He needed a seasoned and successful manager to run the Washington Nationals, a promising team shocked by the abrupt resignation of Jim Riggleman. He didn’t have to look far. Davey Johnson, who had been advising Rizzo since 2009, was the logical choice since he was already familiar with the team’s operations, the players and Rizzo himself. The 68-year-old Johnson, who led the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title and had managed four big league teams, is returning to the dugout. The official announce- ment came Sunday. Johnson will run the Nationals for the first time Monday when they start an interleague series against the Los Angeles Angels and stay on as manager through the rest of the sea- son. “Davey’s a perfect fit for this job at this particular time,” Rizzo said. “He’s a guy with a track record that’s beyond reproach. He knows the system, he knows the staff, he knows the major league club and he’s a terrific baseball guy and a proved winning manager.” Davey Johnson Takes Over As Nationals Manager Monday, June 27 BASEBALL, LEGION Vermillion at Yankton (DH, 5:30 p.m.) BASEBALL, VFW TEENER Yankton Lakers at South Sioux City (DH, 4 p.m.) Tuesday, June 28 BASEBALL, AMATEUR Scotland at Wynot (7:30 p.m.) BASEBALL, VFW TEENER Tabor at Yankton Reds (DH, 2 p.m.) SOFTBALL, GIRLS’ Yankton Lightning at Vermillion Wednesday, June 29 BASEBALL, AMATEUR Vermillion Grey Sox at Canton (7:30 p.m.) BASEBALL, LEGION Yankton at Mitchell; Yankton vs. Pierre at Mitchell BASEBALL, VFW TEENER Yankton Black Sox at Mitchell (DH, 5 p.m.); S.F. Practices will be held on Monday evenings, with one scheduled Wednes- day practice, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Practices will begin at the softball fields near the Summit Ac- tivities Center with a move to Sertoma after Riverboat Days. Please wear your tennis shoes, bring your ball gloves and be on time. Athletes must participate in all practices in order to participate in the State Softball Tournament. Excused absences are for work, family, sickness, injury or scheduled vacation. Other excused ab- sences may be made on a case-by-case basis. In order to have enough hours to participate in the State Tournament, we must try to hold all scheduled practices. I know that heat can be a factor, but we are very careful to take more water breaks and have less strenuous practices on the very hot days, so please try to participate in all practices. Firecracker Run-Walk July 2 SPRINGFIELD — The annual Springfield Firecracker 5K run or 1-mile walk will be held on Sat- urday, July 2, at 9 a.m. in downtown Springfield. Registration will be held from 8-8:45 a.m. inside Club Fit (located behind Doug’s Food Center on Main Street). The race will begin west of First Savings Bank on Main Street. Trophies will be presented to the top two qualifiers in each division. Division are as follows: 25- under, 26-34, 35-44 and 45-older, with men and women separate. For more information, contact Chris or Craig Libis at 605-369-2110 or email [email protected]. Youth Soccer Registration Going On This Month Yankton Youth Soccer is holding fall registration from June 1-30. All high school and fall recre- ational players must register. Registrations may be found online at yanktonsoccer.com, at the public library or the Summit Ac- tivities Center. For more information, contact Betty at 661-3362. SPORTS BRIEFS director Jeremy Foley wanted a program that would be competitive year in and year out. O’Sullivan said a team has to get lots of breaks to be in position to play for a national title. “It was all about consistency and being one of the elite programs in the country,” he said. “I’ve never put a timetable on it. This league is too difficult. I think if you get too far ahead of yourself and look too far ahead, then you’ll find yourself in some trouble.” Zunino, Randall, shortstop Nolan Fontana and third baseman Cody Dent were among the fresh- men on the 2010 team that reached the College World Series for the first time since 2005. Preston Tucker, who has a home run and team-leading six RBIs in the College World Series, said last year’s 0-2 finish in Omaha left him and his teammates hungry for more. “We had a different mindset coming in this year,” Tucker said. “Last year was the first time for all the guys getting here, and I guess it was a little overwhelming. I know it was for me. But I think everyone’s playing a little more comfortable, more relaxed this year, knowing that we have been there before.” Starting pitching was South Car- olina’s biggest question coming into the season. Roth, who came out of the bullpen most of last season, has turned into one of the nation’s best starters. Colby Holmes has over- come a hand injury the second half of last season to become a depend- able starter. Koumas showed he could do the job when he allowed one run in six innings in his first ca- reer start, at Florida. “We really haven’t been an im- posing team,” Tanner said. “And not to discount my guys or any- thing like that, we’re not a team that can throw a crooked number on you. We have to pitch and play defense and stay in the game and win one late.” Florida and South Carolina won three straight to reach the finals. The Gators followed an 8-4 victory over Texas with wins of 3-1 and 6-4 over Vanderbilt. South Carolina, which has won a record 14 straight NCAA tourna- ment games, has wins of 5-4 over Texas A&M and 7-1 and 3-2 over Virginia, the latter in 13 innings. Last year, the Gamecocks won six straight after losing their Col- lege World Series opener. They won the title game against UCLA on their last at-bat, and this year two of their three wins have come in walkoff fashion. “I don’t know if we amaze our- selves,” second baseman Scott Wingo said, “because we just go out there and we fight every in- ning. “I’d say getting (to) back-to- back national championships is pretty amazing.” Yankton Transmission Specialists Specialists (605) 665-1175 2409 East Highway 50 • Transmissions • Drive Lines • Transfer Cases • Differentials 2 Year / 24,000 Guarantee CWS From Page 8 Install a new Heating & Cooling System this Spring and SAVE up to HEATING & COOLING 920 Broadway • 665-9461 • 1-800-491-9461 $ 2800 $ 2800 Turn to the Experts™ with Tax Credits, Manufacturer Rebates & Utility Rebates Hurry! Hinseth had a two-run home run, a triple and a single to lead the Spitfire. Also for Yankton, Hannah Horn had three hits, including a double. Abby Schulte doubled and singled, driving in one. Karlee Kozak also had two hits. Jessica Wirth doubled and Katie Koletzky singled in the win. Koletzky struck out five to pick up the win. YELLOW JACKETS 8, EMERY 4: Becky Frick struck out eight batters in five innings as Yankton doubled up Emery. Frick also had three hits. Heather Hauer, Morgan Rothschadl, Alicia Gregoire and Ellen Andersen added hits. Softball From Page 8 Hillcrest members came in first and second,” Cindy Weiland said. “We really appreciate the event sponsored by the SDGA. We enjoy going to other golf courses and it’s just a great time for everybody.” The couple wanted to shoot in the high 70s or replay the 80 from the first round, but the pair scored an 81 on day two. Despite the win, the couple said they didn’t hit the ball extremely well this weekend. “The rounds were very similar,” Steve Weiland said. “We didn’t hit a lot greens in regulation. We chipped and putted well, when we had to.” It was a small field for the Sen- ior Division this season, but Steve Weiland thinks that will quickly change. “The first year the turnout was moderate,” he said. “Hopefully, there is double the field and it will bigger and better next year.” The runner-up was decided by a tiebreaker, as 12-year Husband- Wife Tournament veterans Steve and YaVonne Slowey beat out Keel and Patty Coddington by shooting an 80 in the second round. “We didn’t think that we would be anywhere close to their (Cod- dingtons) score,” YaVonne Slowey chuckled. “It was extremely sur- prising to get runner-up.” Shooting an 80 marked a better performance on the course for the Sloweys, as the pair shot an 83 in the opening round. According to the couple, the course didn’t play much different, but were able to double bogey free golf. “We had four double bogeys the first day,” Steve Slowey said. “Our was not to have double bogeys. We did have one triple, but we played really well.” “We played a little bit better than we are,” he added jokingly. Steve and Yavonne didn’t ex- pect to be in this position at the end of the day two, but we humbly surprise to find out they won a piece of hardware. “We were pretty proud, we got two shots with Weilands,” Steve Slowey said. “They are both good players and for us to get close to them, we’re pretty happy. “We are going to add on a room to the house to put our trophy in.” Golf From Page 8 JOIN US ON FACEBOOK T HE GREAT AMERICAN P AINTING P ARTY Plus, 30 % OFF * Hooked on Walls wallcovering J UNE 26 th J ULY 4 th PAINTS & STAINS 30 % OFF * S ON JOIN U US NO IN OME C CEBOOK A N F FA ! CHICAGO (AP) — General manager Mike Rizzo had to move quickly. He needed aseasoned and successful manager to run the Washington Nationals, a promising teamshocked by the abrupt resignation of Jim Riggleman.

He didn’t have to look far.Davey Johnson, who had been advising Rizzo since 2009, was the logical choice since

he was already familiar with the team’s operations, the players and Rizzo himself. The 68-year-old Johnson, who led the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title

and had managed four big league teams, is returning to the dugout. The official announce-ment came Sunday.

Johnson will run the Nationals for the first time Monday when they start an interleague

series against the Los Angeles Angels and stay on as manager through the rest of the sea-son.

“Davey’s a perfect fit for this job at this particular time,” Rizzo said. “He’s a guy with atrack record that’s beyond reproach. He knows the system, he knows the staff, he knowsthe major league club and he’s a terrific baseball guy and a proved winning manager.”

director Jeremy Foley wanted aprogram that would be competitiveyear in and year out. O’Sullivansaid a team has to get lots ofbreaks to be in position to play fora national title.

“It was all about consistencyand being one of the elite programsin the country,” he said. “I’ve neverput a timetable on it. This league istoo difficult. I think if you get toofar ahead of yourself and look toofar ahead, then you’ll find yourselfin some trouble.”

Zunino, Randall, shortstopNolan Fontana and third basemanCody Dent were among the fresh-men on the 2010 team that reachedthe College World Series for thefirst time since 2005.

Preston Tucker, who has ahome run and team-leading sixRBIs in the College World Series, said last year’s 0-2 finish in Omahaleft him and his teammates hungryfor more.

“We had a different mindsetcoming in this year,” Tucker said.“Last year was the first time for allthe guys getting here, and I guess itwas a little overwhelming. I know itwas for me. But I think everyone’splaying a little more comfortable, more relaxed this year, knowingthat we have been there before.”

Starting pitching was South Car-olina’s biggest question coming

into the season.Roth, who came out of the

bullpen most of last season, hasturned into one of the nation’s beststarters. Colby Holmes has over-come a hand injury the second halfof last season to become a depend-able starter. Koumas showed hecould do the job when he allowedone run in six innings in his first ca-reer start, at Florida.

“We really haven’t been an im-posing team,” Tanner said. “Andnot to discount my guys or any-thing like that, we’re not a teamthat can throw a crooked numberon you. We have to pitch and playdefense and stay in the game andwin one late.”

Florida and South Carolina wonthree straight to reach the finals. The Gators followed an 8-4 victoryover Texas with wins of 3-1 and 6-4over Vanderbilt.

South Carolina, which has wona record 14 straight NCAA tourna-ment games, has wins of 5-4 overTexas A&M and 7-1 and 3-2 overVirginia, the latter in 13 innings.

Last year, the Gamecocks wonsix straight after losing their Col-lege World Series opener. Theywon the title game against UCLA ontheir last at-bat, and this year twoof their three wins have come inwalkoff fashion.

“I don’t know if we amaze our-selves,” second baseman ScottWingo said, “because we just goout there and we fight every in-ning.

“I’d say getting (to) back-to-back national championships ispretty amazing.”

Hillcrest members came in firstand second,” Cindy Weiland said.“We really appreciate the eventsponsored by the SDGA. We enjoygoing to other golf courses and it’sjust a great time for everybody.”

The couple wanted to shoot inthe high 70s or replay the 80 fromthe first round, but the pair scoredan 81 on day two. Despite the win,the couple said they didn’t hit theball extremely well this weekend.

“The rounds were very similar,”Steve Weiland said. “We didn’t hit alot greens in regulation. Wechipped and putted well, when wehad to.”

It was a small field for the Sen-ior Division this season, but SteveWeiland thinks that will quicklychange.

“The first year the turnout wasmoderate,” he said. “Hopefully, there is double the field and it willbigger and better next year.”

The runner-up was decided by atiebreaker, as 12-year Husband-Wife Tournament veterans Steve

and YaVonne Slowey beat out Keeland Patty Coddington by shootingan 80 in the second round.

“We didn’t think that we wouldbe anywhere close to their (Cod-dingtons) score,” YaVonne Sloweychuckled. “It was extremely sur-prising to get runner-up.”

Shooting an 80 marked a betterperformance on the course for theSloweys, as the pair shot an 83 inthe opening round. According tothe couple, the course didn’t playmuch different, but were able todouble bogey free golf.

“We had four double bogeys thefirst day,” Steve Slowey said. “Ourwas not to have double bogeys. Wedid have one triple, but we playedreally well.”

“We played a little bit betterthan we are,” he added jokingly.

Steve and Yavonne didn’t ex-pect to be in this position at theend of the day two, but we humblysurprise to find out they won apiece of hardware.

“We were pretty proud, we gottwo shots with Weilands,” SteveSlowey said. “They are both goodplayers and for us to get close tothem, we’re pretty happy.

“We are going to add on a roomto the house to put our trophy in.”
