Arnie Maves. He was 87 years of age when he went to be with Jesus. It seems like just yesterday, that I was dating his daughter (my wife) Janet. To be honest I was scared to death of him. You see, I had nev- er dated a preacher’s daughter. I remember he caught me kissing her on the couch in the living room. I just knew I was in big trouble, but he later told Janet it reminded him of two fawns rubbing noses. The really hard part for me was when we got engaged. Janet told me that her Dad was old-fashioned and expected me to formally ask for her hand in mar- riage. I told Janet I wasn’t going to do it. For one thing he was Presbyterian, and I was Baptist, and I wasn’t sure how he felt about her becoming Baptist. For another thing, and I know you won’t believe this, but in those days I was very shy. I told Ja- net, “I can’t do it.” So she said, “If you will come inside, I will get my parents and tell my dad that you want to marry me.” Well, I thought I can handle that. Janet went into her parents’ bed- room while I waited in the living room. They came into the living room, dressed in pajamas with robes. They sat down, and Janet’s father said, “What’s this about?” Janet said, “Chip has a question he wants to ask you.” I thought, I’d been set up. Anyway, I was stuck. So I said, “May I have your daughter’s hand in marriage?” He looked at me and said, “You’re asking if you can have my daughter….” He paused and looked at me very sternly. Then, with a smile he said, “You can have her.” Man, was I relieved! Of course, this began a 38-year relationship. I could not have had a father- in-law who was more supportive of my calling than he was. While I was in semi- nary, he believed that, along with educa- tion, I needed some practical experi- ence. “Dad Maves,” as I called him, was a missionary/evangelist with a ministry called P.E.F. (Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship). He traveled all over America and other countries, doing revivals. While I was in school, I went on four missionary trips to Jamaica with him. I was a part of the team that would conduct revival services all over the island. I will never for- get the experiences I had: street preaching, conducting revivals in churches, and one-on- one street evangelism. Talk about getting me out of my comfort zone! Everywhere we went, Dad Maves would share his faith. Knowing that he was a Calvinist and believed in Predestination and Election, I asked him why he would travel all over the world to share the gospel if God was going to choose who he was go- ing to save. Here is what he said: “I don’t know who the elect are, and so I have to preach the Gospel to everyone.” As well as preaching revivals and area crusades all over America starting in 1969, he traveled to some 80 countries around the globe. Some time in the 1980’s he started a ministry behind the “Iron Cur- tain.” He would travel to these Communist countries as a tourist, but once he arrived, he would be taken somewhere to hide from the secret police. At night they would take him to secret church meetings where he would preach to hundreds of people, who would risk there lives to come to the services. Most of the preachers were either killed, imprisoned, or exiled. So a big part of Dad Maves’ work was to train laymen to preach and pastor these churches. He con- ducted secret schools all over Hungary, Ro- mania, and other communist countries. If he had been caught, there is no doubt he would have been imprisoned. I can’t tell you how much I admired and looked up to him. I al- ways referred to him as a modern day Apos- tle Paul.

Strengthening the Minister’s

Family

by Dr. Tony Rankin

Therapist, Speaker, Author

Your family should be the most important thing in your life. There is life outside the job as a minister and independent of the church. The minister’s family needs to have an identity outside of the church role. Helping each family member set priorities, learn how to navigate from childhood to adulthood, and negotiate the unexpected situations in life are important elements in addressing the ongoing needs within the

family structure.

Having a healthy family is not a secret formula but it does take intentionality or purposeful choices. Although there are traits and characteristics of idealistic families, each family needs to decide what they want their family to look like. This will result in more meaningful interactions because there is ownership and less pressure to be like the family down the street or across the Fellowship Hall at church. This will lessen the power

of comparison.

Healthy Family Checklist

Ask each family member to look at this list and choose five (5) items that would be the most important to them. Sit down together and talk about your answers. Are there any common answers? Talk about what plans you

will make in order for some changes.
