School Newsletter Term 4 Week 7 2018 Welcome to this edition of our school newsletter. The end of the year is drawing close, and there are many activities and events happening. One of our most special events is our Community Concert, where we invite people from a number of local rest homes and hospitals to visit our school, be entertained by our pupils, and enjoy a light afternoon tea. It is heart warming to see our pupils take such good care of our visitors. Also this week we held our Whānau Hui. Thank you to all who attended and watched our Kapa Haka group perform they were really good, and started the evening off in style. It was good to talk with the parents who attended and who gave us such positive feedback. Tomorrow we hold our last School Disco. Can I ask parents and caregivers to be sure to drop children at the hall door at 7:00pm, and to be back to collect them by 9:00pm. Your support by being on time will be much appreciated. Next week we will be sending home our last newsletter for the year slightly out of sequence. We will make sure we have details of the last week in that publication so please keep an eye out for it. In brief, Year 8 pupils will be invited to attend their farewell assembly on Wednesday 12 December at 7:00pm, along with their parents or caregivers. The year will finish for Year 8 at the conclusion of the assembly. Year 7 pupils will be dismissed around 12:15pm on Thursday 13 December after their leaving assembly. The end of the year can be a busy time. It is important that children realise school rules and expectations do not change just because it is the end of the year. Please reinforce this with your child or children. We also ask children not to sign their, or others, school uniform. If your child so wishes, they may bring a tee-shirt from home on their last day and their friends can sign that. Again, thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing many of you over the coming days. Best wishes Phil Tappenden Disco Friday 30 November 7:00pm 9:00pm At Kirkwood’s School Hall Cost: $5 per ticket (free drink with entry) Available for purchase on the night will be Lollies $1 and Chocolate $2

Pupil’s Achievements A big congratulations to Emanuela for competing at the Christchurch Intermediate Schools Speech Competition last week. She gave a great speech and represented Kirkwood very well.

Athletics Sports On Friday 23 November, we took 55 pupils to the CAIMS (Canterbury Association at Intermediate & Middle Schooling) Athletics Sports. This was held at the brand new Nga Puni Wai sports complex. The new track and facilities are just wonderful. The pupils all performed extremely well, especially in some very cold and wet conditions. Many of the pupils and relay teams made it through to their final. This is a major achievement, and places them in the top 8 in Canterbury. Finishing on the podium in third place was:

Kayla S - Year 8 Girls’ Discus

Sofia M - 200m Open Girls’.

A massive congratulations to Kayla and Sofia. Many thanks must go to Miss Timblick and Rachel Simons, for helping with many coaching sessions in the build up to the event.

Ginger Bread Houses A small group of Year 8’s from Room 3 made gingerbread houses with one of our Food Technology teachers Mrs Anderson.
