Principal’s Message

Issue 50 / July 2017

The eventful one-week March holidays that I spent with some of my teachers and students did much to reaffirm my belief in the importance of sculpting new experiences for my school.

During that one week, I joined forces with four teachers (Mdm Pauline Cheong, Mr Fauzy Juffrey Mohamed, Mr Goh Shu Rong, Mrs Lim-Tan Su Xuan) to lead a group of 28 students to Xi’an (西安), China, for an exchange programme. I marked out this overseas trip as one of my most enjoyable ones in recent years. This enjoyment was not, however, brought about from seeing the many changes in the city. Instead, it is the up-close and personal interaction I had with the teachers and students that made this trip most memorable for me. It is also one in which I found myself learning the most.

I appreciate having the opportunity to know and interact with a delightful spectrum of students during the trip: from the thoughtful, dependable and unassuming ones like Megan, Jace and Zelene to the exuberant, chatty and playful ones like Kai Xin, Zahra and Denise, and the social and jovial ones like Areej, Yu Kai and Jia Hao. I am proud to note that they not only knew when and how to be well-behaved, but that they also rose to the occasion admirably to face challenges in distant land. For instance, they stood to the test of overcoming the initial discomfort of staying with an unfamiliar host on the very first day of their arrival; they also bravely took the local food which they were previously unaccustomed to throughout their stay; they remained calm and polite to the host at all times and demonstrated great willingness

to accept any situation thrust upon them. The fact that they neither panicked nor cried throughout their stay also signifies how steady these students are. I am confident the unique experience will leave a deep impression on these students, thereby helping them learn better in the future because all the learning they gained were felt at the heart. For example, now that they have experienced first-hand how a lack of fluency in the language used can affect one’s confidence when expressing themselves, I believe they will henceforth view the learning of languages with a new pair of eyes.

Undeniably, their ability to cope in a new environment, and the success of the trip itself, owed in great part to these four teacher chaperons who not only constantly reminded them of their safety and responsibility, but also relished spending fun times with them. An experience like this is precious to our teachers too because it affords them a different opportunity to see another side of our students, and thereby understand them better.

And herein lies the importance of sculpting new experiences in Northland. It is through new experiences that our students can further endeavour to construct meaning of what they learn; to build upon what they learn; to live by what they learn; and to reflect on how they learn. As a sculptor of new experiences, Northland takes the task with great earnestness and purposefulness. Our Northland experiences are always meaningfully planned; suitably diverse and most of all, deliberately aligned to teaching and learning. They are, in fact, all calculated to add to our students’ joy in learning here in Northland!

For the period spanning three months since the beginning of this year, the School Athletics Team had emerged victorious in many Inter-Primary Schools Track and Field competitions at national level. Our athletes managed to win more than 50 trophies and medals with 10 Divisional Championship Titles in total from individual and relay events in the Annual Akira-Swift Track and Field Championship, national level Cross Country Championship for primary school category, Singapore Sports School Invitational Meet, Singapore Athletics Association Primary School Relays and the 58th National Inter-School Track and Field Championship. Despite the intense competition, our athletes have brought tremendous glory to our school in many major National Schools competitions. Our athletes have exemplified resilience and determination in all their races. Our athletes’ talents were developed through specialisation in different disciplines.

Two of our Primary 6 National Champion Team Relay runners shared their testimonies and reflections.

Our School AthleticsTeam : The year of Great Harvest!

“We did not have as many training sessions as the other schools but we were focused and went all out during training. We knew that if we wanted to win, each of us had to play our part since we depended on one another. We overcame our nervousness and did our best.”

Brendon Chow (6C)

“I have been in the School Athletics Team for 3 years, I definitely have gained a lot – whether experiences or friendship, they are all of utmost importance to me. Furthermore, the values I have picked up, along the way of my track and field journey would surely follow me through for many years to come. These values have taught me not only to overcome obstacles in life, but more importantly, the way I treat my teammates and opponents.”

National Story Challenge16 students signed up for the National Story Challenge workshop at the start of the term. With just a phrase given and a chair as the prop, the students learnt to tell story within five minutes. Initially some found it quite daunting. However, after going through a series of workshops, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves as their creative juices flowed through the stories they improvised.

From the workshops, 10 students were selected for the National Story Challenge Competition. The confidence level was boosted when some of them managed to clear the qualifying round. From a total of 72 teams, our students made it through the final 6 teams. Although they did not make it to the top three teams, they have certainly done Northland proud.

National Schools Individual Chess Championships 2017In the early morning of 21 March, our Northland Knights, under the stewardship of Knight Master Mr Chang Cheng Hwee, rode forth to the Our Tampines Hub battlefield to wage war over the next two days.

A record number of 1202 budding young knights participated in this year’s grand battle. The Northland Contingent which consists of 40 eager Northland Knights, took part in many gruelling battles and emerged victorious in many of those battles! We are proud to share with you, our spoils of war for this year!

Results:15 National Awards35 Zonal Awards

33 of our Northland Knights also qualified for the National Junior Squad with their immense performance during the battles. Of which, 23 of them qualified for the High Performance Intermediate Squad, including four who qualified for the prestigious High Performance Squad, an honour reserved for the very best performers!

The Northland Knights have done the school proud and have demonstrated the Chess Club’s motto of “Gracious in Victory, Dignified in Defeat” through their actions!

Glory in Silat!

After six consecutive months of training and hard work, Nurul Atiqah bte Redzwan from Primary 6C emerged as the gold medallist in the National Pencak Silat Championship held on 4 and 5 March 2017 at Tampines Sports Hub and the Silat UNJ Open Competiton held on 25 to 28 April at Jakarta.

Joining her in the competiton was Wan Muhammad Irfan Zufar bin Wan Muhammad Ashraf from Primary 6E who won the silver medal in the Silat UNJ Competition.

Juggling between studies and trainings was not an easy task for Atiqah and Irfan. They trained four times a week, each lasting for almost two hours. Atiqah and Irfan worked very hard to boost their endurance, strength, nimbleness and speed. Despite the arduous task, they managed to pull through and made Northland proud. Kudos to Atiqah and Irfan!

13th National Primary Schools Wushu Championship 2017Jayden Sng Jun Ming (P5G) from our Wushu CCA has done our school proud. He has clinched two awards during the competition. Despite the fierce competition, he came in 3rd in the Junior Boys Sword event and 4th in the Junior Boys Spear event. Chinese New Year Celebration at Northland Primary SchoolThe school celebrated Chinese New Year on 27 January 2017. It was a morning full of fun and rich in Chinese culture, with everyone looking their best in Chinese traditional costume.

During recess, the students were exposed to traditional Chinese culture such as Chinese Calligraphy and games namely the zodiac memory card game, orange stacking and chopstick games. The mini golf and Nerf gun booths were very popular among the students. A photo booth was also made available for students and teachers to have their pictures taken.

Highlight of the celebration was a concert with items presented by the Wushu and Chinese Dance Club members. A skit was performed by the Chinese Mother Tongue teachers, and everyone also enjoyed the mass singing session with the Principal and Vice Principals in the lead. The concert ended on a high note with the appearance of the God of Fortune and a lion dance performance!

We wish to thank the ChamPs and the parent volunteers, as well as the Chinese Mother Tongue teachers who had made the event an even more enjoyable one.

International Friendship Day

Total Defence Day 2017Total Defence Day (TDD) 2017 is commemorated on 15 February every year, to mark Singapore’s fall to the Japanese in 1942. TDD serves to remind our younger generation that their participation in Total Defence is important and everyone should play a part in defending our beloved nation.

To put Total Defence into action in our daily lives, Northlanders participated in the School Emergency Exercise in the morning, followed by TDD Assembly Skit. Special TDD Menu were sold during recess to enable

Northland commemorated International Friendship Day on Thursday, 13 April 2017. This year, the theme, “ASEAN 50” focuses on the strong friendship that Singapore has built with the regional countries over the years.

Through the assembly programme, “ASEAN Star Charity”, our students learnt to appreciate the uniqueness and diverse cultures in the ASEAN countries, namely Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar. Our students learnt that Singapore, being a member of ASEAN, is involved in rendering aid to other ASEAN countries in need.

Northlanders were engaged in hands-on activities to learn more about Tinikling, Philippines traditional dance and Loy Krathong, Thailand Festival of Lights.

Reading Fest 2017The Reading Fest aims to develop a reading culture in Northland. This year the Reading Fest was launched in Term 2 Week 8 with a host of activities lined up for the students. The P3 to P5 students participated in ‘A Story is a Doorway’ competition, turning one of their classroom doors into a cover page of the class’ favourite Roald Dahl’s book. The students took a gallery walk to admire the ‘door page’ done up so realistically, The best 3 classes of each level were awarded prizes.

P1 and P2 students had a Character Dress-up Day where students came dressed as their favourite character based on the genre “Fantasy”. The students were simply thrilled and excited when the reading mascot, Olaf appeared on stage and danced to the soundtrack. The best dressed student from each class was selected and they presented a short speech on the selected character. It was indeed heartening to see the students plucking their courage to speak before a large audience.

Several fringe activities were conducted for the students: • P3 & P4 Book Talk Airtime - by NPS Reading

Ambassadors• P5 & P6 Mannequin Challenge “I’m Going to Read A

Book Today”• Fantasy Reading Fest Corner - BFG ‘Dream Jars‘• P6 Dab Challenge - Recommend a Fantasy book to

Northlanders, strike a Dab Pose with the book, snap a photo and post it on MCOnline

• P1 & P2 Story Time in PACMRL• Golden Ticket Challenge - Students hunt for the

Golden Tickets and borrow a book from the library to claim a mystery gift.

We hope that through the fun and meaningful activities, the students have been motivated to read more books and experience joy in reading.

Project Work-cum Value-in Action 2017Our World, Our Future, Our Cause’

Autism Awareness Week 2017

To fulfil their commitment to VIA, P5 students poured their heart and soul into entertaining the elderly at Sunshine Welfare Action Mission, Sree Narayana Mission Home and Ling Kwang Home. The students danced and sang, strummed the guitar, played the drum, played games and chatted with the ‘Ah Kongs’ and ‘Ah Mahs’.

Back in school, the students worked on their Science Project Work. From the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) they learnt how to bring about a caring society through improved public housing, in particular, for the elderly.

Students used brainstorming tools such as IRIS and Dot Voting in an attempt to bring about innovative ideas to solve problems faced by today’s society. Students were taught such brainstorming tools to help them develop confidence and be better prepared for present day challenges as well as that of tomorrow.

2nd April is World Autism Awareness Day which Northland Primary School took an active part in, for the first time.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to make sense of the world and relate with others. Autism comes from the word ‘autos’, the Greek word for ‘self’.

Our first Autism Awareness Week was from 3rd to 7th April 2017. There were video-screenings, tools used to assist sensory stimulations, books for children to understand autism as well as pledges of their support!

P4 CCE CampJoy in learning is the way to go in our yearly two-day CCE Camp for Primary 4 students. The camp aims to emphasise the importance of Total Defence (CCE) and CLITE values, and most importantly, to foster camaraderie among students of different races. These objectives were achieved through engaging and fun activities.

One of the highlights of the camp was definitely the Concerned Northlander activity, where students learnt to prepare themselves in times of an emergency as a part

of Civil and Psychological Defence. Our students had first-hand experience in administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), kept a watchful eye on a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), learnt to handle weapons and tried out on the ‘leopard crawl’. It was indeed an experience for all of them!

For their meals, students learnt to relish food from the different ethnic groups. Next was a learning journey to the different places of worship in the Yishun neighbourhood and then on a beach-cleaning mission to help keep Singapore clean and to fulfil their commitment towards Kindness@Community.

The camp had provided the students opportunities to have fun, to learn and to explore what were new so as to ensure that they find joy in learning.

The atmosphere at Yishun Stadium on 10th March was simply electrifying with representatives from the 5 houses competing on races and tele-matches on our school 29th Annual Sports Day. Spectators were treated with the marvellous display of our students’ skills, speed, stamina, athletics talents and cohesive team spirit during the course of the competition.

The atmosphere was progressively built up with the intense competition picking up, culminating to the team relay, tele-match games and the ever popular grand finale, Staff-Parents race. With the provision of mass participation involving almost everyone from the 5 houses forming teams to take part in all 3 tele-match games for each level, it brought much widespread sense of satisfaction and exhilaration. With the presence of healthy and intense competitions, the mega sports event of the year is indeed an invaluable platform for enhancing character building traits with representatives pushing themselves to their limits.

P2 Peer Leaders Appointment Ceremony 2017On 7 March 2017, we welcomed a new batch of P2 Peer Leaders to our Student Leadership fraternity. The Peer Leaders were specially selected by teachers based on their leadership skills to better serve at school level. The roles and responsibilities of a Peer Leader include assisting teachers on duty to manage student movements and maintain discipline, as well as helping out during school events.

Graced by our Vice Principals, Ms Neo and Mr Ng, HOD of Character and Citizenship Education, Mdm Menhanah, the P2 Peer Leaders Appointment Ceremony rolled out with our Peer Leaders taking their stand on stage, reciting the Prefects Pledge, pledging their commitment and loyalty as student leaders to the school.

It was indeed a meaningful ceremony for all the Peer Leaders. We hope that through this opportunity, the

Prefects’ Investiture 2017“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams.

On Monday, 23 January, we witnessed a brilliant celebration of student leadership in school with the Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony. The Investiture Ceremony marked a significant beginning of the new academic year. It was an occasion where the young students’ leaders were all prepared to don the mantle of leadership and discharge the responsibilities entrusted upon them by the school.

Peer Leaders will grow in their capacity to serve and be an exemplary role model for their fellow schoolmates. Welcome on board, Peer Leaders!

This special formal event began with the entrance of the smart, sophisticated and well-dressed prefect body and mentors before a few words by Mr Tony Tan, our school principal and Jessie Willet, the newly appointed head prefect.

This year’s event marked the first time whereby parents of the prefects were invited to pin up the badges personally for their children. It was clearly evident that they treated the occasion with the proper decorum that it deserved as they stood there accepting the roles before their parents and peers. As staff, we had pride splashed across our faces and enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with our new student leaders and parents over refreshments following the ceremony. We wish them all the best.

29th School Anniversary CelebrationOur Progress Our PrideThe uplifting mood was evident throughout the day from the assembly and recess programmes, with a host of activities including video screening of Northland Primary’s past and present and the Staff-Students games during our 29th School Anniversary Celebration. The screenings of the interviews of staff and students triggered a sense

of nostalgia and pride with all present rejoicing at the transformation and progress our school has attained over the years from our humble beginnings. It was a great day of celebration with fond memories that would be etched in the minds and hearts of the Northland family.

Making Memories That Last18 Feb 2017 saw a group of 35 parents and their kids bonding over games that introduced as well as brought out the essence of the 5 love languages - words of affirmation, acts of service, physical touch, quality time and gifts.

Through the games and debrief conducted after each game, parents understood better what their child’s love language is, thus paving the way towards better communication between them. It was a morning well-spent at the Botanic Gardens!

Overture: Financial Success Starts Young

WeCare@North-West Service week

Students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) conducted a financial literacy programme for the WeCare students in 2016. The team, Overture, was piloted under Enactus NUS, a wing of a global non-profit organisation called Enactus. Earlier in March 2017, Overture returned to conduct a 4-session Phase 2 programme for the same students. The programme aims to educate the students about the value of money through a series of customised content sessions integrating basic financial knowledge lessons with hands-on activities.

On 7 January 2017, a group of 40 students, teachers and parents from Northland Primary School teamed up with students from Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School to participate in the WeCare@North-West Service Week. It is an annual festive distribution drive in which partners of the CDC pack and distribute the gift packs to needy families living in rented flats within the neighbourhood of the school.

Students learnt to analyse various scenarios and spending habits. They visited Chong Pang market to make purchases with a given budget. They learnt budgeting and decision-making in payments. Students were successful in keeping within budget. They also learnt to draw up their own budget based on their peers’ suggestions. Students were awarded prizes for their effort.

Aside from teaching and learning on how to budget, the mentors and students also had time to bond, establish a strong rapport and enjoy themselves like friends always do. We are certainly thankful for such a collaboration and the team looks forward to working with Northland Primary School once again!

First, the volunteers gathered at the void deck to pack the goodies. Upon the arrival of Guest-of-Honour, Er Dr Lee Bee Wah, and with her taking the lead, the volunteers worked in groups to distribute the festive packs to 100 families.

Northlanders felt it was a Saturday afternoon well-spent and it was well worth the effort to bring cheer to the needy.

Xi ‘an Cultural Immersion Programme 11 March 2017 to 16 March 2017Mr Tony Tan, our Principal, and four teachers, Mdm Pauline Cheong, Mdm Tan Su Xuan, Mr Goh Su Rong and Mr Mohamed Fauzy led a group of 28 students on an educational and cultural immersion programme to Xi’an, China. The aims of the internationalisation trip were to bring about an awareness of globalisation and an understanding of cross-cultural skills among students and to deepen students’ commitment to Singapore and to realize their root.

Students experienced a homestay programme in partnership with students from Kingfar School in Xi’an. Students were immersed in the local Chinese culture through hands-on activities such as calligraphy and traditional paper-cutting. The students were filled with awe during visits to historical sites such as the Great Mosque, the Ancient City Wall and the Terracotta Army Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many found the trip insightful and enriching. It is no wonder that these students are looking forward to playing hosts to their Chinese counterparts later in the year.

P1 Learning Journey to the Singapore Zoological Gardens

P6 CMT Learning Journey to Chinatown and Heritage Centre (Yuan Mao Guan)

The English and Mother Tongue Department organised a learning journey to Singapore Zoological Gardens on Tuesday, 28 February 2017 for all Primary 1 students.

The objective of the learning journey is to provide the students with an opportunity to learn and apply the languages within an authentic context.

It is hoped that through this experiential learning process, our students would gain new ideas for writing.

During the Chinese New Year period, the P6 students visited Chinatown with their Chinese Mother Tongue teachers.

They visited the Heritage Centre (Yuan Mao Guan). The Chinatown Heritage Centre houses a wealth of memories and untold stories of the past. It tells the stories of the original tenants at 50 Pagoda Street, from the tailor and his apprentices, to the Samsui women and the coolies.

Guided tours to the Thian Hock Keng Temple, Ann Siang Hill, Sago Street, Trengganu Street, Pagoda Street and Temple Street were also included. Explanations on the past and present of Chinatown, cuisine, costume, architecture and religion were conducted by the guides.

From this trip, our students learnt about the resilience of our ancestors and to appreciate what they have now. Students were encouraged to do collaborative learning by completing tasks in small groups.

This learning journey has certainly given them a pleasant memory of Chinatown and a better understanding of Singapore’s history.

This year is the first year the CMT students were given a chance to make use of iPads during their learning journey to answer questions related to the places they visited.

P5 Art-In-Transit Aesthetics Learning Journey 2017

P4 Aesthetics Learning Journey to Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) 2017

On 20 and 21 February 2017, the entire P5 cohort embarked on an art learning journey to view and learn about public art displayed along the SMRT Circle Line and North-East Line. It was quite a refreshing excursion for the students as they learnt that art can exist beyond a museum or gallery, and that there is such a wide range of materials and mediums that artists can tap on to create art. Two of the students’ favourites included Roy Zhang’s The Perfect Moment at the Stadium Station, which depicts enlarged images of men playing soccer, and Seck Yok Ying’s Hands Up for Hougang at the Hougang Station, which features a community wall comprising the handprints of 3000 locals and foreigners. The learning journey has surely taught our students to be on the lookout for more interesting public artworks during their train rides in future!

In the months of February, March and April, our P4 students visited STPI for their printmaking exhibitions and in-house workshops. Two exhibitions were held over the 3-month period. The first exhibition entitled We are the World – These are Our Stories by Amanda Heng featured 12 personal stories of 12 individuals. Combining the artist’s process-driven approach and modern printmaking techniques, art documenting snippets of the individuals’ lives were created and showcased. Sitting in a circle to pluck beansprouts while listening to the guide talk about Amanda Heng and her art prints was quite a surreal experience for our students! But it was thoroughly enjoyable.

The second exhibition entitled Exquisite Trust (Blindly Collective Collaborations) by 4 international artists, Carsten Höller, Tobias Rehberger, Anri Sala and Rirkrit Tiravanija featured screen prints of Singapore buildings, eye-catching typography-based screen prints, stunning composite palm line drawings and organic watercolour monoprints. Besides being exposed to the different artists, what the students enjoyed the most were the hands-on workshops on dry-point printing and stencil screen printing. Truly, nothing beats viewing the art exhibits up close and personal in an art museum or gallery!
