Saul loved God, but he was mad at people who loved and followed Jesus. Saul didn’t understand that Jesus was God’s Son.

He asked the High Priest, the most important leader at the Temple, for permission to go to Damascus and catch Jesus’ followers. Saul thought

God would be pleased with him for doing that.

As Saul was going along the road to Damascus, suddenly a very bright light shone down from heaven. Saul was so frightened that he fell down on the ground.

Then Saul heard a voice from heaven saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” To persecute means to treat someone cruelly or unfairly

because of what they believe.

It was Jesus Himself who spoke to Saul. “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.” He gently said, “But get up and go into the city where you will be told what to do.”

When the light was gone Saul couldn’t see anything. The people who were with him didn’t know what had happened.

His experience with Jesus changed Saul. Love for Jesus filled his heart. He wanted everyone to know about Jesus. To show how much he had changed, God will

change his name to Paul.
