In our last issue of Firm Foundations, we asked the community for continued support of the Capital Campaign for St. Joseph’s new medical campus. We are on a mission to raise $15 Million locally to complement the $85 Million sponsored by our parent company, Catholic Health Initiatives. We are humbled by the response from individuals and businesses and are proud to report our progress:

• In the Fall 2013 issue of Firm Foundations, we had reported raising $5.6 Million in gifts and pledges.

• As of this printing, we have raised $10.5 Million in gifts and pledges!

So many individuals and companies have stepped up and, through their generous and timely gifts, showed that improving healthcare in southwestern North Dakota is an important value to their organization!

It is only through their dedication to quality healthcare—and the sacrifice and carefully-considered generosity of people who care—that we have made such incredible progress.

With our goal closer than ever and the new facility nearing completion, we say THANK YOU for your continued support of St. Joseph’s Hospital through your patronage, ideas, involvement, and financial assistance.

Sincerely,

Jodi Bosch Foundation Director St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center

ConocoPhillips announced in December 2013 the company will donate a total of $1 million over four years to the St. Joseph’s Hospital New Campus Project to support health care services for current and future residents in the community and surrounding area. Greg Ashdown, operations manager for the company’s Bakken area, presented the first of four $250,000 annual donations to Jodi Bosch, Director of Foundation and Communications for St. Joseph’s.

“Dickinson is the virtual epicenter of energy development activity in the Bakken,” said Ashdown. “This new facility will be a great addition to serve the people living in the area and working to grow the state’s energy economy.”

ConocoPhillips’ Lower 48 business unit has field offices in Dickinson, ND, Watford City, ND, Sidney, MT, and Billings, MT, with approximately 150 employees. The company is currently running 11 drilling rigs in the Bakken.

“The Bakken is an important development and growth area for ConocoPhillips,” Ashdown added. “Our support for this new medical facility is just one way to demonstrate to residents of Dickinson and all of North Dakota our commitment to the area.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital’s parent company Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, ND, have signed a nonbinding agreement to form a new affiliation. CHI and St. Alexius are pursuing the affiliation to build on their strengths in rural and faith-based care to better serve communities in the region through enhanced services and improved coordination of care. If a final agreement is reached, the creation of this new affiliation could occur by the end of the year.

“This partnership would ensure a viable, innovative, high-quality care option for residents in light of

health care reform and other changes in the region,” said Kevin Lofton, President and CEO of CHI.

Gary P. Miller, St. Alexius Medical Center President and CEO, said, “CHI and St. Alexius have a long-standing history of working together. Our organizations are guided by our mission to nurture the church’s healing ministry. We are pleased to pursue an opportunity with a provider who shares our commitment to meeting the Catholic health needs of our region as well as being an advocate for the most vulnerable members we serve.”

Construction UpdateNew construction is on-pace for a December 2014 opening. The grand opening date will be dependent on completion of the physical facility, as well as on the coordination and testing of all new equipment and computer systems required for patient care.

St. Joseph’s VP of Mission, Facilities & Support Services Dennis Cannon (left) consults with JE Dunn’s Marlin Svatos (right) about the progress of the new facility.

Hospital departments are eager to see their work spaces and are signing up for construction site tours this spring. Here, employees from Health Information Management (HIM) and Foundation Director Jodi Bosch look at blueprints as they tour the new hospital on March 20th.

General Contractor JE Dunn hosted a catered lunch inside the partially finished Medical Office Building for all contractors and their employees in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to the new hospital project.

Eagles Club Trustees Support Diabetes EducationThis spring, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation received $5000 from Dickinson’s Eagles Club Trustees for the purpose of diabetes education.

The local Eagles Club has given significant dollars to The Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa over the years. Kash Kremer said, “This is our way of giving back locally; we feel very strongly about Diabetes Education and Research.” While receiving the donation, Certified Diabetes Educator Sharon Olheiser, RN, stated, “This generous donation from the Eagles Club will help us continue to provide diabetes medications and supplies for discharged patients that do not have the funds to purchase them. As our population grows, we are seeing an increased need for this service. Providing discharged patients with the basics to manage their diabetes keeps them well and improves their quality of life.”

On April 1st, St. Joseph’s Hospital began using a new computerized patient health record. Instead of paper charts, each patient now has an electronic computer chart. The new system is designed to improve patient safety and provide caregivers with more complete, timely information, all in an effort to provide a better patient experience. In addition, St. Joseph’s clinics began using a new computerized scheduling, registration and billing system April 1. President Reed Reyman notes, “So that each patient’s chart can be updated, we are asking those who come in for clinic appointments to bring their ID (driver’s license) and insurance card, and allow 15 minutes for the new registration process.” “These are exciting times for all of us at St. Joe’s,” says Tom Arnold, MD. “The training that my colleagues and I have undergone has prepared us well. We are eager to put into place this new system, always with the focus being able to improve the care we provide to the many people we serve.” Healthcare facilities all across the country are making similar electronic records transitions. As mandated in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, all public and private healthcare providers and other eligible professionals must now have adopted and demonstrated “meaningful use” of electronic medical records in order to maintain their existing Medicaid and Medicare

reimbursement levels. “Meaningful use” of EHR, as defined by HealthIT.gov, consists of using digital medical and health records to achieve the following:• Improve quality, safety, efficiency, and reduce health

disparities• Engage patients and family• Improve care coordination, and population and

public health• Maintain privacy and security of patient health

Mary Walser, CNA in the Radiology Department, has been working at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 45 years. She has seen many changes in the technology used for patient imaging as well as maintaining patient files. In 2009, St. Joseph’s radiology department transitioned to digital-only imaging, eliminating the need for x-ray film and the large file folders needed to hold them. Around her daily duties, Mary has taken on the project of sorting through rows and rows of old patient x-rays stored at St. Joseph’s. Most of these files will not be taken to the new hospital facility this fall, yet they need to be sorted through and disposed of properly. Once Mary has identified what has to be discarded, she empties the films out of the envelopes and into barrels for recycling. She then piles up the envelopes and takes them for shredding.

The process has taken about 4 months and is almost complete. Always with a smile, Mary is seen taking several trips a week to the shredding room with old folders. Dorothy Meduna, Director of Radiology, says of Mary’s project, “The envelopes get to be a lot of heavy lifting in and out of the file. This is literally a ‘dirty job’ and we are fortunate that she does this willingly!”

Harvest Home is a temporary residential facility that serves as a home-away-from-home for patients and families who are receiving medical care at local hospital, clinics, treatment centers and physician offices. It was established as an affordable and comfortable place to stay for families from out of town visiting their loved ones in the hospital, as well as for patients coming to Dickinson for an outpatient procedure that might require them to report for their procedure very early in the morning. The facility is open to patients and families receiving care at any area treatment center, not just at St. Joseph’s.

The Harvest Home is owned by the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and is operated by a host of staff and volunteers. Food for guests of Harvest Home is often generously donated by St. John’s Lutheran Church of Dickinson. Guests may use the home for laundry, showers, or a place to relax at no charge. A

$15.00 donation is requested for overnight stays, and donations for daytime only use are always welcome. The Harvest Home has three rooms which are available on a first come, first served basis. Request for rooms are made by your doctor, social worker, or hospital employees by calling Admitting at 701-456-4000, or 701-456-4772.

On average, more than 100 people stay at the Harvest Home each year. The home will continue to operate from its current location just off Sims in Dickinson after the hospital moves to its new location in West Dickinson.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Betty FrankBetty Frank has a history at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was born here at St. Joseph’s, and both she and her mother worked in the hospital’s dietary department for several years. When Betty retired about ten years ago, she soon picked up volunteer shifts at the hospital. She is a fixture at the east entrance welcome desk, where she has formed many friendships, especially with the kidney dialysis patients and their families. “The hospital, it’s very important to me.”

Along with serving St. Joseph’s as an employee and a volunteer, Betty has also made donations to the hospital foundation. Her most recent gift to the New Hospital Capital Campaign was carefully thought out. “A new hospital – it’s very much needed,” Betty explains. “I have come here for many medical procedures, and I know that things are busier than ever. We need that new facility to keep up with the needs of the community.”

Along with supporting the hospital financially, Betty believes in taking advantage of the healthcare available right here at St. Joseph’s. In recent years, she has needed to make more trips to the doctor. “Anytime I can have something done at the hospital in Dickinson, I do it! It’s such a hassle to have to travel to Bismarck, especially in the winter, so I request

my doctor send me to St. Joseph’s for procedures whenever possible.” Betty has also appreciated the collaboration between St. Joseph’s and other facilities that brings travelling specialists here to Dickinson.

When asked how others can help support St. Joseph’s hospital, Betty states, “A hospital is such an important part of your community. If you were ever going to consider a gift, now is the time to do it as this new facility is underway.” Whether supporting St. Joseph’s Hospital financially or through her patronage, she puts it simply: “Why wouldn’t you want to support your own hospital?”

What is the “Every Bushel Counts” Program?St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, in cooperation with Southwest Grain, has created an ongoing program called Every Bushel Counts. Area elevators are now able to facilitate your tax deductible donation of bushels to the Foundation, which will directly benefit St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center.

Simply tell your grain buying agent you would like to give a pre-determined amount of bushels to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. You will be given a card to fill out asking for your contact information and confirming the number of bushels you wish to donate.

When your grain is sold, the value of your grain will be donated to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation in your name.
