4 Year Plans and Graduation The New Mexico State Education Law (HB 305) requires that every New Mexico high school students must complete a four-year plan and a “Next Step Plan. Four-year plans begin at the end of the eighth grade as students are registering for the ninth grade. The plan layouts the courses that the student plans to take over the next four years to reach graduation requirements and college entrance requirements, if applicable. There are two publications that will assist students in creating their four-year plan. The first publication is the Deming Public Schools 4-Year Planbook. This book explains graduation requirements and provides a course catalog with course title, description, and pre-requisites. The second publication is the Deming Public Schools Career Pathway Atlas, Career Pathway Maps. The goal of the Deming Public Schools’ Career Pathway Maps is to help students plan their high school course selections so they are ready to enter the workforce or go to a college of their choice upon graduation. The Career Pathway Maps assist students in charting a four (4) year plan for successful completion of high school with their personal goals in mind. The Career Pathway Maps were created for each of nine Career Clusters with two post-secondary levels. The Career Clusters are:

• Fine Arts • Business • Communication • Engineering • Health • Human Services • Marketing • Science • Technology

The post-secondary levels are: • High school diploma or technical college or associate degree • 4-yr college or university with a bachelor degree or higher.

The “Next Steps Plan” uses the student’s 4-year plan, the 4-Year Planbook, and goal setting to provide a structure for high school students to think ahead through conscientious planning about their future. It is revisited and updated each year. The mandated process for completing this form includes the involvement of many stakeholders of student success: the student, the student’s parents or guardian, and the school counselor or other school official charged with coursework planning. In the Next Step Plan, a student describes his/her goals related to long-term career, academic, extra-curricular post-secondary, and personal/social interest.

The focus for all of these required activities is to help the student prepare for graduation and a successful life after graduation. To assist you in preparing for high school graduation, below are the graduation requirements: Department Course Requirements Class of 2009 &
