CONTEXT

ETSI M2M developed functional architecture. Next step is data models. Many

are already developed by other organizations. How can they be re-used?

In 2012, EC hosted a workshop “Roadmap for the Standardization of Smart

Appliances (Energy Consuming and Producing Products)

Present: E2BA, CECED, Eu.bac, ELC, SGTF, ETSI M2M, CENELEC TC59x

WG7, HGI, buildingSmart Int., OASIS oBIX, OSGi.

Main recommendations:

High-level semantic model is needed, including common vocabulary for appliances’

product information, commands, signals, feedback.

Agree on a common architecture and open repositories with reusable pieces to

create a bridge over the communication layer chaos.

ETSI created SMART M2M TC as a follow-up on ETSI M2M

THE EC “SEMANTICS OF SMART

APPLIANCES” PROJECT 1/2

Goal: Support ETSI SMART M2M as an organization. Provide the material

needed to define the relevant tools and data models for the collection of

devices that helps the EU to reach its 2020 goals regarding the reduction of

greenhouse gas emission and buildings’ energy consumption. Next to that the

ultimate goal is to drastically reduce the cost for communication.

SCOPE

Domains: Homes, private dwellings, common public buildings and offices

Appliances: Home and building sensors, white goods, HVAC, Lighting,

Micro-renewable home solutions, Multimedia and PC equipment

Use cases: Interoperability with construction design tools, facility

management systems, energy management systems, building control

systems, ESCO systems, Smart Grid

Stakeholders: manufacturers of white goods, HVAC, plumbing, security and

electrical systems, lightings, sensors, actuators, micro-renewable home

solutions, multimedia, and computers. And related industry, such as utilities,

THE EC “SEMANTICS OF SMART

APPLIANCES” PROJECT 2/2

Tasks:

1. Take stock of existing semantic assets and use case assets

2. Perform a translation exercise of each model or use case to a common ontology

language and subsequently a mapping between these models

3. Propose a common ontology and document it into ETSI M2M architecture

Timing: finished on April 1st 2015

Smart meter

natural gas or

electricity

represents actual

measurement

965m3

Semantics are the definitions of the terms:

- Streetname: the name of the street the

building is located

- Town: the name of the town the building is

located in

- Productkind: the product that is measured

by the smart meter

EXAMPLE: SIMPLE ENERGY ONTOLOGY

CURRENT STATUS

ETSI standardised SAREF in November 2015:

ETSI TS 103 264 v1.1.1

TNO is working together with the Energy@Home association (Italian) and the

EEBus association (German) on an extension of SAREF to fully support their

use cases on energy demand and response. The Agora association (French)

is also supporting this activity.

SAREF is in scope within AIOTI as an example and show case of semantic

interoperability

TESTING 1/2

STF (Specialist Task Force) project starting on 14 December 2015

Managed by TC SmartM2M.

Purpose is to develop Conformance test specifications for Smart Appliance

Common Ontology mapped to oneM2M architecture.

It is intended that the STF and TC SmartM2M will work closely with oneM2M

WG TST (Testing) on this project.

Purpose is to test SAREF into the communication framework and to test the

mapping to oneM2M.

CONCLUSIONS

SAREF gets more and more momentum, not only on energy efficiency but

also in the IoT domain.

ETSI has standardized SAREF and is working on the maintenance

A STF will start work on testing on the 14th of December

Together with Energy@Home and EEBus TNO is working on an extension of

SAREF to fully support their use cases
