FEARSOMELY

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)• Father of psychological

thrillers- combines horror and mystery

• Gambling problem, dropped out of college

• Joined army, got dismissed

• Very dark, depressing writings

• Never made much money while alive

• Someone leaves 3 roses & a bottle of cognac on his grave every year- no one knows who or why

Why so crazy?• Father abandoned his

family• Mother died when he

was very young• Step dad was too hard,

then to lenient (bipolar)

• Married his young cousin who died soon after their marriage began

Important to American Lit.- why?

• Revolutionary usage of similes and metaphors

• Pioneer of detective and science fiction

• Revealed the human mind as one of the scariest elements on earth

• Wrote with passionate intensity about the mysterious and dreamlike

Your Assignment• Groups of 2 or three (1 laptop per group)• Read “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe

online together and annotate it.– At least 10 annotations (each one used at least once)– Your first annotation should have all group member’s

names in it• At the end, email your annotations to my email
