Student Resource Scheme 2020 Payments
All Student resource scheme fees and subject fees are overdue unless you have a payment agreement in place. Finance Debtor Statements and a 1st Notice letter following up on these outstanding payments have been sent out. Please make payments to fulfil your obligations of participation in the Student Resource Scheme. Please pay these fees as soon as possible. BPOINT is the preferred method of payment to the school or see the end of our newsletter for further banking details. You will need to use your Customer Reference Number CRN shown at the bottom of your statement and invoice number for each amount owing. On Thursday the 20th of August, Ayden Geddes, Ashton Degnian, Carlos Altuve Rangel, Ahmed Mubeen, Torsten Dugdell and
myself travelled to Cairns State High School for the FNQ Interschool Chess
Championships, hosted by Gardiner Chess. Our team, with very limited practice
and experience, performed very well, coming 4th out of 12 teams from across the
region. Out of 43 competitors, Torsten Dugdell placed 38th, Ashton Degnian placed
36th, Carlos Altuve Rangel placed 16th, Ahmed Mubeen placed 14th, Ayden Geddes
placed 10th, and after losing the playoff game for second, I placed 4th. Our team
had the opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the state,
speak with some of the most knowledgeable coaches in Australia, and further our own abilities in a fun, yet focused
environment. Gardiner Chess consistently run some of the best tournaments in Australia, and as someone who has
participated in these tournaments before, I would encourage anyone to learn the game and get involved. We would like to
thank Ms Rowena Draper and the school for all their support. by Justin Kattenburg
Sports Welcome to the downhill slope of term 3.
With the rebooting of sport this term, we have seen many students taking place at a regional and district level in hockey, netball, basketball, softball and cricket. Congratulations to all students for following the correct process by obtaining, completing and submitting all nomination forms, turning up to trials and training, following and obeying the new restrictions in place due to COVID and showing wonderful sportsman/womanship at all times - you make me proud to be the Sports Coordinator at Atherton High. Thank you, also to the parents and guardians who sign the forms, drive students to and from trials and training, (even when, because of Covid restrictions, not being allowed to support and watch). Finally the added chore of having to wash all the smelly clothes.
Imagine waking up on a Sunday morning, putting on a dress and running a half marathon - a half marathon for those wanting to know is 21.1 kilometres. That's what Jamieson Herring, year 12, did on Sunday, 12 July. Jamieson participated in the Dynamic Running Festival at Redlynch College where funds were raised for abuse against women. Competitors wore dresses to help support women's rights. Jamieson achieved a personal best time of 1:37:41 which placed him fifth overall , this was first in his age group. Jamieson was running as part of the local Tablelands running club 'Red Earth Running' which saw 15 club members compete. This included Mrs Hampton, Ms Campbell and Miss McGuigan from the English/Humanities Department who participated in the half marathon. Hub Teacher, Mrs Lydeamore was placed third in the 10 kilometre run. Well done everyone on a fantastic effort for a great cause. If running is something that you are interested in taking up, please feel free to contact Red Earth Running via their website - www.redearthrunning.com.au for registration details and upcoming events.

Saturday, August 1st saw the criterium event which was a 1 kilometre circuit, around the Mareeba Mako Track (Go-Kart Track) where cyclist rode around for 45 minutes and, after that, completed 3 laps at a faster pace. The road race and time trial were held on Sunday, 2 August. The 60 kilometre road race for B Graders, saw cyclist head out of Mareeba along Chewko Road, complete 4 laps of the Narcotic Creek Road Circuit and then head back to Mareeba. Alisha competed in this grade alongside the men. The time trial is a 10 kilometre course out and back along Chewko Road where competitors started at 1 minute intervals to record as fast as possible time. After finishing in the top 10 within each event, Alisha was extremely happy with her efforts and is getting stronger in each race she competes in.
