The Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business Committee announces the eighth annual Ag Gala to be held Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Riverfront Event Center, 121 W. Third St. The Ag Gala has be- come the signature event in the Greater Yankton Area to pro- mote and recognize the agricul- tural industry, area ag producers and their importance to our economy. Beginning at 5 p.m. guests will be able to sample wines from three wineries: Nissen Win- ery, Hartington, Neb.; Valiant Winery, Vermillion; and White Headed Robin, Viborg. During this time, vendors will have booths showcasing their prod- ucts, services and relationships with the Ag community. At 6:45 p.m. the social hour will be fol- lowed by dinner with The South Dakota Cattlemen”s Association as the major sponsor with beef sirloin being the featured entrée prepared by HyVee. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. with South Dakota Lt. Gov. Matt Michels as the Master of Ceremonies. The Promoting Agricultural Youth (PAY) Schol- arship recipients will be an- nounced and recognized for their achievement. The P.A.Y. Scholarship Endowment was created to financially assist a high school senior in the Yank- ton area that wanted to pursue post-secondary education in the related fields of agriculture. Due to the success of the Ag Gala P.A.Y. auction over the past sev- eral years, four $3,500 scholar- ships will be awarded this year. A live auction by auctioneer Greg Ryken of Yankton Livestock Auction Market will follow these awards. The auction consists of donated items to help continue to secure funds for the P.A.Y. program.. The Agri-Business Committee will honor the 2013 Farm Family of the Year at the gala. Past win- ners include: Robert and Mari- lyn Lyngstad Family, Jim and Sharon Petrik Family, Dave Dvo- racek Family, Dale Bye, Luther and Joan Nielson, Robert Hauger Family, Robert and Julie Walloch Family, Henry and Jeanette Zimmerman, Phillip and Charlene Bennett Family, Randy and Val Svendsen Family, Susan and John Goeken Family, Frank and Jolene Kralick Family, Dennis and Peg Michel Family, Grant and Carol Reade Family and Sylliaasen Farms. The selec- tion of the Farm Family is based on the following criteria: • Families must be active in agricultural production of live- stock and/or crop and is their main source of income. • They must show commu- nity involvement whether through civic organizations, school, sports or church. • They must be involved in agricultural industry organiza- tions whether it is local, state and/or federal plus the overall farm family image, farming his- tory and unique or special pro- duction is taken into consideration. This year’s keynote speaker is Amy Kirk. Her program, “Con- necting With People Through Agriculture and Humor,” will share how in her search for top- ics for her column A Ranch- wife”s Slant, she has inadvertently learned that find- ing humor in unpleasant situa- tions can be a coping tool for dealing with the daily challenges as well as industry wide chal- lenges that pertain to agricul- ture. Kirk is a ranch wife on a cow-calf operation near Pringle. She has a passion for agricul- ture, the outdoors, and writes weekly humor columns about the ranching experience with her husband and kids. Ag Gala tickets can be pur- chased until June 11.
