3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Stay with us, Lord, for it is almost evening” (cf. Lk 24:29). This was the insistent invitation that the two disciples journeying to Emmaus on the evening of the day of the resurrection ad-dressed to the Wayfarer who had accompanied them on their journey. Weighed down with sadness, they never imagined that this stranger was none other than their Master, risen from the dead. Yet they felt their hearts burning within them (cf. v. 32) as He spoke to them and “explained” the Scriptures. The light of the Word unlocked the hardness of their hearts and “opened their eyes” (cf. v. 31). Amid the shadows of the passing day and the darkness that clouded their spirit, the Wayfarer brought a ray of light which rekindled their hope and led their hearts to yearn for the fullness of light. “Stay with us”, they pleaded. And He agreed. Soon afterwards, Jesus’ face would disappear, yet the Master would “stay” with them, hidden in the “breaking of the bread” which had opened their eyes to recognize Him.” (St. John Paul II) Pope Francis in 2014 gave a practical expression of the new evangelization using “the story of Emmaus” The two disci-ples have left Jerusalem. They are leaving … scandalized by the failure of the Messiah in whom they had hoped and who now appeared utterly vanquished, humiliated, even after the third day. Here we have to face the difficult mystery of those people who leave the Church, who, under the illusion of alternative ideas, now think that the Church – their Jerusalem – can no longer offer them anything meaningful and important. So they set off on the road alone, with their disappointment. Perhaps the Church appeared too weak, perhaps too distant from their needs, perhaps too poor to re-spond to their concerns, perhaps too cold, perhaps too caught up with itself, perhaps a prisoner of its own rigid formu-las, perhaps the world seems to have made the Church a relic of the past, unfit for new questions; perhaps the Church could speak to people in their infancy but not to those come of age. It is a fact that nowadays there are many people like the two disciples of Emmaus; not only those looking for answers in the new religious groups that are sprouting up, but also those who already seem godless, both in theory and in practice.” “Faced with this situation, what are we to do?,” he asks. We need, he replies, to do what Jesus did. We need to meet them on the road away from Jerusalem, to enter into their dialogue, to take their questions seriously, and to try to help them to recognize what they’re leaving and why — and how and why they should return. “We need,” Pope Francis says, “a Church unafraid of going forth into their night, … of meeting them on their way, … of entering into their conversation. We need a Church able to dialogue with those disciples who, having left Jerusalem behind, are wandering aimlessly, alone, with their own disappointment, disillu-sioned by a Christianity now considered barren, fruitless soil, incapable of generating meaning. … We need a Church capable of walking at people’s side, of doing more than simply listening to them; a Church that accompanies them on their journey; a Church able to make sense of the ‘night’ contained in the flight of so many of our brothers and sisters from Jerusalem; a Church that realizes that the reasons why people leave also contain reasons why they can eventually return. But we need to know how to interpret, with courage, the larger picture.” May we too, following the example of Jesus come to the encounter of those in need of the Lord and bring them to the Holy Mass where the Lord will reveal Himself and be discovered in the Scriptures and in the Eucharist. Father Mariano Varela, IVE

Catholic Charities Annual Mother’s Day Appeal 2017

There is quote in Les Miserables that states, “To love another person is to see the f ace of God.” We are humbled to see the face of God in those we serve at Catholic Charities. Pope Francis re-minds us that we must be “living signs of hope.” When you support Catholic Charities efforts to provide help and hope for the poor and marginalized in

southern Minnesota, you are a living sign of hope for all. Together on May 13 and 14 we can be a sign of hope in this world by sup-porting the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal. Your compassion-ate generosity is a life-changing blessing!

Copyright © J. S.
