"This work kept me sober. It wasn't a question of those alcoholics giving me anything. My stability came out of trying to give, not out of demanding that I receive." Grapevine, January 1958
HOW THIS STARTED
Evolving from the first Atlanta Men’s Workshop (started in 1982 by the late Doc Crandell of Roswell, Georgia), to a group of men in Southern California informed by a member of Alcoholics Anonymous who attended the Atlanta workshop, a series of miracles in recovery has spread through to the Western Slope of Colorado. Since May 2001 the Back to Basics Men’s Workshop in Southern California has hosted two workshops a year – in May and October.
In 2005 the Colorado Robber’s Roost men’s group decided to carry on the tradition of recovery at a First One’s for Free Workshop in Austin, Colorado. We were amazed at the support from our Atlanta, Southern California men’s groups and others who traveled in unity and spirit to support us. The 2nd Annual Reunion found us a home at Black Mesa Lodge in the spectacular setting of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
In Southern California, a scholarship fund was named for the late Pete Hodge (who attended all of the Back to Basics Men’s Workshops and was instrumental in carrying the message to the incarcerated alcoholic), and continues to change the lives of those attending the Workshops.
In Colorado, a Memorial Scholarship in the name of Norm Chaffee, Pete's Sponsor, (he attended every Workshop until called to the Big Meeting in the Sky) continues the legacy of his years of selfless service.
Our logo, from the resting place of Pete Hodge, symbolizes the tireless efforts of those who have gone before us sharing this message of hope for the still suffering alcoholic.
We echo the words of the late Dr. William D. Silkworth: “The unselfishness of these men… is inspiring. They believe in themselves and still more in the Power which pulls chronic alcoholics back from the gates of death.”
