How to start with a magic ring1. Lay out your yarn like this.

2. Grab it where the yarn crosses, and hold it between your fingers.

3. With your hook, pull the strand on the right trough the loop, and make a stitch.

4. Start working the first round of the square. Work your stitches around both strands.

5. Pull on the tail of the ring to close it; this makes sure there is no hole in the center.

6. Close the round with a slip stitch.

How to do the invisible join1. Don’t join your last round with a slip stitch.

2. Cut the yarn and pull out the loop on your hook.

3. Thread the yarn end through your needle.

4. Insert your needle from front to back through the top of the first dc (skip the chain 3).

5. Insert your needle through the back loop of the last dc you made.

6. Sew in the end at the back and voila! A perfect finish to your square!

How to join a new colourWhen joining a new colour, you can use a standing stitch. Use the invisible join on the last round of your square first. Grab the new colour and start with a slip knot on your hook.

Now begin your stitch like you normally would. It’s that easy!

To join the round, simply slip stitch into the top of the first stitch. I usually slip stitch through the back loop only.

How to block your projectUsing blocking mats and pins (I use KnitPro), stretch out your square gently and pin in place. I usually put 4 pins in the corners, and 4 on the sides. Make sure you don’t stretch your square out too much; the sides should remain mostly straight.

Spray your square with water from a spray bottle. I add a little Eucalan to my water; this is optional (but gives it a very nice scent). You can use warm or tepid water; this makes your project dry faster.

When your square is dry, remove the pins and remove the square from the blocking board.

General tips

- Read through the pattern at least once before you start. - If the amount of squares you have to make in a week seems daunting to you, try to make one square a day. I like to crochet on my sofa in front of the TV with a nice cup of tea; and before I know it, all my squares are finished! - Make sure you have a good light source near you when you work at night. You need to be able to clearly see your stitches. Squinting to see is never good for your eyes, nor your work!- Take breaks if your hands, arms or shoulders start to feel sore. Trust me on this one. Get up every once in a while, take a short walk, drink another cup of tea and resume crocheting. I crochet for about 1 hour at a time before I take a break. If you do feel any discomfort, stop immediately. - Feel free to use any colour (but leave colour 726 from kit 1 and 717 from kit 2; these are the colours that you have 4 balls of). - Choose the most comfy place in the house to crochet. Like a sofa, that nice big chair by the window, your bed perhaps - all to make sure you will stay comfortable while you work. - Sew in the ends right after you finish your square.- I usually block my squares right after I’m done making them, so I block as I go. You could of course block all of your squares at once, but you’d need a lot of blocking boards and pins!- The aim of this CAL is to let out your creative side, so choose any colours you like! You can even combine multiple colours in one square. Try to come up with surprising colour combinations. The sky is the limit!

- Have fun! :)

You can even combine multiple colours in one square.- Use the invisible join method to finish your square, as described in the Tips & Tricks PDF. This ensures that all sides of your square are exactly the same, which will make crocheting them together at the end a lot easier.- Sew in the ends right after you finish your square.- To get the best result, block your squares. You can find more info on how to do this in the Tips & Tricks PDF.- If you want to print the pattern, please only print page 4. This is a special page, designed to use the least amount of ink and of course paper.

- Have fun! :)

Supplies

- Cotton 8 yarn, colour 642 from kit 1 or colour 726 from kit 2- crochet hook 3mm- a pair of scissors- darning needle

Stitches used (US terms)

- Double crochet - Chain- Slip stitch- Front post double crochet

Tips

- Read through the pattern at least once before you start. - Feel free to use any colour (but leave colour 726 from kit 1 and 717 from kit 2; these are the colours that you have 4 balls of). - The aim of this CAL is to let out your creative side, so choose any colours you like!

- Have fun! :)

Important notes on yardage!

Option 1 is the preferred method of joining which will leave you enough yarn for a border next week. However, if you would like a more decorative join, I have put in an alternative option 2. Option 2 will use all your base colour yarns and will not include a border. The choice is yours!

Option 1

We are working the horizontal rows first. Start with a slip knot on your hook/a standing stitch. You can find a short tutorial on how to do this in the Tips & Tricks PDF.

1. Grab 2 squares and put them wrong side together. Insert your hook from front to back through the ch2 space in the right hand corder of both squares. Work 1sc.

2. Insert your hook through the back loops of both squares; work 1sc.

3. *1sc* across through the back loops of both squares, until you reach the corner. Insert your hook from front to back through the ch2 space in the left hand corder of both squares, and work 1sc.

4. Grab 2 more squares and put them wrong side together. Insert your hook from front to back through the ch2 space in the right hand corder of both squares. Work 1sc. Continue from row 2.

Repeat rows 1 - 4 until all the squares are joined horizontally.

Turn your blanket and work the vertical rows in the same way. When you get to an ‘intersection’, work 1sc in the ch2 spaces of both squares, ch1, and work 1sc in the ch2 spaces of the next 2 squares.

Option 2

We are working the horizontal rows first. Start with a slip knot on your hook/a standing stitch. You can find a short tutorial on how to do this in the Tips & Tricks PDF.

1. Grab 2 squares with right sides facing. Insert your hook through the first ch2 corner space of the bottom square, and work 1sc. Work another sc in the first dc. Ch2; work a sc in the first ch2 corner space of the top square, and another sc in the first dc of that same square.

2. Ch2. Skip one stitch on the bottom square and work 1sc. Ch2; skip one stitch on the top square and work 1sc. Keep zig-zagging along the sides of both squares until you reach the corner ch2 space of the bottom square. Work 1sc in the last dc, and another sc in the ch2 sp. Ch2; then work 1sc in the last dc of the top square, and another sc in the ch2 sp of the top square.

3. Grab 2 more squares with right sides facing. Ch2; Insert your hook through the first ch2 corner space of the bottom square, and work 1sc. Work another sc in the first dc. Ch2; work a sc in the first ch2 corner space of the top square, and another sc in the first dc of that same square. Continue from row 2.

Repeat rows 1 - 3 until all the square are joined horizontally.

Turn your blanket and work the vertical rows in the same way.

Caring for your blanket

You can safely wash your blanket at 40°C. The Scheepjes Cotton 8 yarn is colour fast, but if you’re concerned about any colours running you could use a colour catcher with the first wash. You don’t need to block your blanket again after you’ve washed it; you can just lay it flat and gently smooth it into shape when it is still wet. Don’t put your blanket through the dryer; let it dry flat and naturally.

For those who have made their blankets using Scheepjes yarns: We’d love to compile a visual

record of the variety of colours and creative variations you’ve all produced over the course of this CAL, to share on our Facebook page!

If you are happy for us to share your photo, please upload a photo of your final completed blanket (in the comments section below the

pattern link), stating that you are happy for it to be shared. If you could also provide the yarn type and colour numbers you’ve used to help inspire others that would be awesome! If you have used an official kit you can simply state

kit 1 or kit 2.

Blocking

Blocking the border for blankets made with joining option 1If you have made your blanket using option 1 for the join and added the border, it is important to block the border. It will really make a difference, since it will open up the border, giving your blanket a nice lacy border and a perfect finished look! You don’t need to block the join if you have used option 1.To block the border, don’t block/stretch your entire blanket. Instead, block the border separately by pinning along the sides of the squares and in the little picots of the border.Blocking may seem like it’s very time consuming and unnecessary, but it is absolutely worth it in the end!

Blocking the join for blankets made with joining option 2If you have made your blanket using option 2 for the join, it is important to block your blanket one more time. It will really make a difference, since it will open up the join, giving your blanket a nice lacy join and a perfect finished look! Blankets joined with option 2 don’t have a border. If you choose to make your own border, please block the join first, as it will stretch your blanket significantly. To block the join, don’t block/stretch your entire blanket. Instead, block the separate joins from top to bottom and from left to right. Pin alongside the joins to open them up, or use blocking wires to make it easier. Blocking may seem like it’s very time consuming and unnecessary, but it is absolutely worth it in the end!
