Chair Chat League action for three teams on Saturday saw a narrow loss for the Ladies 1sts, an ugly win for the Old Boars and a loss to the PMs. Friendly action elsewhere as the rest of the ladies section played each other ahead of their Middlesex league programme starting on Saturday. The men still have two weeks to go before the South league starts but the intensity is building. A good crowd watching the two first teams in action and I caught the last 25 mins of the men’s game in a pulsating encounter with Slough. After that it was an umpire assessment session (well done Nicola) and a quick meeting. After that the rest of the day was mine.
I enjoyed a lovely cup of coffee at Anita’s tuck shop at Colts on Sunday mornings but resisted the chocolate bars that were tempting me. Anita has set up a tea/coffee/biscuits table up at the pitch for Sunday morning’s parents and colts. Do make sure you support this fantastic new initiative and I hope we can make this a permanent feature.
Chris Akhurst has been busy with some more website updates – Colts fixtures now feature. Please have a look and feel free to suggest changes and improvements you would like to see.
I am delighted we have a new and active social committee and they met on Saturday to plan the events for the year. We are looking at more regular events and they have some new ideas that I am sure will bring more people attending this year.
The Company AGM is on Saturday 1st October. This
is the formal AGM we have to hold and will elect the directors and senior management, approve the accounts and confirm this year’s subs and match fees. All subject to a democratic vote of course. One plea from me – you have heard it before – is someone willing to step up to take on the Marketing and PR role. Please help to fill this role. Let me know if you can help.
We are now ready to authorise the final works on the clubhouse refurb following the flood in respect of the badminton hall and entrance floors following the approval from our insurers so I am hoping we will be all done by mid October.
The Saints have won three games since I last wrote my column and no goals conceded. My Europa prediction was I am pleased to say wrong – they won 3-0 not 2-1! This was followed by 3 points against Swansea and then into the last 16 of the League Cup. Rob

Ladies 1’s v Wycombe Rye 1’s Saturday 17th September 2016 Lost 1 -2
A Wry Start The league season didn’t start quite the way the Ladies
1s had hoped with a 2-1 loss at home to Wycombe. The
game started out fairly evenly with Eastcote having the
balance of D entries but failing to convert. Shortly before
the half time break Wycombe were rewarded for their
persistent break through efforts with an excellent reverse
stick tap in from a crash ball across.
The start second half saw Eastcote controlling
possession and creating a lot of opportunities. After
about the 6th short corner a straight strike from Macca hit
the right post and rolled across the line for a goal (even if
the opposition defence were adamant that it hadn’t
crossed the line…) The level game was short lived
however as a lapse in concentration saw Eastcote
overrun at the back allowing an unmarked Wycombe
player to put the ball in at short range.
The team tried to rally but couldn’t quite get back to
positive play and almost conceded a third when a goal
was awarded (through the same back post tap in) but the
player admitted she had kicked it and the goal was
overturned.
Eastcote looked like they may be able to salvage a draw
with another string of corners towards the very end of the
game but unfortunately none were able to find their way
past the Wycombe defence and the game ended in a
loss.
MOM was Josie for an outstanding game at the back.
She showed the composure and strength that we need to
have as a team in order to progress well throughout the
rest of the season. My personal highlight of the game
was when Josie backed her skills so much that she
literally walked past two of the Wycombe players. Well,
why put in more effort than you have to…
We face Milton Keynes away this weekend and will be
looking to put in a strong showing and get some points
on the board.
Ladies 2’s v Ladies 3’s Saturday 17th September Won 2 - 1
A Letter from Amrskp Dear Reader,
It was with both anticipation and apprehension that the
Two's and Coach met in the ladies changing room
(Coops much preferred the Ladies to the Men’s FYI,
something to do with the smell I believe, or lack of it), our
second friendly and the last before league starts, an
important game to a) impress the coach b) consolidate
the system c) discuss whether Brad really is a poor
parent and whether you would rather have Angelina as
your mum or Brad as your dad (this last is not entirely
true as the "news" about Brangelina only broke yesterday
but it might serve as a topic for debate before this week’s
games for those teams who have little to say to each
other, not a particular problem for the ladies 2's) d) be
aware of the significant challenge that our opponents
(The Mighty Three's) would pose, who doesn't like an
interclub fixture? (me, I don't).
Anyway, we had a stirring talk from Coach, a slightly
random warm up and the game started; part of the
strategy had been to pack the midfield with myself and
Pen being a closely positioned unit at the centre, this was
a grand plan and worked quite brilliantly for just over 46
seconds at which point Pen retired hurt having played an
absolute blinder (I believe she had touched the ball) and
taking the adage "quit when you're still at the top "
somewhat too far.
She has claimed subsequently to have scored a reverse
strike top corner goal, cruelly attempting to capitalise on
my generally poor recall regarding what actually happens
during matches (which FYI is precisely why I shouldn't
write match reports..) however I don't believe that this
happened, please speak to Pen if you want further
clarification or contact her on her Twitter handle
#donttrustherjustafantasist
The Mighty Three's were swift to capitalise on our
Captains early retirement and launched several excellent
attacks driving down their left through Leanne , Tonia and
getting the ball to the ever alert Lucy who got several
great strikes goalward leaving Jane to keep us in the
game whilst we slowly sorted ourselves out .
Anyway, the threes played well, with some sterling stuff
from Booky and Leanne in defence and Emma, Tonia
and Nic in midfield and Lucy an ever present threat up
front, but we managed to put them under increasing
pressure.
Nat and her mother combined well on the right, Bobby
and Elspeth were rock solid on the left and Lucy, Sofie,
Freya and Emily worked hard both creatively and
defensively on the front line.
It was 0-0 at half time ( Coach largely unimpressed) , 2-1
at full time (Coach marginally happier) ...I am reliably
informed that our scorers were tireless Bobby and
relentless Sofie , I'm not sure but I think that Lucy might
have scored the 3's goal ??
Anyway it was a well contested game, the 3's played
really well, we sneaked a win, Eye and Des thanks for
umpiring so calmly, and we are all still friends.....apart
from those 3's player who are arachnophobic and may
not have been too impressed with Pen releasing the
spider found in our changing room into theirs...
Yours etc

Men’s 1’s v Slough 1’s Saturday 17th September Won 3 – 2
Red Devils So I get home early Friday night and thought I will start
the dinner before Doris comes home.
All going well and I even got a couple of laps in on F1
Then Doris comes....
So I have cooked dinner would you like to try it?
Doris: that’s nice
Me: I know I cooked it....are you hungry?
Doris : not at the moment..
Me: ok I am going for a shower then we will have dinner
when the football starts
Doris: ok
I then come out the shower, shorts and t shirt on ready
for dinner............then
I have a look in the pot of chilli.............
Me : what are the red things in my chilli
Doris: I have add some flavour
Me: what *%$£ red baby tomatoes...I f*&^%% hate
them.
I know chilli has tomatoes in.....but not the little baby
once. I hate the taste and sight of them.
Doris: I will fish them out THEN
Me: why why why do you have to get add to my food all
the time
Doris : its only baby tomatoes....why are you getting so
angry
Me: ok then that’s it its going out the f@@@@ng window
Doris what??????????
I then got the chilli and begun to throw the chilli out the
window on to the neighbours patio(sorry mark)
Doris : well that’s clever
Me: clever, I give you clever....don’t add baby tomatoes
to my food that I have cooked.
Doris : tell me about it....drama queen
We did not talk until Saturday night.
But on the plus side we beat slough 3-2 in our 2nd
friendly
- shame half of them are vegetarian otherwise I would
have thrown it at them!
Anyway that was my Friday night and I am really looking
forward to this Friday night as I m cooking again.
Past Masters v Sevenoaks Supervets Saturday 17th September Lost 5(3) – 1(0)
. . . ominous start The PM’s faced a long haul around the congested M25
on Saturday and it was not the best preparation to face a
lively Sevenoaks squad who had spent the morning over
leisurely cappuccinos and pastries.
The PM’s fielded a squad of 13 but were carrying a
couple of injuries, the line-up was basically the same as
last year but clearly we had lost some of the old
positional sense and were under early pressure from a
lively home team but Addy, Sukhi, Gav and H managed
to stop/intercept/disrupt their attacking play for the first
quarter and Tim, Dogra and Buddy were getting into
good attacking positions up front.
With 20 minutes gone we suffered a couple of mental
lapses and allowed a free player deep into our “D” on
their right wing – not good as the resultant cross was play
away from the keeper to a spare man at the back for a
couple of soft goals from very similar moves. We were
also under pressure from short corners but held firm and
even had a couple ourselves but both keepers saved
comfortably, although Buddy, L and Lloydy all had half
chances. Just prior to halftime the PMs conceded from
the 3rd
short in a row to wrap up an ineffectual 1st half.
After the break we fared much better with Raj, Pali,
Dogra and Tim getting closer together in the middle and
being able to maintain possession. We forced a couple
of short corners before the Sevenoaks defence failed to
stop a goal bound shot illegally (a foot on the line) and
Buddy stepped up to take his 1st flick of the season. The
keeper “gave him the eye” and left lots of space on his
stick side – Buddy fell for it and the keeper made a great
stick stop down at the foot of his post.
The PM’s weren’t to be denied their goal though and
shortly after we had another short which this time was
lifted into the net by Dogra during the 3rd
phase of play.
Alas it transpires to be too little too late and as we
pushed up to try to redress the balance we were caught
on the break and conceded another short from which a
good goal was scored with a deflected shot. In the last
10 minutes the home team extended their lead when
outnumbering the PM defence by 5 to 2 to put the icing
on their cake and score the 5th goal.
MotM this week is not that easy, all 13 players put their
all into the game and luck was not with us (short corner
count Sevenoaks 15 to PMs 3) but for his solid consistent
performance throughout it goes to Sukhi.

Eagles v Ramgharia Slough Saturday 17th September Lost 0 - Less than 8
A Deflector The first outing for the Eagles in the 2016/7 season was
a eagerly anticipated affair. With 3 not available till the
8th October and one even later, clearly the anticipation
was too much for them. However as usual the new
season brings a new batch of colts with two new boys
joining us for this first game Matt and Sherwin, both
played really well and settled into the team very quickly.
The game started well with some great hockey Ash and
Childsy connected well and gave great service to Matt
and Rob H up front who had some great shots at goal,
Surenga also played very well moving the ball effectively
up the pitch and feeding the forwards. Geoff made some
awesome saves coming off his line and threatening the
forwards well….. "Hang on I thought Z was the Eagles
keeper?..” I hear you say, you are right Z was, Geoff
agreed to play for the opposition and was extremely
effective as keeping us out!!
We made quite a few forays into the opposition D with
Geoff saving at least 5 great shots. As the 1st half wore
on the opposition started to penetrate the Eagles half but
the defence managed to keep the opposition out of the
goal with Laz, Mikey and Mr Chairman working well in the
D and connecting well with Sherwin Z also made some
great saves, but a goal slipped in off Zs hand pads. This
broke the deadlock and the attacks seem to come more
and more frequently, the defence and keeper kept a lot
out but 4 more goals were conceded in the 1st half.
At half time the usual team talk was accompanied with
Jelly babies and guidance for Geoff to stay on his line.
Which he ignored!
At the end of the game the opposition captain
approached me reassuringly and stated that if they had
their regular keeper the score line would have been 6-6.
We shall see as we have a return match with the same
opposition at the Wrexham fortress in Slough, clearly
there will be more new colts plus some guests as some
of the regular Eagles have not worked out that the
hockey season has started.
So stay tuned for part 2 next week.

Old Boars v Richmond Vets Saturday 17th September Won 2-1
Old Boers No More The pre-match build up to the Old Boars’ inaugural game
of the 2016-17 campaign was dominated by the news
that our two ancient SAFFAs had packed their bags and
scarpered. After 3 memorable years, Messrs Jackson
and Pell have decided to wander off into the Veldt,
perhaps never to return, to hunt new game – they also
had some weak excuse about reducing their match-day
commute.
I’d like to go on record and tell you all what fantastic
team mates they’ve both been and how much they’ve
contributed to the emergence of the Old Boars’ story…I’d
like to…but sadly, it wouldn’t be true!
Of course, I jest. We will certainly miss these two Old
Boers; with their tough(mostly illegal) tackling, their
umpire baiting and their fusty, Manning-esque opinions.
But we definitely won’t miss the faint aroma of urine that
was starting to permeate the changing room.
As if by some divine, providential force, the fixtures have
thrown up an instant opportunity for all his former
teammates to show Pelly the appreciation and respect he
deserves; Reading Rustlers visit Eastcote on
the 1st October. A word of advice…don’t forget your
shinnies, Pelly.
In the match against Richmond, the Old Boars
squandered numerous chances to kill off the opposition
in the first half and finally laboured to a 2-1 victory. The
goals came from a Mark Defanis flick and a Simon
Samuel short corner. We enjoy/need a rest week this
weekend.

As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy.
We have been supported by “Xenca“ for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it. General Information Children under the age of 6 can only take part in these Sunday morning sessions if they are accompanied at all times by their parent. Also, please ensure that your children do bring appropriate protective equipment, in particular, shin pads – mouth guards are recommended. I would also like to remind parents that on rare occasions due to other hockey commitments, we cannot always guarantee organised supervision for all our colts age groups during the Sunday morning slot at the Astroturf. In light of this, please, before leaving your child/children, ensure that the appropriate coaching staff are in attendance. In the event of your child not having supervision please enquire as to whether they might join another age group (child age and numbers permitting) or that failing this, assume that the session is not running and that your child will not be supervised. If this arises we cannot take responsibility for your child’s well-being. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience such situations may cause but despite having a committed and motivated coaching staff, it is not always possible to plan for the unexpected. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me. It is important that the coaches know whether your child is currently suffering from, has recently suffered from or developed any injury, illness or medical condition that may be affected by or affect their participation in hockey. Please also indicate here if your child is receiving medication with details and dosage, and / or has any specific dietary requirements. This information will be shared with coaches and other appropriate staff, therefore it is not confidential. Please ensure that if there are any changes to this information, managers / trainers are advised accordingly. CHILD PROTECTION POLICY Eastcote Hockey Club fully supports England Hockey Child Protection Policy. A copy of the clubs policy on this issue is on our website under the Colts section. We expect parents of those children aged under 8 to be present during coaching sessions. Parents/carers are advised that, at the end of each training session, they or a nominated responsible adult must promptly collect their child(ren) (under 11) from the pitches, as we do not want them to be unsupervised in the car park or Kings College Road. If a child is not collected after a training session or match, the coach(es) will contact the parents/carers on the telephone number(s) on the club's records. If the parents cannot be contacted, the coach(es) will not leave the child(ren) unsupervised and will, if necessary, advise the club's Child Protection Officer of the situation. When Colts teams attend away fixtures and tournaments, it is the parent's or carer's responsibility to make arrangements and ensure that their child(ren) has a lift to and from the other club and, if necessary, collection from Eastcote Hockey Club on their return. It is preferable that parents/carers attend matches and tournaments with their children, in particular u14s .When parents arrange for a third party to provide transport for their child(ren), they should inform the coach(es) before leaving Eastcote HC of the name of their child(ren) and the name and contact telephone numbers of both parties, so that they can be contacted if necessary, and the coach(es) should make a note of such arrangements and information. If it is not possible for such arrangements to be made for any given match or tournament, then Eastcote HC regrets that a child(ren) may not be able to attend the fixture/tournament, as the hockey club and the coach(es) cannot take responsibility for the child(ren)'s well-being. Please note: It is not the responsibility of Eastcote Hockey Club or the Eastcote coach(es) to act in loco parentis. The coach's role is to organise and manage the team(s) chosen to represent the hockey club. When taking a team to away fixtures and tournaments, the coach(es) should ensure that arrangements have been made so each child (not accompanied by their parent/carer and not travelling in the club's minibus - u14s/u16s) has a return lift to Eastcote HC. The clubs coaches will take photographs or video at some tournaments of the team and these may be published on the Clubs website. The consent form confirms your agreement to this , but if you have any questions or objections please let your coach know immediately. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR CHILDREN/PARENTS & CARERS/SPECTATORS Children Respect opponents Respect your fellow players Respect the Coaches Always be on time for coaching sessions and games Wear suitable kit and clothing –inc shinpads; gumshields are recommended Always bring along a drink – water or a sports drink
The EastcoNet 16 24th September 2016
Parents & Carers / Spectators Always encourage and support the children Always support coaches , officials and umpires in decisions Recognise and support fair play at all times Respect players and officials of other teams Junior Code of Conduct/Rules for Junior Players The aim of Eastcote Colts Section is to promote healthy participation in sport. It is hoped that everyone will play to the best of their ability and that teams are successful. However, we believe that it is more important to enjoy sport and play fairly. The following Code of Conduct and Rules have been written to uphold the aims of Eastcote HC and to help and protect all junior players, umpires, spectators and parents involved in the playing of hockey regardless of whether it is in league games, friendly matches, or training sessions The club believes that it is important that its members, coaches, administrators, volunteers and parents associated with the club should, at all times, show respect, be encouraged to be open and to share any concerns or complaints about any aspect of the club with the coach or the appropriate committee member. Each individual is accountable for his or her own actions. Whether you are playing, watching, coaching or umpiring any match, it is your personal responsibility to treat your own team, opposition players, coaches, spectators and the umpires with respect and consideration before, during and after the match. Team Members Compete for enjoyment. Do their best. Show team spirit and positive sporting behaviour. Play within the rules at all times Respect colleagues, coaches, opponents and the decisions of officials. Keep to agreed timings for training and competitions or inform their coach or team manager if they are going to be late. Wear suitable kit (including shin pads and gum shields) for training and match sessions, as agreed with the coach/team manager. Pay any fees for training or events promptly. Junior members are not allowed to smoke on club premises or whilst representing the club at competitions. Junior members are not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs of any kind on the club premises or whilst representing the club. HOCKEY KIT Some equipment and clothing is provided such as balls, coloured bibs and cones, together with sticks for beginners.
