    Distinguished doctoral students Renato Serrano and Misael Barraza will perform in

    memory of local guitarist Steve Schulman, who was one of the founders of the Tucson

    Guitar Society and a great friend of the UA Bolton Guitar Studies program. Renato has

    been awarded top prizes in more than ten international competitions, including first prize

    in the Andrs Segovia Guitar Competition. Misael has won numerous international

    competitions including the David Russell Bach Prize, the Indiana International Guitar

    Competition and the Montreal International Guitar Competition.

    Steve Schulman (1949-2013)

    Music had been integral part of Steves life since he was a child. Born in Tucson, Stevestarted plaing guitar at the age of !". B the time he was a #unior at Rincon $igh

    School, he was plaing in bands. Steve continued to pla in bands or solo to pa his wa

    through college. $e graduated the %niversit of Ari&ona in !'() with a degree ineducation and later returned to the %ofA to earn a masters degree in *ducation and

    Steves growing interest in education did not overshadow his want to share his love of

    music, especiall the guitar. $is talents in both areas became his passions along with hisfamil and good food and wine. These trul defined him. Steve was given the gift of

    music and in turn he gave that gift to countless students he taught and oung people he

    mentored. Steve taught for more than + ears in the Tucson %nified School -istrictT%S-/, reaching children when he thought the were most receptive to learning. Steve

    was a member of the first gifted education teaching team for elementar students. $e also

    wor0ed as a music resource teacher and as a member of the T%S- Arts Team.Steve was a highl accomplished classical and flamenco guitarist and one of the founders

    of the Tucson 1uitar Societ. $is service as a member of the % of A 2ollege of Fine Arts

    School of Music Advisor Board was important to him in order to provide more

    opportunities for gifted student musicians. Steve continued to pla in local bandsthroughout his life in a variet genres, from the Temple *manu3*l Avanim Roc0 Band

    which put traditional 4ewish liturgical music to roc0 and roll themes to countr western.

    After retiring from T%S-, Steve wor0ed at The Fol0 Shop, sometimes selling a guitar b

    giving free lessons. $e #ust couldnt stop teaching or plaing.

    Renato Serrano

    Renato Serrano is one of the most outstanding 2hilean guitarist of his generation. $e has

    been awarded with top pri&es in more than ten international guitar competitions,

    including the first pri&e in the Andr5s Segovia 1uitar 2ompetition in 6a $erradura,1ranada, Spain, which was founded b Maestro Segovia himself. Mr. Serrano has

    performed concerts in more than twelve countries in *urope and South and 7orth

    America, as solo performer, chamber musician and soloist with orchestra, having been

    featured in several festivals such as 4os5 Tom8s 1uitar Festival in 9etrer, Spain, Tampere1uitar Festival in Tampere, Finland, and Tallinn 1uitar Festival in Tallinn, *stonia. Mr

    Serrano holds a Master degree from the %niversit of Ari&ona, where he is currentl

    finishing his -octor of Musical Arts degree, while serving as teaching assistant in theBolton 1uitar Studio.

    Misael Barraza Daz

    Misael Barra&a -:a& is one of the most talented me;ican guitarists of his generation.

    $e graduated ?dette, $op0inson Smith, Fabio @anon, Roberto

    Aussell and Shin =shi Fu0uda. As of -ecember )"!, Misael holds both a Masters degree

    from the Master 1uitarra Alicante Spain/ and a second Master?s degree from the%niversit of Ari&ona %.S./. Misael was presented as the guest guitarist in the

    Mr. Barra&a has been awarded first place at numerous international guitar competitions.
