Gonna Fly Now
Words and Music by Bill Conti, Ayn Robbins and Carol Connors.
Arranged by Victor Lopez
Also known as the Theme from Rocky, the song was
released in 1977. It was considered a perfect fit for the movie
and for the Rocky character - an underdog who fought beyond
his abilities through rugged determination. It was used as the
primary theme in the first two Rocky movies. The song was
nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Route 66
Words and Music by Bobby Troup
Arranged by Michael Sweeney
A popular rhythm and blues standard, the song was composed in
1946. The song uses a twelve-bar blues arrangement and lyrics
follow the path of US Federal Highway, Route 66.
Skyfall
Words and Music by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth
Arranged by Roger Holmes
Skyfall is the theme song of the 2012 James Bond film of the
same name, performed by English singer Adele. While composing
the song, Adele and Epworth aimed to capture the mood and
style of the other Bond themes, including dark and moody lyrics
descriptive of the film's plot.
Uptown Funk
Words and Music by Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Phillip Lawrence,
Jeff Bhasker, Devon Gallaspy and Nicholas Williams
Arranged by John Berry
Uptown Funk is heavily influenced by a hybrid mixture
of funk, rock, pop and new wave of the early 1980s. The song
set a new record for the highest number of streams in one week
in the US, with 4.8 million streams. Recently, the video received
its billionth view on YouTube becoming the ninth video on
YouTube to receive over 1 billion views.

Words and Music by Steely Dan
Arranged by Mike Tomaro
Steely Dan is an American jazz rock band whose music also
blends elements of funk, R&B, and pop. Founded by core
members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972, the band
enjoyed great critical and commercial success in the late
‘70s and early ‘80s before breaking up in 1981. Josie is the
sardonic celebration of a prodigal daughter's return.
Georgia on My Mind
Words and Music by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell
Arranged by Sammy Nestico
Hoagland Howard Hoagy Carmichael was born in
Bloomington, Indiana in 1899. He is one of the few great
craftsmen who became the most important jazz innovators
in the first half of the 20th century. Carmichael was an actor,
performer, and popular songwriter - some of his other
compositions include Stardust and Winter Moon. Gorrell was
a banker living in New York City, and he wrote the
lyrics. It is one of the most recorded songs of all time and
became the official state song of the State of Georgia, USA
in 1979.
Sweet Georgia Brown
Words and Music by Ben Bernie
Arranged by Sammy Nestico
Sweet Georgia Brown is a jazz standard and pop tune
written in 1925. Reportedly Ben Bernie came up with the
concept for the song's lyrics, although he is not the
accredited lyricist. The tune was first recorded in 1925 by
bandleader Bernie, resulting in a five-week No. 1.

Symphony No. 1 in D Major (The Titan) 3rd Movement
Composed by Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, also known as the ‘Titan’ symphony,
was primarily composed between the 20th January and the end of March 1888 in
Leipzig, although the work also incorporates pre-existing musical themes and ideas
from earlier Mahler compositions.
The first version of the work, premiered in 1889 at the Vigadó Concert Hall in
Budapest conducted by Mahler. The work was poorly received by the Budapest
audience. Its second performance took place three years later in Hamburg after
Mahler had made major revisions to the work. Mahler continued to revise the work
up until the score was first published in 1899. A typical performance lasts around 55
minutes, making it one of Mahler’s shortest symphonies. Tonight, GCYO’s Youth
Symphony perform the 3rd Movement.
Pictures at an Exhibition - The Hut on Chicken Legs and The Great Gate of
Kiev
Composed by Modest Mussorgsky
Orchestrated by Carl Simpson
Modest Mussorgsky produced his Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874 to perpetuate the
memory of a friend, Viktor Hartmann (1834-1873). In the process, he created a
monument far more massive and lasting than his subject. Mussorgsky was an
ardent Russian nationalist, but he was far more interested in folk art than in the
grandiose ornamental designs of the aristocracy. (Or, as Tchaikovsky put it, “He
likes what is coarse, unpolished and ugly.”)
Mussorgsky's career began in the military, but he resigned from the life of a
fastidious officer to study music and supported himself as a civil servant. When his
friend Hartmann died in 1874, aged only 39, Mussorgsky was devastated. The
following year a memorial exhibit of 400 of Hartmann’s works, including sketches,
watercolours and costume designs was created. Seized with inspiration, Mussorgsky
quickly reacted to the exhibition by writing a suite of ten piano pieces dedicated to
the organizer. Tonight, Youth Symphony present No. 9.
