerof the solution. Another untreatedsolution was used as a control.

In two days both solutionscrystallized but the treated specimenturned from jade green to blue, whereas the control crystalsremained green. Moreover, thetreated solution yielded a coarser

grained crystalline structure thanthe control solution.

Scores of tests led to theconclusion that copper salt solutionsare reliable indicators of thepresence of energies. Thereaftermicroscopic examination of thecrystals convinced Dr. Miller thatthe differences--induced by thehealer--were due to changes in theproperties of the water. (This tendedto conrm Dr. Grads experimentalresults at McGill where seed andplant growth at rst were stimulatedby the proximity of the healershands but later by treated waterfrom containers he had held in hishands.)

After numerous tests for viscosity, electrical conductivity, capacitance and refractive index,Dr. Miller and his associates foundthere were signicant differences inthe surface tension of healer-treatedand untreated water. This might bethe measuring stick they are seeking.Dr. Miller explained it this way: The surface tension of a liquid is a

measure of the attraction of themolecules at the surface and is

related to the bond energies of themolecules and is usually expressedin dines per centimeter.

Specimens of water wereprepared in which the healerplaced the forenger of each handfor three minutes. The energizedwater showed a surface tension of62.9 dines; the control water, 70.1dines. (Atlanta city water was used.)Comparable results were obtained

    with a second healer.

    T H E S I L V A A R C H I V E S

The results of theexperiments conrm thisconcept, reported Dr. Miller, and theyindicate that the alpha stateof consciousness is themost effective state formental healing.

A decrease in surface tensionlikewise was noted when water wastreated by a non-healer, but thiswas not as pronounced as when thehealers treated the water. Eventuallyit was determined that the surfacetensions of treated and untreateddistilled water--the tension being

signicantly reduced after exposureto a healers hands--constituted thebest method yet discovered fordetecting and measuring energies.

Dr. Miller said this discoverymay be one of the most excitingdevelopments of this decade, because it means that we not onlyhave discovered a method ofdetecting the energy associatedwith healing. but we can alsomeasure itquantitatively. Furthermore, wehave veried that such an energyactually exists.

He referred to it asprimary energy or, usingAmbrose Worralls term, para-electricity. He declared it was thesame as the life force of theancient Chinese, the prana ofthe yogis, the odic force of vonReichenbach, the orgone energyof Wilhelm Reich. He predicted:We will now be able to determinethe characteristics of this subtleenergy, how it can be generated, stored and used with a maximumefciency.

Another step toward thisgoal was a series of experimentswith magnets. Since the days ofAnton Mesmer in the last centurythere have been magnetic healers.

So the researchers in Atlantadecided to compare magneticenergy with that of a healer. Waterwas exposed to a magnetic eld of1500 gauss for 15 minutes andcompared with control water andhealer-treated water.

The results: surface tension ofthe control water--75.6 dines; ofwater treated by a healer--60.7dines; of water from the magnetic

eld--60.4 dines. There seems some justication for using the wordmagnetic in connection withhealing.

Further verication wasobtained by exposing coppersalt solutions to a magnetic eld. Ineach case the resultant crystalsturned turquoise blue (as had thosetreated by a healer), while controlcrystals remained jade green.

    Dr. Miller and his colleagues

concluded: These experimentshave shown that the energy from ahealer and from a magnet havesimilar effects upon the water andupon solutions of copper salts.

But he said the question stillremains: Is the energy from amagnet a healing energy?

He recalled that Mesmer onceused magnets for healing bymanually passing them over variousparts of the body but abandoned thetechnique when he found thatpasses with his hands aloneseemed equally effective. He felt hishands rather than the magnets, hadbeen responsible forthe effects all along.

Our experiments, however, indicate that the magnet itselfproduces a measurable (healing-type) energy, and if we can equatethe growth rate of plants withhealing, the results would alsoindicate that magnets do emit ahealing energy, said the scientist.

Distilled water treated by amagnet and water treated by Dr.Worrall were used to grow rye grass

seeds under carefully controlledconditions. After four days ofhealer- treated seeds had ninesprouts; the magnetized cups had17 sprouts, and control cups wateredwith Atlanta tap water had only twosprouts. However, it was noted thatthe water treated by Dr. Worrall was

a month old, whereasthe magnetized water was fresh eachtime. later it was determined thatfreshly magnetized water gave up itsenergy after two or three days.

Finally, after eight days, thegrowth of the control plants andthose watered with the magnetizedwater was compared. The averageheight of the control grass was 2.8inches and that of the magnetically

treated specimens, 3.6 inches. Because Russianexperimenters had reported that astrong magnetic eld will affect theproperties of water by changing thehydrogen bonding in the H20molecules, samples of healer-treatedwater were sent to an expertfor analysis. An infraredspectrophotometer was used todetermine whether there would bethe same kind of changes as wereseen by the Russians. As a result,We have positive evidence that theenergy from a healers hands causesa change in the molecular structureof water.

Dr. Miller explained: Waterin the normal state has manyhydrogen bonds normallydistributed. When energy is added, whether by a healer or through theuse of magnets, the bond energies

are changed. This in turn causes achange in the surface tension of thewater. However, water which is soenergized will eventually give up itsenergy and revert back to its normalstate.

What it means, he said isthat we have been successful inbringing the energy associated withhealing from the realms of folkloreto its proper place as a recognizedenergy on the frontiers of modernscience. We have provided missingpieces in the puzzle of how healingoccurs.

Our results indicate that the healereither transmits energy to thepatient or mentally creates thecondition for the patient to absorbenergy from his surroundings. Thecells and the organs in the bodyresume their normal functionwith increased vigor and the healing

takes place. Dr. Miller, former professor of

chemical engineering at GeorgiaInstitute of Technology and now aresearch scientist for the LockheedAircraft Company in Georgia, is amember of the advisory committeeof the Ernest Homes ResearchFoundation, along with a number ofother scientists and physicians. Thefoundation is unique in that itrepresents a major effort by achurch--the United Church ofReligious Science--to verifyscientically certain religiousconcepts that have been known forages, including spiritual healing and the relationship of body, mindand spirit. The foundations researchprogram is supervised by a board ofdirectors headed by Willis H.Kinnear, publisher of Science of

Mind Magazine, which was co-sponsor of the symposium. Amember of the board is RobertYoung, the Dr. Marcus Welby oftelevision, who was chairmanof the program. Another speaker who

veried the existence of healing energies was Dr. Thelma Moss, internationally knownparapsychologist and assistant

professor of psychology atthe University of CaliforniasNeuropsychiatric Institute in LosAngeles. She submitted visual andmedical evidence of the powerassociated with mental or spiritualhealing, based on extensive studiesof numerous healers, including Olga Worrall and a magnetichealer who helped a badly injuredman avoid a seemingly inevitableleg amputation at the UCLAMedical Center. Dr. Moss said her work withradiation (Kirlian)

photography veried Dr. Millersndings concerning the objectivenature of healing energies.Interestingly enough, one of theleading critics of this kind ofphotograph as an investigativetook, Dr. William A. Tiller, StanfordUniversity physicist, also was aspeaker at the symposium onanother subject. He did not discussthe radiation ndings, but FATElearned he had changed his mind tosome extent about the signicanceof Kirlian technique.

Investigators discover that healers suchas Olga Worrall emanate electromagneticenergies which radiation photography canmeasure.

It wasnt too long ago that talk ofmagnetic healing, auric elds and ethericbodies was considered thoroughly unscienticand so traditionally metaphysical as to beoutside the realm of physical research, although certain pioneers-- generallyregarded as discredited in their own times--had laid the groundwork for laterexplorations.

Now energies associated with theseterms are being observed and measured bylaboratory investigators using physical toolswithin the guidelines of scientic disciplines.True, there may have been some raisedeyebrows in the scientic community whenDr. Robert N. Miller, an industrial researchscientist, announced he had been able todetect healing energies at a distance of 600miles in a cloud chamber designed to studythe paths of subatomic particles.

Nor were there great whoops of joyfrom the orthodox establishment whenparapsychologist Thelma Moss of theUniversity of California at Los Angelesrevealed she has produced visual evidence ofthese same kinds of energies in herexperiments with Kirlian photography, also

supposedly a discredited technique importedfrom Russia.

Nevertheless, since both Dr. Miller andDr. Moss are respected researchers, theirndings cannot be dismissed lightly.

Thelma Moss is an assistant professorof medical psychology at UCLA, but herparapsychology laboratory has won widerecognition for a variety of ESP experimentsconducted there, (Once asked if they--presumably the faculty and administration ofthe university--were proud of her because

of this international recognition, she repliedshe felt they were tolerant, embarrassed, butnot proud!)

The key word in her latest ndings, asin Dr. Millers, is energy, and that is why shetoo was a speaker at a Science of Mindsymposium on Thought as Energy at theChurch of Religious Science in Los Angelesin February 1975.

Energies associated with these termsare being observed and measured bylaboratory investigators using physicaltools within the guidelines of scienticdisciplines.

Using the radiation (Kirlian)technique, in which photographsare taken with high-voltage, highfrequency electrical discharges, Dr.Moss believes she has shown

visually what Dr. Miller and hisassociate, Dr. Philip Reinhart, demonstrated in an Atlanta,

Georgia, physics laboratory. All ofthem believe a perceptible energytransfer takes place between aprocient mental or spiritual healerand a patient or for that matter anytarget toward which the healingenergies are directed.

Fingertip radiation pictureswere taken of a healer who rstplaced his ngers on a lm while hewas in a normal or resting state. The resulting Kirlian photographshows what Dr. Moss says is a veryfull discharge from the nger pads. The discharge also is called acorona or aura and although Dr.Moss does not attempt to denespecically such occult terms asaura and etheric body, neither doesshe shy away from them.

While the healer presumablyconcentrated on healing, newpictures were taken, on color lm as

before. The discharge pattern hadchanged. What had been a fullblue-white corona became a blotchof orange-red. Then as morepictures were made during thehealing procedure, the ngertipemanations began to diminish untilthey completely dissipated.

Something had gone out ofit we like to think, Dr. Moss says.

Conversely, a patient who is ill

and debilitated was found to show a very small irregular dischargepattern, usually with gaps in thecorona. What the gaps mean is notcertain. Yet after healing the gapsoften will have disappeared and thecorona will have lled out.Meanwhile, tests using non-healersas controls produced no such results.

The experiments have beenrepeated many times but since theyin themselves do not prove healingpower, Dr. Moss embarked on aseparate program in an effort to

    authenticate mental or psychicheading.

Two rules were established forthe program: (1) the patient must bereferred by a doctor who wouldprovide medical records, and (2) thereferring doctor must admit it is alast chance that he can do

nothing more for the patient. Dr.Moss described two spectacularstudies, the rst involving a youngman with a paralyzed arm.

A neurologist sent him to us,saying he could do nothing more forhim, she reported. He is nowshing with that arm. Theneurologist is amazed.

Successive Kirlian picturesappeared to show an increase in thecorona pattern of the patientsnger pads as the healing treatmentsprogressed. The patient seemed toget more energy, Dr. Mosscommented.

The healer, Jack Gray, usesso-called magnetic passes in muchthe same manner as Anton Mesmerused them in the last century. Graywas the healer in the other lastchance case also. Dr. Mossdescribed the circumstances:

I received an urgenttelephone call from the mother ofa young man who was taken to thehospital at UCLA after anautomobile accident. It was anemergency. His right leg was so

totally shattered the doctors insistedit would have to be amputated. They said if they did not amputateit, he would never be able to walk

again; that the leg could not heal;that he would become addicted topain-killing drugs and still therewould be incessant pain. Modernmedicine gave him no hope tosaving the leg.

Gray was called in at about8:00 P.M. and remained until 5:00

A.M., working with passes at adistance. The young man wasscreaming, Cut it off ! Cut it off ! Icant stand it!Gray tried to approach as close asone foot but the patient cried outthat this increased the pain. However, as the night wore on Graywas able to move his hands closerand closer until nally he wasworking at a distance of 12 inches.he continued this for about twohours.

What was happening? Dr. Moss theorized: Lets say that

the etheric body or the energy bodyhad extended itself that muchbecause of the dire stress the boywas in. But after two hours he didfall asleep and after a week of thiskind of treatment he was feeling nopain.

That was two years ago.Today he is walking, sometimes witha cane, sometimes without, and hehas never had an amputation. Thedoctors quite agree they do notunderstand what happened.

Dr. Edgar Damson, professorof orthopedic surgery at the UCLAMedical Center, said , sometimeafter the success of the treatment,He was presented to a conferenceat the medical school and the

general consensus of the consultingsurgeons, as well as the others inattendance at the conference, wasthat amputation should be done. Byall odds, this fracture should neverhave healed. But it did. I have noexplanation for this at all, just as Ihave no explanation as to why hispain went away so quickly. We triedacupuncture. We tried hypnosis.Nothing that I did and nothing thathe did made his pain go away. So Idont know what the answer is.

Dr. Moss commented that X-raystaken after eight months of therapyby the healer show a change in thebone matter had taken placewhich should not and could nottake place according to knownmedical science.

    Gray used suggestion as well

as magnetic healing power, howeverthat power may be dened. Duringthe latter days of the therapy hewould say to the patient. Tell

yourself, I can walk! I can walk!Without crutches! Walk! Turnaround! Dont be afraid. Remember, there is nothing to fear.

But Gray believes theradiation experiments prove he hasa psychic energy that can be

transmitted. To do effective healing, Imyself have to be healthy, he says.Since I am healthy, normal andnatural in every way. I am able todirect the energy to the body of thepatient. There it is picked up andgoes wherever it is needed. This ishow I believe it works.

For two days before theyappeared as speakers at theThought As Energy Symposium,Dr. Moss tested Olga Worrall atUCLA using radiation photography. The results were similar to thoseobtained with Jack Gray and otherhealers. First, pictures were taken inher normal state and then whileMrs. Worrall was healing. When theWorrall pictures were developed Dr.Moss found there was anenormous increase in ngertipcorona discharges.

The Baltimore healeralso demonstrated the spectaculareffect of her energy on a piece ofblack and white lm which shesimply held between her ngertipswithout exposing it to light. After

about two minutes the lm wasdeveloped. The resulting pictureshowed a strange cloud-like wavepattern with what one observercalled surrealistic bands.

Asked what it was Dr. Worrallsaid, I dont know what you

modern scientists call it but we usedto call it ectoplasm.

She had done the sameexperiment at the same laboratorytwo years before, which led Dr.Moss to believe that healing energywas being photographed without acamera, without electricity or otherarticial agent. This time, however, skeptical laboratory assistantsdecided to repeat the experimentwith ve layers of lm, stacked onebehind the other. Meanwhile, thedeveloper was changed andcarefully checked. A control lmwas put through (with no effect) andthen Dr. Worrall was asked to holdthe layered pack. Again there wasthe ectoplasm effect--on all vespieces of lm.

When other persons in thelab held the lm under the sameconditions, some indications of anenergy affecting the lm were seenbut the results were not nearly sospectacular as those obtained by thehealer, Even so, Dr. Mossconsideredthese results signicant.

We dont know what we arelooking at in these pictures but thismay be one of the rst examples incurrent research in which we canget on lm an energy that peopleare emanating, she said.

She explained that she usesthe word current because Baron

von Reichenbach and others in thepast noted similar photographiceffects, but no one believed themor paid any attention to them.

Dr. Worrall also succeeded inproducing phantom leaf effectson lm, using Kirlian photography.Where a part of a leaf had been cutaway, after the healer treated it

little blue bumps appeared tooutline the phantom or severedpart of the leaf.

This phantom leaf effecthas been previously reported byRussian researchers using Kirlianphotography. They named themysterious force bioplasma andcalled the strange pattern of thecut-away portion of the leaf itsbioplasma body.

We call it an energy body, said Dr. Moss. We would sayperhaps that the leaf has, as inacupuncture, an energy system thatis still photographable when thephysical leaf has been cut away.

The UCLA research teamworked two years and tookthousands of pictures before beingable to lm the etheric or energybody of a cut leaf. They saw on thesevered side of the leaf uky littlelines and tiny balls of light thatwere similar to what the Russianshad seen. As the work progressedthese developed into visible patterns,as if the ghost of the severedportion of the leaf were still there. I want to make the point

very strongly that other laboratoriesall over the world are replicating thiswork, Dr. Moss said.

Another pioneeringdevelopment in the phantom leafresearch (apparently not previouslyreported by Simeon Kirlian and hislate wife Valentina in Russia) wasdisclosed by Dr. Moss. For somereason, in June, July and August1974 Kirlian photographs ofphantom or energy bodiesdiminished until the images failedentirely. The mystery apparentlywas solved when it was hypothesized

that the pattern shows up best in thespring when the leaf is coming intomaturity and is being molded by thematrix of the energy body, whereasby summer it has reached maturity.Gradually in the normal course theleaf begins to die and ordinarilywould fall from the tree and witheraway. Perhaps the energy bodywould be the rst to go, leavingfainter and fainter images on theradiation photographs until theydisappear entirely. In the spring of1975 new severed leaves againshowed the familiar energy patterns,

The idea that all living matter issupported by an etheric nonphysicalmatrix or mold called the ethericbody is almost as old as man. Dr.Moss referred to numerousexperiments that seem to conrmthe belief that this is true of animalforms as well as plants. She

described the work of SouthAmerican scientists whophotographed the auras ofcaterpillars with radiationequipment. Color pictures wereobtained showing gorgeousyellow, white and other coloredemanations, but when thecaterpillars were anesthetized thecolors faded away until the larvadied. This is consistent with thelong-held tradition of many peoplethat the etheric or astral body(Egyptians called it the ka:) departsfrom the physical body at death. And presumably this is the same asthe etheric double involved inspontaneous and experimental out-of-the-body experiences.

What of the controversy overthe reliability of the Kirlian methodas a research tool?

Numerous critics contendthat most of the effects are electricaland photographic artifacts which inno way substantiate the concept ofan aura or energy body and that thephotos are unreliable because of themany variables involved--differencesin apparatus, humidity, temperature,

variations in nger pressure andmany other factors that are noteasily controlled.

    Dr. Moss said, In other

laboratories in this country, in SouthAmerica and in Europe, experimenters workingindependently are repeating ourexperiments and are obtaining thesame sort of results that theRussians did.

This does not mean that thephotographic patterns, the coronasand emanations are always thesame, she pointed out, but ratherthat different conditions. However, she feels signicant conclusions canbe reached on the basis of the

experiments as a whole--forexample, the replication ofphantom leaf radiation imagesand the apparent picturing ofhealing energies, whether or notcoronas or auras are consistentlythe same.

One of the leading critics of

extravagant claims for the Kirliantechnique has been Prof. William A.Tiller, Stanford University physicist. However, it was learned that hemade a new preliminary report tothe foundation somewhat amendinghis previous reviews on Kirlianphotography. In part this reportread:

The contact photographytechnique was studied with

controlled nger spacing, moisturecontrol, etc., to see how the resultswould compare with the earliertransparent electrode studies. Theresults showed the same features asfound earlier; i.e., the pictures were

very reproducible, the nger spacingwas critical in the obtaining of aparticular and the non-blue colorscame from discharges occurring onthe back side of the lm.

These results stronglysuggested that Kirlian photogra- phy had negligible utility for theobtaining of reliable and convincingdata concerning altered energy orconsciousness states in livingsystems. This made the principalinvestigator (Dr. Tiller) veryunhappy.

Recently, the picture haschanged. The principal investigatornow begins to see a mechanism

whereby both his data and that of

Meanwhile, the whole eld ofpsycho-energetics is widening onmany fronts. Research is beginningto show that energies seemingly

projected by the so-called mind- benders like Uri Geller actuallycan change the molecular structureof metals as well as affect laboratoryinstruments-- compass andmagnetometers, for instance.

In London Uri proved inProf. John Taylors laboratory atKings College that he can activate aGeiger counter with the energyproduced by his will. (It indicated an

emission 500 times greater thannormal.) Among many otherspectacular experiments, hebuckled an aluminum disc insidea plastic container.

Professor Taylor reported, Iheld my hands between his and thecontainer to prevent any possibilityof his directly manipulating thedisc.

Uri also used his power tobend an aluminum strip enclosed ina wire mesh container, to break intoseveral pieces a small crystal oflithium uoride while it remainedin a plastic container and to bend asmall iron rod sealed in a perspextube.

Dr. Taylor originally metGeller on a British television showon which he was to have been thehatcher man debunking thephenomena.

Here was I, Taylor wrote later, a trainedphysicist,a researcher for the past 20 yearsinto the mysteries of matter and the mind, witnessing something that I knew I could notexplain to myself--let alone to those millionsof observers.

In Los Angeles Dr. Moss and her staffobserved what Professor Taylor called theGeller effect and recorded Uris mysterious

power on lm with Kirlian equipment. Theresulting pictures seem to indicate that he cantransmit his mental energy to a metal objectso that its corona appears almost to pulsatewith energy, as contrasted with the usualstatic discharges observed from inanimateobjects. Where is it all leading? Is psychicphenomena nally emerging from themumbo jumbo of dark age superstitionsinto the light of scientic inquiry, with hard-

core techniques in use to examine the

phenomena? Is the subject of bio-energeticsto be the new frontier of science? Conceivably in time scientists willunderstand more about the psychic energy ofthe seance room, the paraelectricitypostulated by Ambrose Worrall and Dr.Miller, the ectoplasm of Olga Worrall, thepsychokinetic force that can move and distort

objects without physical contact (as inpoltergeist manifestations and the Gellereffect) and the apportation of materials overconsiderable distance. Telepathy, the transmission ofthought from person to person, also may yieldto the tools of physical science. SomeRussians think that electromagnetic radiationis involved, although metaphysicians generallyinsist it is a manifestation of different degreesof consciousness. The various reports seem to indicate that thedivision between physics and metaphysics isnarrowing and the universal energy spokenof by philosophers may be subject to rationalexamination.
