Science at Beckman High School
Welcome!Your student’s pathway to
BHS Science Success
Kristen Hammer,BHS Science Department Chair
*If you would like a copy of this presentation please visit the
Beckman website under counseling and presentations
Why is science at BHS unique?
• It is not one path for success in science• Students can flow in and out of leveled
courses each year• As soon as their Life and Physical
graduation requirements are met there is more freedom in choice
• We offer the only district Biomedical STEM program
• We offer a great variety of course selections
TUSD Graduation Requirements
• 3 years of science in the Tustin Unified–One must be a life (biology, etc.), physical (chemistry, physics, earth science, etc.), and then an other (any science offering)
CSU/UC Requirements• Two years (three years
recommended) of laboratory science (D course) in two of these three foundational subjects: biology, chemistry and physics. • Many UC “D Lab Science” college
preparatory sciences to choose from to meet the needs of ALL levels of our students• Website for A-G requirements: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/a-g-requirements/
Our Course Offerings• UC “D” Lab Science and Elective “G”
Courses:– Biology CP, Biology Honors, and Biology
AP– Chemistry, Chemistry Honors,
Chemistry AP– Physics CP, Physics 1 AP, Physics M - AP– Environmental Science AP– Forensics Science– Oceanography– Earth Science– STEM Courses (Project Lead The Way)• Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, and Introduction to Engineering
Available Freshman Science Courses(with teacher recommendation)
•Earth Science•Biology CP•Biology Honors
So how do I know if my student is ready for honors science as a
freshman?• Please listen to the recommendation of their 8th
grade science teacher• If they feel overwhelmed please consider
changing in the first two weeks of school• Should be very strong test takers, independent
learners, and critical thinkers, strong readers and writers
• Large skill difference between middle and high school honors science
(remember they last took life science in 7th grade)
PLTW STEM CoursesPrinciples of Biomedical Science –
body, health, and medicineHuman Body Systems – anatomyIntroduction to Engineering – falls
under math and new for BHS next year
Who should take a STEM Class?Must have an interest in the field or else
they will not enjoy the classesLessons are self directed, with minimal
initial instruction from the teacher. Answers are not directly given, instead we require students to form conclusions based on observations, similar to how doctors form a diagnosis based on symptoms
Career journals with every unit expose students to possible careers. Students are presented with a few careers relating to the unit and they research the education required, the typical responsibilities, and the pay.
STEM Labs• Students follow written
procedures to complete hands-on labs
• Labs include taking cardiovascular health tests like EKG’s, using microscopes to compare cell types, building models of molecules, completing online activities, creating presentations, making models of the anatomy, diagnosing a case study patient, gel electrophoresis and other biotechnology techniques, etc.
Available Sophomore Science Courses(Based on performance of freshman
year and with teacher recommendation)
Earth Science students◦Biology◦Oceanography◦Honors Biology◦STEM
Biology CP students◦Chemistry◦Honors Chemistry◦Oceanography◦STEM
Honors Biology students◦Oceanography◦Chemistry◦Honors Chemistry◦STEM
** If room in their schedule can have another science as
an elective
Possible Junior Courses
• Oceanography• STEM• Chemistry (CP, H, AP)• Physics (CP or AP)• Biology AP• Forensics• Environmental Science AP
Possible Senior Courses
• Oceanography• STEM• Chemistry (CP, H, AP)• Physics (CP or AP)• Biology AP• Forensics• Environmental Science AP
Our Biggest Recommendation
• Take 4+ years to make yourself marketable
• Many students going into science majors in college will take more than one science in a year
• When students sign-up for AP classes they should check with universities of interest to see if AP credit is taken for credit or not, especially privates

What will set your student apart from all other applicants?
• Science Olympiad – on campus club• Robotics/Engineering classes on campus• Volunteer, intern, or do an ROP class in a field of interest• COSMOS program through the UC system• University of Michigan math science program• MIT Summer Engineering Program• UCI Summer Pre-Med Program• American Cancer Society Fellowships• Ocean institute internship program

Future Course Offering at BHS
• We are starting an Athletic Training Pathway in collaboration with IVC offering a 2 semester, 2 course offering in athletic training.
• 1st semester will be IVC course # KNES 85 – Intro to Athletic Training
• 2nd semester will be IVC course # KNEW 212 – Sports Medicine Internship
Thank you for coming are there any questions?
