Welcome back to all students and parents as we embark on the final stretch before rollover into our new school year which occurs on Monday 14th November 2016. All students in all year groups will

roll into their new school year at this time and final 2016 school reports will arrive home soon after this time. The entire school population is looking forward to seeing the full implementation of the compressed curriculum structure where both Year 11 and Year 12 students will study together for the first time. New classes for students have been allocated and all students have made their subject selections to finalise their pattern of study for 2017.

Our Year 11 and 12 students have commenced their Higher School Certificate Examinations which run until Thursday 3rd November 2016 with Drama being the final examination for our students.

I have been particularly proud of our students who are sitting their HSC examinations at a time when their hearts are filled with sadness surrounding the tragic loss of their close friends Luke Foley and Jack Fenton. It has been a difficult time for the entire community as we come to terms with this sad event and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these two young men. Our school has had a very long association with Luke’s family and many staff close to the family are struggling to deal with this tragedy. Our thoughts are also with the family of ex-student Riley McFawn who is recovering in hospital.

During this stressful time, I would like to acknowledge our amazing careers teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Fitzpatrick who has committed herself to supporting the HSC students offsite at St Joseph’s School prior to each examination and completing important paperwork. Our school will continue to provide services over the coming weeks to ensure all in our community are supported.

The last three weeks of our school year will disappear quickly and they are jam packed with preparations for new courses, timetables and end of year excursions and presentations. Our students will work right up until the last day of the school year, which is Friday 16th December 2016. As students will change classes and be starting new electives from the 14th of November 2016, fee invoices for new courses will be posted home earlier than usual. If you have any concerns about our fee structure or payment, please contact Ken Barwick (0418 629 198) or Steve Harper (02 6336 1606).

GalleryBELOW: Snapshots from the Central West Secondary Principals Conference held in Oberon this week.

The Stage 3 scholarship is for an incoming Year 6 student from each of our partner schools. These are selected according to the same criteria as the high school students but selection is coordinated by the host primary school and presented at the end of the year at a function determined by that school. Scholarships will be held in trust for use against school expenses, such as excursions, uniforms, fees and materials required for courses.

Applications will be submitted to a panel of consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, P&C representative, and one or two sponsors as available. Students will be interviewed by the panel at a date to be determined at this stage. Secondary principals from public high schools in the central west met this week for two half days in Oberon. As well as general business discussions, the principals engaged in a session on ebooks with teacher librarians, a session on eVet delivered by ex-Oberon High School teacher Katie Graham and a session delivered by Julie Pyne, Liaison Officer with BOSTES.

Support for Year 10 moving into the Senior College

Oberon High School will be conducting a Senior College transition program for students during Term 4. This program is designed to make the transition of students into senior school as smooth as possible. Our new Compressed Curriculum Model commences on Monday 14th November 2016 and this transition program is designed to cover important material that would be relevant for any senior student. We have scheduled a range of transition seminars to fully inform all students and arm them with the knowledge to help them complete senior school successfully. These will occur each Wednesday from Week 6 to Week 9, with the Jamberoo excursion set for Wednesday of Week 10. Attendance on these transition days is compulsory. Many compulsory school work commitments will be completed on these transition days which will assist students as they move into senior school and these are required for BOSTES.

All My Own Work is a compulsory course for all senior students and is designed to highlight the idea of fairness and integrity in the completion of assessment tasks.

When students are caught cheating or plagiarising in assessment tasks and this impacts greatly on the integrity of assessment programs within our school this must be registered with the Board of Studies on a malpractice register, hence, this course is important for students to complete seriously.

Crossroads aims to build students’ sense of empowerment and respect for themselves and others. Information can be found at: http://www.learning.schools.nsw.edu.au/crossroads/

Crossroads is a compulsory PDHPE course that all students in Year 11 and/or Year 12 must complete. It is designed to help senior students address issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when they face significant changes and challenges in their lives. Crossroads aims to prepare and support these students as they encounter situations related to identity, independence and their changing responsibilities.

Mr. Mark Armstrong will be giving students technology support on these Wednesdays to ensure each student with a device can operate effectively on our school network. Important information about assessment tasks, work placement for VET courses, major works for practical subjects and specific course requirements will be provided. These are all areas that students need understanding of to best help them complete senior school successfully.

P&C Halloween Bingo Night

A big thanks to everyone who attended the P&C Halloween Bingo Bonanza on Friday 21st October 2016. Over 100 people attended a very successful event where more than $1,300 was raised on the night to assist the P&C in supporting our school. I would like to acknowledge the special efforts of our front office staff who organised a lot of the promotion and Shannon Marshall who managed to collect most of the prizes. My thanks goes to our hard working P&C who continue to support our school through their amazing events each year. Well done to all involved.

The Country Women's Association of NSW Bathurst branch offers an annual Diamond Jubilee scholarship. Oberon High School had six Year 10 students who were successful on gaining an interview for the scholarship, and travelled into Bathurst on Tuesday October 18, to be interviewed. These students were competing for the scholarship against a range of students from Bathurst High School, The Scots School, Mackillop College and All Saints College. The scholarship was designed to assist a Year 10 student who wishes to continue into Year 11. On the day, the interviewing panel looked at the girls’ academic achievements, their goals for the future, their presentation on the day and their financial circumstances. The scholarship is valued initially at $1000, with the potential of gaining a further $500 if the successful applicant continues their studies into Year 12. All six girls came out of their interview feeling very pleased and confident with how they performed. They collectively agreed that they have learnt a lot from the process, regardless of whether they are the successful recipient of the Diamond Jubilee scholarship or not.

All six students and their families have been invited to a presentation night on Friday October 28, where the winner of the Diamond Jubilee scholarship will be announced. Massive thanks to Miss Shannon Marshall for organising the student nominations and taking the girls to their interviews. I am sure Friday night will be very exciting!

On Thursday 20th October 2016, five Oberon High School students competed in a Rural Fire Service school cadet competition and graduated from the cadet program. Oberon High School finished a close second in the competition.

The team comprised of Daniel Perry, Hannah Dusselaar, Emily Henby, Abe Rowe and Malcom Voerman. They travelled to Portland Central School and competed in four challenges against 5 other teams. They worked well as a team and won the Bucket Challenge. After the competition the students were presented with certificates for graduating the cadet program. Well done to all involved in this very successful program.

Year 7 and 8 Boys and Girls Touch Results

On Wednesday 19th October 2016 our Year 7/8 Boys and girls teams went to Bathurst to play in the NSW All Schools Touch Football Bathurst Championships.

The girls team played hard all day although were defeated in all 4 games. Close scores and fast games were the flavour of the day.

The girls used excellent team work and attacking skills to score a total of 6 tries throughout the day.

The boy’s team were a little more successful. They were unlucky not to make the semi-finals. The boys needed to beat Orange (NSW 7/8 Touch Runners up 2015) but were narrowly defeated 4-5. A combination of speed and rehearsed plays enabled the boys to be very competitive on the day. Big thanks to Mr Mitton and Mr Bender for coaching on the day, and to Jess Ryan for refereeing. Also thanks to Mrs Michelle Ryan for taking over 400 photos of the teams on the day.
