Gain hands-on teaching experience and be part of a school from day one.

As well as offering our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) route, the university is proud to be working in close partnership with a number of local schools to deliver School Direct programmes.

School Direct offers a great opportunity for schools to inform initial teacher training (ITT) to recruit the best potential teachers into the sector. Host schools are fully involved in the selection of their students and work closely with the university to design the programme and monitor and evaluate the provision.

Building on the expertise within the PGCE programme you will learn on the job and benefit from being part of the school right from your first day, as well as having the support of the university’s facilities and resources. There are two different routes you can apply for when studying via School Direct: salaried and non-salaried.

School Direct: Non-salaried

This route is open to all graduates with 2.2 (Hons) degree or above (or equivalent) and leads to both PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).The training programme is for one academic year full-time.

You will benefit from training provided by both the host school and university staff, following an agreed syllabus which includes professional, pedagogical and subject development. This will prepare you for your first teaching practice.

The programme is funded by tuition fees paid directly by the trainee, but you will be eligible for a standard support package which includes training bursaries, tuition fee loans and scholarships where applicable.

School Direct: Salaried

The salaried route is employment based and aimed for candidates looking for a career change. You will normally need a 2.1 (Hons) degree or above and three or more years career experience. For most applicants, this will have normally been gained since leaving university and doesn’t have to be in education, however you will need to demonstrate a good understanding of learning and teaching in the primary years.

This route leads to QTS status and will normally be for ten months. You will be employed directly by the school and the programme will enable you to train and work in a paid teaching role. A highly competitive route, this option enables you to earn a salary as an unqualified teacher in your host school.

Entry Requirements

• you will need at least a 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent preferably in a subject that is relevant to the primary school curriculum.

• you will need a minimum grade C in English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject at GCSE.

• you will need to be able to demonstrate evidence of successful experience in a primary classroom setting (a minimum of ten full days is advised).

• successful completion of the literacy and numeracy professional skills test.

• in addition to the above successful applicants will be required to complete two weeks of school experience in a primary school before commencing the PGCE course.

• for the salaried route you will need at least a 2.1 Honours degree and three or more years career experience.

Benefit from our partnershipsWorking closely with host schools, you will benefit from expertise and resources from both the school and university. The close partnerships means we work together to monitor and evaluate your files of evidence throughout the programme.

Earn a salary while you train The salaried route enables you to get paid as an unqualified teacher while you train for your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) award. Salary is circa £16,000 (outside London rates). This is a highly competitive route and trainees are carefully chosen.
