NIMR WATER TREATMENT

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

IN THIS ISSUE: NIMR WATER TREATMENT PLANT, HEALTH, SAFETY, & ENVIRONMENT (HSE), WOMEN IN SCC,

MEET OUR EMPLOYEE, SAROOJ EVENTS

Dear colleagues and valued clients,

As the end of the second quarter of the fiscal year approaches,

I would like to share with SCC’s valued clients, its stockholders, and

the various communalities in Oman whom we ultimately serve, the

highlights that have marked this period in SCC’s journey towards “

Constructing Excellence”.

In our annual Board Meeting held in January, 2010 was declared the

year of excellence in construction for SCC. Along the lines of the pur-

suit of excellence, SCC has launched several internal projects aimed

at adding value to its clients, committing itself to value engineering

wherever possible, and creating a culture within the SCC community

that breeds personal and professional success for the company as a

whole, for the separate project team members, and for individuals.

The standard for excellence will be measured vis-à-vis: 1. Profitability

for our stockholders, 2. Stable and profitable employment to SCC’s

team members, 3. Continued unwavering commitment to HSE and

QA/QC.

SCC’s overriding method of accomplishing this has been to focus on

construction and construction management techniques of the highest

professional standards to perform our services to the benefits of our

clients. In this regard, SCC has increased its plant and heavy equip-

ment by 15%, and acquired major marine equipment, most notably the

Catermas (Capacity 1.2 K). SCC has also acquired an additional

70,000m² of land in Bid-Bid to support its operations. The land serves

as an opportunity to develop accommodation, workshops, fabrication

shops, batching plants, and asphalt plants of the highest standard. As

of today, the development of the land is well on its way.

Going forward, SCC intends on continuing to focus on Marine Works

and the Oil and Gas industries where it has successfully implemented

signature projects safely, on time, and to the highest standards of

quality. The testament to this has been particularly noticeable during

cyclone Phet, where SCC’s revetments and breakwaters have been

left intact, and only minor damages were reported with regard to its

roadwork’s and heavy civil works projects.

I would like to assure our clients of SCC’s commitment to serve you,

and assure the SCC team of the management’s commitment towards

greater successes.

I hope you enjoy this edition of the our Newsletter.

Sincerely yours,

Jad Karam

Background:

As a bi-product of oil production, Nimr Oilfield has been producing large quantities of water. This water is

pumped back into deep formations in the ground. Although convenient, this solution is not satisfactory

from an environmental prospective . Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is looking into innovative

ways to treat this water and make use of the clean water without causing negative impact on the envi-

ronment.

In the 1990s, PDO embarked on a pilot project using so-called reed bed technology to treat this water.

Our team took part in the construction of the beds. The project was successful but did not offer the mag-

nitude required to treat tens of thousands of cubic meters of water every day.

In 2008, PDO called on specialized companies to Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) a large scale reed

bed scheme for 20 years which would also include technology transfer .

Bauer Nimr LLC

Bauer Nimr LLC was formed as a locally registered company in the Sultanate of Oman to develop the

project. A highly technically capable team spearheaded by Mr. Peter Hingott, Dr. Roman Breuer, and Mr.

Alex Ditterman took in hand the task of building, commissioning and operating the project.

NIMR WATER TREATMENT PLANT (SC-38)

The Process:

Water is delivered from the oilfield through a pipeline into a mechanical separation plant which extracts ,

whatever oil possible before the water enters into a buffer pond lined with HDPE membrane to avoid any

chance of infiltration. This water is then cascaded down by gravity and distributed to six(6) treatment

trains of reed beds by special multifunctional structures. Each train has four (4) stages, making thus a

total number of 24 reed beds. In the first stage, water is cleared from hydrocarbons which are broken

down by bacteria that grows near the reed roots. At the end of the fourth stage, excess water is collected

in a channel before it trickles down to a huge Salt field where water evaporates leaving large quantities

of salt to be collected.

The process requires no power, making it sustainable.

Sarooj Construction Company:

Sarooj were awarded the contract with Bauer Nimr LLC to construct the reed beds.

Some indicative figures are :

Area of Project: 6,000,000m2

Volume of cut: 2,500,000m3

Volume of fill: 1,500,000m3

Volume of Rock cut: 600,000m3

Volume of clay and substrate layer: 1,000,000m3

Effective construction period is 16 months

The first part of the project is to be commissioned on Nov 18, 2010, Which coincides with HM’s Sultan

Qaboos Bin Said Birthday.

Local Community Contractors:

In order to ensure that local communities benefit from the project, a strategic decision was made to give

preference in job offers to locally available manpower (male nurses, operators, drivers, watchmen, fore-

men, and journey managers) . Many machines (excavators, tipper trucks, tipper trailers, water tankers,

and rollers) are hired from local community contractors.

5

Temporary works:

A contract HSE plan was put in place prior to mobilization . This ensures a safe job site with minimal to

no impact to the environment . Sarooj established a camp to accommodate 300 people along with of-

fices. For Sarooj and Bauer Nimr, resources were gradually mobilized to reach the level of about heavy

250 machines presently working on site.

The major challenges are:

Producing about 1,000,000 m3 of clay to be used as a sealing layer on the existing leveled ground,

so as to prevent water penetration into the ground.

Cutting & breaking about 750,000m3 of rock, which is hard limestone.

Finding water for the works

Three mobile screening plants are used to produce about 5,000m3 of clay per day taken from approved

borrow pits by the Ministry of Environment and Climatic Affairs (MECA). Using a natural sealing layer

instead of an artificial film such as HDPE liming was an innovative environmentally friendly solution.

In order to break the existing limestone rock three methods are used:

Rock breaking using large excavators (Cat 345 and Cat 365)equipped with rock breakers

Rock blasting in coordination and under the supervision of Royal Oman Police (ROP)

Large bulldozers (Cat D11 or equivalent) capable of cutting through layered rock.

Deep water wells (200m deep) were successfully drilled to satisfy the large consumption of works re-

quirements (nearly 2000m3 per day).

HSE Achievements:

The team of Bauer Nimr and Sarooj have achieved about 2,500,000 Km driven, about 500,000 man

-hour, and more than one year free from any lost time injury (LTI).

This is an achievement that the entire team is very proud of.

HSE Achievements

SCC continuously strives to create a culture of Health, Safety, and Environment among its employ-

ees and their families. One of our core activities is to improve the HSE standards and procedures in

order to stay up to date with new government safety laws and our clients’ requirements. We believe

that safety must be embraced at all levels of the organization starting from the top and trickling

down. Our strategy is achieved by emphasizing on training, tool box talks, incentives, and best prac-

tice.

SCC is committed to building a solid HSE department and focuses on employing Omani nationals

who constitute 85% of the department’s employees.

HANS HUCKE, Superintendant

Mr. Hucke has vast experience in Germany and

abroad. He has worked in Africa; Nigeria, Ethiopia,

Sudan, and Kenya, and in the Middle East; Iraq, Qatar,

and Sultanate of Oman . He has participated in major

infrastructure projects in these countries; including

highways, expressways, airports, dams and industrial

schemes.

“In all these projects, I never left one before its

completion. To me a determinant factor of success for

any construction company, particularly Sarooj, is qual-

ity.The final product should always be in total confor-

mity with the specifications and best practices. On this

prestigious project, the Nimr Water Treatment Plant,

one of the challenges was hard rock encountered in

shallow outcrops over large areas of the site. We are,

however, winning this battle now”. ”I can work for a

long time with Sarooj and I hope they keep getting

large projects so that we can always renew our part of

plant and equipments”.

K.RAMANATHAN, Engineer

Engineer from Srilanka, he worked in the Middle

East; the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , Qatar and

Sultanate of Oman for the last 20 years, with our

group. He has built many civil works on infrastruc-

ture, electric overhead lines access, and earth-

works and foundation.

The quality control, particularly the surveying works,

the selection of borrow pits that can produce the

large quantity of clay to seal the reed beds have

been essential on the Nimr Water treatment Plant.

“I want to see the reeds growing and take pride in

completing the project, I want to see it green”

Recently, the empowerment of women in Oman and their crucial role in the country's renaissance has

been highlighted by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos's directive to accord attention to women. Since inception

SCC has always appreciated the role of women in the workplace, and some of the first employees of

SCC have been women.

When His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, declared 2010 as the year of the Omani Woman, SCC re-

sponded strongly and proudly, to help empower and encourage Omani women to discover their

strengths and self-confidence.

SCC employs Omani women in various departments, mostly notably the engineering department where

our Omani women quantity surveyors, and draughtswomen form an integral and essential component.

The head of Engineering is also a female Civil engineer Rita Sousa who holds a PhD from MIT.

We believe that by contributing to the professional, educational, and personal development of the female workforce, we help contribute to the progress of the Omani family, household, economy, and future gen-erations who can be proud of their mothers and fathers alike.
