Principal’s message
Year 12 2017
On the last week of Term 3, our Year 12 students had
their final face to face classes, which concluded their
school careers.
I’d like to congratulate and thank parents for choosing
BHS as their school of choice, as I believe our students
have been given every opportunity to succeed post
school. Congratulations to all, for their hard work and
persistence to complete the year and for seeing it
through.
However, now isn’t the time to take the foot off the
pedal as there is still a number of weeks before the first
external HSC exam. This allows plenty of time to revise
and review the work they have done over the last 12
months.
2018 Curriculum Offerings
Once again BHS is offering a wide and varied curriculum
for students in 2018. We have just finalised our Stage 5
and Stage 6 subject selections.
12 electives are being offered in Stage 5 across three
lines (Agriculture, Music, PASS, Food Technology,
Industrial Technology Metal, Industrial Technology
Timber, Visual Arts, Information Software Technology,
Commerce and Photo Digital Media).
As well, there are 22 separate courses for our Year 11
students to study throughout 2018 and 2019. (including
6 VET courses, which also have nationally recognised
qualifications). The fact that we can offer such a large
range of subjects, allows students at BHS to select from
a range of different courses in different areas with a
very wide choice.
For Year 7 we will again be running LOTE, Agriculture
and music and in Year 8 in lieu of LOTE, we will be
running a STEM class where students will gain and apply
knowledge to deepen their understanding and develop
creative and critical thinking skills within an authentic
context.

Staffing
At the conclusion of Term 3 Mrs Aileen Clear will be
taking Long Service Leave until the end of the year. I
would like give a personal thanks to Mrs Clear for her
commitment and hard work throughout 2017, whilst
she has been replacing Ms Fiona Smee. Ms Anthea
Boyle will be replacing Mrs Clear for Term 4 2017. Ms
Boyle will arrive during the holidays to make a start first
day back. She has worked in a number of central
schools and will be covering several of the English
classes.
In 2018 we will be running Stage 6 Music 1, and we
have gone through the process of advertisement for the
job on a temporary basis. Mr Richard Smeal, will be
replacing Mr Peter Mulholland at the end of 2017. Mr
Smeal has delivered Music 1 at HSC level over a number
of years, and will be travelling down next term to have a
look at the school and the town. Mr Smeal’s wife is also
a teacher, who will be working on a casual basis
throughout 2018.
Mrs Mandy McConnell will be taking Long Service Leave
for Term 4 2017 and will be replaced by Ms Jo
Cunningham. I would like to wish Mrs McConnell a
relaxing and enjoyable break.
Mr Glenn Buchanan will be continuing his secondment
for the remainder of the year, delivering the new
budgeting tool for the LMBR. I will continue to relieve
this position for the remainder of 2017. Mr Rhys Martin
will continue to relieve the Head Teacher TAS/PDHPE
position for 2017.
50th Anniversary
The 50th Anniversary has quickly arrived, with the school
having an open day on Saturday 7th October and a
dinner on that night at Tudor Tavern. This will be an
excellent opportunity for past students, parents and
teachers to catch up and celebrate the school site being
opened in 1967. During the day (12:30pm – 5pm) the
classrooms will be open for viewing, with a number of
the old school performances being played within the
classrooms, as well as student work being put on
display. At 3:30pm we will be having a tree planting.
There is still time to book for the function - just visit
www.trybooking.com
Parent Teacher Interviews On the Wednesday of Week 9 we held our Term 3
Parent-Teacher interviews to provide students and
parents the opportunity to have feedback on another
term of work. We had over a third of the student body
represented on the evening. If you were unable to
attend, please do not hesitate to contact the school to
organise a catch up. During the night I asked parents to
complete a survey on the school to review and to
evaluate sections of our School Plan. Overall, the
feedback that we received was pleasing regarding the
progress that we have made.
Barham High School Diligence & Integrity
NAPLAN Readiness
In Week 9 we completed the NAPLAN readiness testing
for our Year 7 and Year 9 students, to measure the
capabilities of the schools’ wifi and the technical
aspects of the software. Overall, the testing went well,
with issues being identified and provided as feedback.
Term 4 2017 It will again be a busy term for BHS in Term 4. We have
a number of excursions running from Stage 5
Grampians in Week 2, Great Victorian Bike Ride in Week
8 as well as a number of other important school
initiatives (Drivers Ed, Teen Mental Health First Aid,
Work Experience, AFL 9’s, Cricket, Performing Arts Day,
Stage 5 Exam period and the external HSC Exams). Keep
an eye out for these events, and have a safe and happy
break.
I’m tipping Richmond vs Adelaide in the Grand Final,
and unfortunately Richmond will get the chocolates by
34 points.
Swooping Season
Murray River Council residents have discovered that
swooping magpies have already settled in for the
season with several ‘hot spots’ also identified around
the school area.
As the weather starts to warm up, birds are starting to
swoop to defend their eggs and young if they perceive
people to be a potential threat. This can be very
alarming, but it is usually only a warning.
Murray River Council’s Compliance Team are
encouraging people to notify each other in the school
community about swooping bird hot spots as swooping
will only increase in the next month.
While the best way to avoid being swooped is to avoid
the area all together, sometimes this just isn’t possible
so the best defence is to at least know they are there.
So, if you are in the location where there is a swooping
bird just remember to protext heads and eyes and aim
to move quickly.
Otherwise, for protection, wear a helmet or a hat, or
carry an open umbrella. Sunglasses placed on the back
of the head are sometimes effective.
The Department of Environment, Land and Water have
also set up an online map to warn the public of danger
spots. To report a swooping incident visit the online
map at www.wildlife.vic.gov/managing-
wildlife/swooping-birds

Deputy Principal’s message
Term 3 As another busy term comes to an end, the holiday
should provide time for students to rest and
recharge for next term. The holiday will provide an
opportunity for students to make sure all of the
day to day equipment they need is refreshed and
replaced if need be. For stage 5 and 6 students I
am referring to laptops especially if they need to
be repaired or replaced. But all students need to
make sure that they have dairies, pens, pencils,
calculators and workbooks and whatever is needed
period by period. Towards the end of term some
students were arriving to class not fully prepared
which impacts on the whole group.
Parents and caregivers are reminded that students
are to attend school on each and every school day.
Regular attendance at school is essential to assist
students to maximise their potential. Schools, in
partnership with parents, are responsible for
promoting the regular attendance of students.
Parents and caregivers are required to explain the
absences of their children from school promptly
and within seven days to the school. An
explanation for absence must be provided to the
school within 7 days of the first day of any period
of absence. I will endeavor to contact parents
promptly of an absence being unexplained, if
contact has not already been made.
Preliminary Exams
Year 11 are completing end of Preliminary Course
exams this week and we wish them all the best. It
is hard to imagine that when they resume school
after the holidays they will begin their year 12 HSC
courses. For some it has been a bit of a reality
check as end of course exams assess the whole
course. Ongoing preparation is demanded, so it is a
timely reminder as the year 12 courses begin.
At the same time Year 12 students are finishing
their courses this week. Hopefully no effort will be
spared by them in preparing for their HSC exams.
They should keep in close contact with their
teachers for any support that they should need. At
the conclusion of the Farewell Assembly on Friday
Year 12 students, parents and caregivers are
invited back to the high school for morning tea.
The first HSC exam is the English paper 1 on
Monday October 16th.
Term 4 Term 4 already looms as a busy term with the
Stage 5 Grampians excursion happening in week 2,
another YES program will run through the term,
Driver Ed, All my Own Work, Teen Mental Health,
Work Experience and the Great Vic bike Ride are all
scheduled to occur. I look forward to term 4 after a
restful break.

Term 3 Sport
It has been another big term for sport, culminating with
the open boys Riverina cricket trials on Thursday the
21st of September. Good luck to our future stars in
Garry Lolicato, Tom Guerra and Clay Davis as they travel
to Wagga for the try outs!
We start all again early next term, with the brand new
mixed AFL 9’s comp in Deniliquin on Tuesday the 17th of
October, which is week 2. The boys and girls had an
intense training session last Friday, where they learnt
the modified rules of the game and taught Patrick
Dangerfield and Dustin Martin a few things for their
finals this weekend during their skills session. I look
forward to seeing our students excel in this new format
and have yet another opportunity to represent the
school in our widening extra-curricula activities.
Enjoy the break, relax and get prepared for another big
term of sport in term 4!
English/HSIE Report
Week of Farewells The English/ HSIE department would like to wish Ms
Clear all the best and thank her for the dedication that
she has shown to her students and for her efforts in all
aspects of classroom and whole school practice. You
will be missed by all!
Year 12 have been revising hard and will continue to
seek advice and feedback from their teachers
throughout the holidays. This week they managed to
revise by participating in some interesting ways:
Congratulations and farewell Year 12 from the English/
HSIE staff. We wish you all the best for the upcoming
exams and your future endeavours.
Maths/Music/LOTE Report
Mr Taylor’s Puzzle 1 Solution
Barham High School Diligence & Integrity
Mr Taylor’s Newsletter Puzzle 2 Three people check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 as a tip for himself. Each guest got $1 back, so now each guest only paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. And $27 + $2 = $29 so, if the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?
LOTE
During LOTE in Week 9, Year 7 went on a fun scavenger hunt around the school (scholae!). The class followed directions, written in Latin, and found a mystery prize at the end! The boys and girls showed what good Latin students (discipuli) they were, by using their knowledge of Latin root words to translate the directions into English. It was a simple process, since Latin is at the base of so many of our English words. As one student said afterwards, Latin is far from a dead language! Well done Year 7.
Science/Vis Arts/Careers Report
Recyclable Materials
Year 7 are on the hunt for recyclable materials for their
Science Projects. They are after containers, bottles, milk
cartons, cardboard, cardboard tubes and other
materials to construct toys. Unfortunately, we cannot
accept toilet rolls. Please send any donations to school
with your child by Week 1 next term. Thanks for your
help!
Grampians
A reminder to Stage 5 students that final payment
for this excursion is required by the end of term,
along with any outstanding permission notes.
Any questions or concerns need to be discussed
with Mrs Farrant and parents or guardians
requiring financial assistance are to contact the

STEM Excursion
In Week 8, 34 students, along with Mrs Farrant, Mr
Wren and Miss Dennis, headed off to Canberra to get
their STEM on. The Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics Careers Roadtrip gave students the
opportunity to check out some of Australia’s leading
research institutions, tour educational centres and just
generally have the opportunity to nerd-out for a few
days.
Highlights included making our own earthquake at
GeoScience Australia (which truly rocked), finally finding
out what an Arboretum was and checking out the
bonsais, having the run of Questacon and the vertical
slide, making some complex marble runs, learning
about some amazing discoveries made by the CSIRO in
our backyard and having tours of gravitational wave
labs, particle accelerators and playing with lasers at the
Australian National University.
We certainly packed in a whole heap of nerd-ventures
into our three days and it was a very quiet bus trip
home with some sleepy students! A big thank you to
our legendary students for their enthusiasm, support
and exceptional behaviour on the trip – it was such a
delight to see them so engaged in all the activities and
to see their faces as they problem-solved, asked and
answered questions and had their minds blown!
Thanks to Inspiring Australia who helped to make this
dream a reality by supporting our students to attend -
this once in a lifetime opportunity would’ve been
impossible otherwise!
Project 101
(Before shot)
Our team of years 7, 8 and 9 boys have been busy
making over the garden area near the BBQ courtyard.
As part of this project, students toured a nursery, spoke
with the owner, picked out plants that were
appropriate for their area, went on a field trip to
Koondrook Outdoors, did some scale map drawing and
measuring, put the plant boxes in, levelled, planted out
and laid all of the woodchips down.
Now the students are working on artworks to go in the
garden beds around the school, starting with a large
scale Murray Cod inspired piece.
Barham High School Diligence & Integrity
The project would not have been successful without the
support of our community. Thanks to Kaine at
Koondrook Outdoors who spent some time talking to
the boys about their ideas for their rustic, found object
sculptures. Thanks also to Keith from Wandin’s Sand
and Soil for his donation of 2m₃ of premium soil and
delivered for free. Thanks to the staff of J&R Cooke
Mitre 10 for helping with our endless questions. Thanks
to Jai Rhodes, Michelle McNeil and Raelene Farrant
(and the Farrant family) for donation of rustic metal
parts for the fish. Thanks to our trusty G.A’s Mr Drake
and Mr Skate for your welding expertise. Finally, thanks
to the participants for all of their interest and hard
work.
P.S We are on the hunt for steel horse shoes for the
middle of our Cod sculpture- if you have some to
donate, could you please drop them into the General
Assistant’s shed.
SRC Report
Term 3 Wrap up
It’s been a big term for the SRC, with many different
fund-raising projects completed and some big ideas
coming for Term 4. Earlier this term we supported the
Captain Courageous Foundations “My Hero Day” with
the students dressing as their favourite heroes for a
gold coin donation. We also held a BBQ to raise money
for this worthy cause.
Last week we ran a lunch time café. We sold milkshakes
and homemade goodies from the school hall, and also
ran a very popular Bingo competition. It was awesome
that so many students supported their SRC and we can’t
wait to organise the next event.
We came together to celebrate the contribution of our
Year 12 students this week. Thanks to Andrew, Jorja,
Mikayla and Sam for their excellent leadership and
good luck from all of us with your exams! Mikayla, Jorja
and Andrew have been absolute legends of the SRC
over the past few years, and it’s been fantastic to watch
their leadership skills develop. Well done girls on your
commitment and enthusiasm for bettering your school
for your peers, we wish you all the very best for the
future.
As always, the SRC is about making our school an even
better place to be, and we welcome all ideas and
suggestions. Thanks for supporting us to use our voices
to make change happen!
