1. The Emerging Leaders Internship Program and the Communications Internship
Programs

The Emerging Leaders Internship Program sponsored by Walmart is a semester-long paid
internship for college students. Interns work four days on Capitol Hill, in federal agencies and at
non-profit organizations. Past interns have served in various capacities at the Department of
Justice (DOJ), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Transportation Security
Administration (TSA), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and on House
and Senate committees. On Friday afternoons, interns attend educational seminars that focus on
domestic and international issues, participate in leadership-training sessions and visit cultural and
historical sites in the Washington, D.C., area. Each cohort must complete a team community
service project in the surrounding community. CBCF provides housing and a stipend.
Qualifications
U.S. citizen or permit to work in the U.S.
Currently or recently enrolled in college full-time when applying for program.
Demonstrated interest in public service, governance, and policy-making process.
Selection Process
Emerging Leader Interns are selected based on the following criteria:
Solid scholastic achievement
Strong writing skills
Community service contributions
Evidence of leadership skills
Quality of paper application and, in some instances, interview performance
The selection is highly competitive. Applications are submitted to CBCF and reviewed by a
CBCF selection committee. Finalists are selected and notified by CBCF.

The CBCF Communications Internship is a semester-long program for college students who are
interested in learning about press and media relations on Capitol Hill. Interns work with the press
secretary or communications director in Congressional Black Caucus member offices. Interns
contribute substantially to their host offices by researching legislation, preparing press releases,
writing op-editorials, writing arguments for a position, organizing and helping to prepare for
briefings and forums, and performing various office tasks. Housing and a stipend are provided.
Qualifications
U.S. citizen or permit to work in the U.S.
Currently or recently enrolled in college full-time when applying for program
Demonstrated professional familiarity with journalism, public relations, or other media-
related fields
Selection Process
Selecting a CBCF Communications Intern is based on a combination of the following criteria:
Strength of faculty nomination
Strong writing skills
Exposure and some work experience in communications fields
Evidence of leadership skills
Quality of paper application and interview performance

2. Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Undergraduate Summer Analyst Program
The Undergraduate Summer Analyst Program provides outstanding undergraduate students with the
opportunity to gain valuable work experience in public service at the Federal Reserve Bank of New
York. Through advanced project work assignments and professional development activities, summer
analysts gain an extensive understanding of the Fed’s work. Analysts also have the opportunity to
enhance their business skills through critical financial analysis, formal presentations, research and writing.
Analysts are assigned to a particular area or function, but have opportunities for collaboration with other
analysts and employees from around the Bank. In addition to their daily responsibilities, analysts attend
weekly presentations hosted by senior management on the Bank's responsibilities and operations.
Qualifications
Applicants who have completed their sophomore year of college by the beginning of the internship are
eligible. The program begins in early June. The program is extremely competitive and size is
limited. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in banking, business, economics, public policy or
finance with a strong academic record. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are
essential, along with demonstrated PC skills. Specific requirements may be applied based on Bank area.
Applicants must be available for in-Bank interviews.
The New York Fed does not provide summer housing.

The summer program allows participants to learn about career opportunities in public service at the New
York Fed. The program is the Bank’s largest campus recruitment source for full-time jobs. Please view the

3. The Leadership Alliance
Summer Research - Early Identification Program (SR-EIP)
The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), offers undergraduates,
interested in pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD, the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the
guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one
collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and
scientific experimentation. The SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally
underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the
academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the
end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to
make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national
symposium. This all expense paid summer internship provides students with a competitive stipend, travel
and housing.
Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private college or university in
the United States or its territories, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. All applicants must:
Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Demonstrate interest and potential to pursue graduate study toward a PhD or MD-PhD.
Have completed at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining of their
undergraduate education by the start of the summer program.
Be a US citizen or have permanent resident status at the time of application.
Note: The SR-EIP is not designed for students pursuing professional training for careers in the practice of
law, business administration, clinical medicine, clinical psychology or the allied health professions.

4. The Public Policy International Affairs Fellowship Program
The PPIA Junior Summer Institutes (JSI) have been the hallmark of the PPIA Fellowship Program for over
30 years. JSI is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for graduate
programs in public and international affairs and careers as policy professionals, public administrators and
other leadership roles in public service. The JSI curriculum includes economics, statistics,
domestic/international policy issues and leadership topics, all designed to sharpen the students'
quantitative, analytic and communication skills. Extracurricular activities are also included. These skills are
vital for admission into the top graduate programs in public and international affairs. The successful
completion of a summer institute is a requirement for PPIA Fellows.
Qualifications:
All prospective PPIA Fellows are expected to dedicate themselves to the traditions and objectives of the
PPIA Fellowship Program, have an abiding commitment to public service and contribute to more diverse
perspectives in public policy and international affairs. The following are more specific criteria and
guidelines:
Must be a United States citizen or legal permanent resident to apply to the JSI's hosted by Berkeley,
Maryland and Michigan. International applicants pursuing a bachelor's degree in the U.S. will be
considered by Carnegie Mellon and Princeton.
Must have completed junior year of college by the start of Junior Summer Institute (JSI) and have
at least one full semester or two quarters of coursework remaining before graduation.
Must not have attained a Bachelor’s Degree prior to start of Junior Summer Institute.
Must be committed to completing a Master’s Degree in public and/or international affairs at one of
the PPIA Consortium graduate schools.
Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a professional career associated with public service such
as government, nonprofits, humanitarian and international organizations and other related
programs.
Must contribute to the diversity of perspectives.
Economic need is given consideration.

5. The Schomburg-mellon Humanitites Summer Institute
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation have created
the Schomburg-Mellon Humanities Summer Institute to encourage minority students and others with an
interest in African-American and African Diasporan Studies to pursue graduate degrees in the humanities.
The program, which is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, offers a six-week session for ten
rising seniors (juniors in spring 2012, entering their senior year in fall 2012, graduating in 2013). Five will
be selected from colleges and universities in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut and five from
Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation.
The Institute, with the help of renowned scholars, will develop and nurture the students’ interest in the
appropriate disciplines, and provide them with the requisite intellectual challenges and orientations needed
to pursue humanities careers and to reach their full potential.
Qualifications:
Students entering their senior year in fall 2012

· Enrolled in HBCUs or New York, New Jersey, Connecticut
colleges or universities

6. The T. Howard Foundation Internship Program
The T. Howard Foundation Internship Program provides minority students with internship opportunities in
the multimedia and entertainment industry.
Our partners include some of the largest media companies in the world. Our students are placed with
companies from New York to Los Angeles, Washington, DC to Atlanta and many places in between. Our
host company partners are committed to diversity and providing valuable industry experiences to T.
Howard Foundation interns.
Qualifications
Be a minority college student
Sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student status at an accredited U.S. college/university
U.S. Citizen or international student holding a F-1 visa
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
Available to work full-time from June-August (summer internship program only)

7. The Urban Institute Summer Academy
As a part of the Academy, fellows will engage in an intensive nine-week program of skills building and
training in policy analysis and research on location at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. – the
Nation’s capitol and the heart of U.S. policy-making. Students will spend the summer taking classes,
attending policy seminars, and conducting analyses to hone their research skills while gaining exposure to
a wide range of career opportunities in policy research and analysis.
Qualifications
Be full-time college students
Be rising seniors (Have completed their junior year by the summer of 2011)
Major in a social science discipline
Be from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group*
Be a US citizen or permanent legal resident
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0)
Selection Process
Candidates will be selected based on academic performance (both GPA and rigor of academic course load),
interest in public policy, demonstrated leadership potential and community involvement. The selection
committee will be comprised of the Executive Director and a diverse panel of senior advisors and
researchers. If selected as a semi-finalist, applicants will be required to provide additional information on
their proposed research project. Finalists must also participate in mandatory phone interviews.

8. The Rockefeller University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program
provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to conduct laboratory research. SURF students work with
leading scientists in a broad range of areas including biochemistry; structural biology and chemistry;
molecular, cell and developmental biology; immunology; virology and microbiology; neuroscience;
physics; and mathematical biology.
College sophomores and juniors are eligible to spend 10 weeks during the summer in a Rockefeller
University laboratory. The program begins in early June and ends in mid-August. Placement in
laboratories is centralized through the Dean's Office. Students are matched with laboratories according to
their stated research interests, and work on projects under the direct supervision of faculty, postdoctoral
fellows and/or senior graduate students.
Each year, students are chosen from a wide variety of applicants with diverse scientific backgrounds and
training. Annually, more than 500 students apply for admission into the SURF Program and approximately
15 are accepted.
In order to fully experience the world of scientific research, SURF students are required to present and
discuss scientific publications at weekly Journal Club meetings. This exposure allows participants to
familiarize themselves with speaking to a scientific audience. SURF students also attend a special lecture
series where Rockefeller faculty discuss their research and the evolution of their scientific interests. At the
end of the program, SURF students will present their research results to fellow students and mentors at a
poster session. SURF students receive a stipend of $4,000.00. Free housing will be provided for
students who cannot commute.

9. Yale School of Management Pre-MBA Leadership Program
The Yale School of Management Pre-MBA Leadership Program is a highly selective, two-week summer
program aimed at college sophomores, juniors and seniors and recent college graduates from populations
typically under-represented in management education. We introduce you to the fundamentals of
management education and give you the tools necessary to hone your individual leadership skills.
This emphasis on leadership flows from the mission of the School of Management: to educate leaders for
business and society. When you know how to inspire people, as well as manage capital, materials and
ideas, you can become a more potent agent of change. After completing this program, you will return to
your campus and your community with a (re) focused sense of purpose that can guide you for many years
to come.
Qualifications
The Pre-MBA Leadership Program is tailored toward current college sophomores, juniors and seniors and
recent college graduates from populations typically under-represented in management education and those
from non-traditional pre-MBA academic tracks. We strongly encourage students from the liberal arts,
science and engineering fields to apply.
All applicants must demonstrate strong leadership potential and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in

10. The New York Needs You (NYNY) Fellowship Program
New York Needs You is seeking an energetic and entrepreneurial intern to join the NYNY Programs
Department. The intern will be actively involved in the planning and execution of the NYNY Workshops,
an integral part of NYNY's flagship two-year Fellows Program. The intern will gain knowledge of program
planning, event management, information tracking and will have the opportunity to attend planning and
department meetings, as well as to take advantage of selected in-house trainings and briefings.
Qualifications
We are searching for high potential, goal-oriented college students who are the first in their families to
attend college and who possess a strong track record of performance and leadership. In selecting our
NYNY Fellow class, we will consider the following:
Performance
Applicants must have a strong academic record, reflecting a commitment to hard work and excellence. We
recommend that applicants have a college GPA of 3.25 or greater.
Leadership
Applicants must demonstrate leadership and a commitment to communities in need through work
experience, campus organizations, athletics or other extracurricular activities.
Ambition
Applicants must clearly articulate their professional goals and possess a passion for achieving their
professional goals. The fellowship is open to students from all disciplines and interests.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Preference is given to:
Students who are the first in their families to attend college and those who are from low–income
backgrounds
Rising sophomores (current freshmen)
New York residents attending New York-based colleges and universities.
*The list above is not exhaustive but does represent the most important factors that we will consider in
making selection decisions. We will make exceptions to the criteria listed above if a student demonstrates
unique potential in other ways or has overcome particularly adverse circumstances.

11. The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship
The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with
backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—into teaching in
high-need secondary schools in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Eligible applicants include current
undergraduates, recent college graduates, midcareer professionals, and retirees who have majored in, or
had careers in, STEM fields.
Qualifications
The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds—including current undergraduates, recent
college graduates, mid-career professionals, and retirees—into teaching in high-need secondary schools. A
qualified applicant should:
demonstrate a commitment to the program and its goals;
have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency;
have attained, or expect to attain by June 30, 2012, a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S.
college or university;
have majored in and/or have a strong professional background in a STEM field;
have achieved a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale
(negotiable for applicants from institutions that do not employ a 4.0 GPA scale)

Must be U.S. citizen. Minority undergraduates: declared accounting majors with an overall and accounting
GPA of at least 3.0, completed 30 credits including 6 in accounting, full-time (unless you are completing

Qualifications:

(Science/Engineering/Mathematics) faculty member, have at least 60 credits with B average or better in

TRIALS - Training and Recruitment Initiative for Admission to Leading Law
Schools, is a partnership of NYU School of Law, Harvard Law School, and the

TRIALS is a residential scholarship program that helps talented and motivated college
students of modest means gain admission to the nation’s leading law schools. This
rigorous five-week summer course enhances opportunities for students of limited
economic means and underrepresented backgrounds by bolstering their skills and
focusing their goals. TRIALS is a full scholarship program. Students are not responsible
for any tuition, fees, or related expenses. In addition to the academic curriculum of the
program, every TRIALS student will receive: (1) transportation to and from the host
university campus; (2) campus housing for the duration of the five-week program; (3)
three daily meals at the campus dining hall; (4) access to the host university’s library,
computer centers, and gym. Each TRIALS student also receives a $3,000 stipend to
replace or supplement summer employment income. Students are encouraged to allocate
a significant percentage of their stipends for school-year expenses such as tuition,
housing, books, and other supplies. TRIALS is designed to ensure that no student will

o Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) -
SHIP provides a six week summer placement opportunity for junior/senior
high school, and freshmen/sophomore college students who have
expressed an interest in the health field. Students are exposed to a variety
of careers in the health fields as well as to health issues affecting their
communities. SHIP students are encouraged to observe health
professionals and inquire whenever possible about their career paths,
education paths, job descriptions, and responsibilities. Students are placed
three days per week for five hours a day, with mandatory didactic sessions
once per week. These sessions encompass a full day and include lectures,
field trips, and other health related activities.

Urban Institute Summer Academy - The Urban Institute Academy for Public Policy
Analysis and Research is a unique and challenging program of skills-building, career
development, and mentoring for undergraduates from underrepresented populations
interested in careers in public policy research. The year-long fellowship begins with an

between their junior and senior year of college the skills and exposure crucial to
