C Waller, Principal
Term 2 Issue 4 26 May 2017
Monday 29 May is Day 4
Thank you to Ant Ford from Hands Up who presented Acer laptops and running shoes to some of our top performing sports students.
We had some good results last week with the Netball girls beating Rangitoto, the 1st XV rugby winning 8 – 0 against Massey and the girls basketball team has won 2 out of its first 3 games in the top Auckland league.
For a school of our size to be competitive in a wide range of sports is a great reflection on the school, community and the ability and dedication of our students, staff and coaches.
The school Jazz groups have been marvellous performing in our assemblies this week and I encourage you to come to the Jazz night next Thursday evening.

The Birkenhead College P.S.G., together with Y OUR help would like to put on a morning tea for the teachers and staff of Birkenhead College next Wednesday 31st May.
The morning tea is a belated “welcome back” and also a “thank you” for putting up with all the construction disruption, but most importantly it is a “we value and thank you” morning tea.
If you would like to/are able to contribute to this event with some home baking it would be greatly appreciated. You can drop off any such offerings at the school auditorium foyer from 0830 on the day. Thank you.

Ex student news…
Congratulations to Luca Sturny and Lennox Grootjans
(2015), who have been chosen for the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. Both boys attribute their love of music to their time at BC. “..in our final year (at school) we got two new teachers, Beth Cuizon and Cameron Allen, and they were really onto it”.
Luca plays the guitar and Lennox the drums. Both are studying a Bachelor of Music in Wellington.
BC Breakfast Club - it’s free!
Starting on Monday 22nd May there will be TWO breakfast club times every day. The existing one starting at 8am, and another one at morning interval at 11am.
There will be the usual smoothies, toast and cereal and at interval there will also be pancakes, fruit muffins, chocolate crunch, and hot chocolate. All free.
A great place to meet friends, come and do your homework or to keep dry.

1st XV Rugby
One for the History books – Birkenhead College 1st XV vs Massey High School 1st XV, 20th May
2017
The game on the 20th May 2017 is a game that the students in the 1st XV will never forget. Up against Massey High School 1st XV, who were 2016 North Harbour 1A Runners Up, in terrible conditions and major underdogs, the boys were ready. Right after the kick off things got that extra bit harder with Owen Fuatami taking a nasty knock to the face and coming off with 3 broken bones in his cheek and a broken nose.
The boys stuck at it and put some early pressure on the Massey forward pack and a nice lineout play by Isileli Kioa and Frey Chamberlin lead to a few more phases down the track, and Isileli got over for a great team try. BC up 5-0 only 5 minutes in.
As the rain poured in, the nasty Northwester made the game a real battle of attrition. A lot of the game was played in the middle of the field with both teams having opportunities to score either side of the halftime break. As the
game went on you could sense the belief building in the BC team, and each player digging deep to produce that extra tackle and extra effort throughout the 2nd half.
Still 5-0 up with 5 minutes to play, Massey gave away a penalty in front of their own post which Timothy Webster slotted over putting BC up 8-0, and 5 minutes away from making history. The next 5 minutes was ferocious but BC stuck at it with some amazing defence and ball carriers from Anthony Lemalu and victory was ours to celebrate. With the final whistle, the BC brothers had made their own piece of history and something that no one can ever take away from them. Well done boys.

Celebrating the Achievement Of Our Refugee Background Students
Last week some of our students attended an Auckland schools celebration of diversity in education. The day ensued with a variety of speeches, poetry, drama and cultural dancing by different school groups as well as an ethnic lunch. Dame Susan Devoy spoke to us about treating ethnic minorities with respect, humanity and mana, and reminded us how lucky we were to live in NZ. A great day was had by all.
