Dr. Crawford’s Welcome Statement

This Ghana Study Tour will lead you to where you can see, explore, and experience major historical sites in Ghana: Accra, Elmina Castle, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Asante region, cultural ceremonies, Kente weaving and the numerous other arts, colorful market places, and above all, the most friendly people in the world. Dr. Clinton Crawford, the tour leader, who has traveled to 8 other African countries, is also the author of Recasting Ancient Egypt in the African Context, 1996. He is a professor at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York where he teaches the History of African Art among other courses about African civilizations. See Ghana in a way that television or anyone else will ever show you.

DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1 - Departure from NYC on to Accra, Ghana. Meals on flight. Day 2 – En route to Accra (via Casablanca, Morocco) for early morning arrival. Day 3 - Arrive in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, the largest city in Ghana with over 3 million residents. It’s a bustling city full of commerce, market places, music and energy. Travel to Cape Coast by modern air-conditioned bus. Overnight in our hotel in Cape Coast. B/D Day 4 - Cape Coast Castle visit in the morning after breakfast. This castle is the largest and most famous of the three edifices which housed captured Africans before they were transported across the Atlantic Ocean. Visit Elmina Castle and the environs. This is the second largest of three castles on the coast of Ghana situated in the Central region of the country. Enjoy the beach, surf and people. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 5 - Visit the J.W. Essel Prep School. Overnight in our hotel. B/ D Day 6 - Visit one of two hanging bridges of its kind in the world at Kakum Forest National Park. This is an experience we cannot miss. See the pristine rainfall forest as old as time. Nature walk is optional. Overnight in our hotel. B/D

Day 7 - Early morning journey to Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Kingdom and the home of the kente weavers, where we will visit the museum of Akomfo Anokye (founder of the Ashanti Kingdom) and the sword he placed in the ground over 300 years ago to maintain the unity of the State. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 8 - Full day in Kumasi to visit the Arts and Crafts Village; the Manhyia Palace Museum, See the Yaa Asantewaa statue. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 9 - Return to Cape Coast via Assin Praso, the river crossing and path where our ancestors walked en route to the slave dungeons; visit Assin Manso where our Ancestors took their Last Bath before boarding the infamous slave ships. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 10 - Visit Anomabo to see Fort William, a lesser-known, but very important slave castle. Free afternoon. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 11 - Free Day. Redemption March and Candlelight Parade in the evening. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 12 - Emancipation Day Celebration. See the Grand Durbar and procession of Chiefs. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 13 - Early morning drive to the Western Region to visit Nzulezu─a village on stilts in the river. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 14 - Leave for Accra. Visit Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's Monument and W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture. Overnight in our hotel. B/D Day 15 - Early departure for the US. Arrival in NYC Meals on flight.
