4 p.m.: Captiva CommunityAssociation building. Business meeting,election of new Board of Directors,presen^iofcof awarrJsi?Thei974 annualmeeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Conser-vation Foundation, Inc. will begin at 4p.m. at the Captiva Community Associ-ation building with reports on theactivities of 1974 and a financialstatement. An election of new directorswill be followed by a presentation ofawards.

5 p.m.: Social hour at the CaptivaCommunity Association building. Thebusiness meeting will ajourn for a socialhour at the same location. The guestspeaker for the evening, the inter-nationally respected author and advocateof animal protection, Cleveland Amory,will attend the social hour to meetFoundation members.

8 p.m.: Sanibel CommunityAssociation building. An evening withCleveland Amory followed by coffee andthe opportunity to have Mr. Amoryinscribe a copy of "Mankind?" Theevening program will begin at 8 p.m. atthe Sanibel Community Associationbuilding. The public is invited to attendthis program and the coffee hour whichwill follow.

The Sanibel Community Associ-ation is planning a big political rally forTuesday night, November 26 at theCommunity House for 8 p.m.

All registered voters are urged tocome and meet their candidates face to.face. Every candidate who has filed to runfor- City of Saiiibel- Commissioner 'hasbeen invited to attend and all haveaccepted. Each candidate has been givena list of questions to be answered andthree minutes in which to do: so. Noquestions will be allowed from the floorduring the meeting. However, allcandidates will remain after the formalmeeting to meet individually with anyonewho would like to ask specific questions.

"We are doing this as a publicservice," states Dr. John Willard,president of the Community Association."We realize there are a lot of new voterson the Island and a lot of these candidatesare new and now that we have decided forHome Rule we need to.get acquainted ona first name basis with those who will berunning our Island. That's why thedirectors of the Association held a specialmeeting after last Tuesday's dinnermeeting and decided to do ,it. We haveasked John Shepherd to organize it andact as moderator."

Special arrangements have beenmade to handle the parking as a verylarge crowd is expected. Tuesday, Nov.26, 8 p.m. at the Community House.

Gordon Tracey is a young man oftwenty-five years who was raised andwho has lived his entire life on Sanibei.Avery outspoken young man, Mr. Traceypurports to represent youth and the

working man on Sanibel.Mr. Tracey graduated from

Edison Community College with an A. A.While enrolled there, he served asPresident and Vice-President of CircleK, freshman and sophomore Senator inihe Student Senate, Inner Club CouncilChairman, and he is listed in 'Who's,Whoof American Junior Colleges."'

After receiving his A.A., Mr.Tracey attended Stetson University inDeland, Florida, from which hegraduated last year with a B.A. inWJstnrvv-indPoliticaJScience. , ,

. Mr. Tracey is a member of theKiwanis Club of South Fort Myers.

He will be part-owner and*"manager of the New Sanibel TrailerPark, which, barring complications,should open by next fall. At the presenttime, Mr. Tracey is night watchman andconstruction office manager of the NewTrailer Park, where he resides.

When asked about his motives forrunning for city council, Mr. TraceyStated: "It's common knowledge that Iwas against incorporation because of thered tape involved. I'm completely behindplanning and zoning; don't get mewrong. I'd just like to see the peoplehave more of a say in terms of repealingtaxes and ordinances. I'd like to see thecouncil and the people in general havemore control of their city manager. Theway it's set up in the charter, they can't.We voted for home-rule - I want to seehome-rule run by home-people."

Mr. Tracey qualified for can-didacy on November 15.

Five years ago EDITH and RAYESTES from Boynton Beach walked thelength of the beach from Tarpon Bay Rd.to the Lighthouse. They commented,"Sanibel is changing. It shows progressbut we liked it the other way."

Fifteen years ago MARGARETand BOB MEDLIN from Raleigh, NC,came on the ferry to Sanibel. Theybrought their five children and had to finda place large enough for all of them, sothey stayed at the Hurricane House-. Theyfound a great many shells. "Now," theysay, "Sanibel has changed - has lots ofbuildings. We liked it better before."

OLYMPIA and ROBERT ULREYand their children, BOBBY JR., LORI,CHRIS and BURKE are here for the thirdtime. They dearly love the place.

BASIL OSMIN, who lives about 2miles from the South Seas Plantation inCaptiva, paid us a visit. He enjoyswalking and exploring the Islands.

"We highly recommend bicyclepaths," say HENRY G. and LaVERNEPEARSON from Miami. They told us thatthey liked Sanibel best when they cameby ferry - that it is getting over populatedand with inferior architecture on thebeaches." They added, "Periwinkle Parkhas retained more of its appeal than therest of the islands."

DAVE and DOTTY KILE, son anddaughter-in-law of MERLE and BILLROSSMAN, who live on Sanibel, broughttheir 12 month old daughter, VICKIE, fora visit. They come from Cleveland, OH.They feel that Sanibel is different now,growing too fast. But they like it as muchas they ever did.

CAPE PLAYERS KEEP 'EM LAUGHING

The climax of 'See How TheyRun,' as performed by the Cape Players,was evidenced by the audience'slaughter. The play is a very complicatedcomedy with all sorts of misunderstand-ings - several peeple hiding in the closet,a man in his skivvies chasing a Russian3py through the house, three men eachsaying he's Penelope's husband, and aBishop (Penelope's uncle) coming to visitamidst this confusion.

Betty McCharen, who plays Ida,the maid, is positively dynamic. Even herquickest glance and gesture are incharacter. She's a cross between the witof Carol Burnett and the housekeeper ofMaude.

Nancy Murin, from the first lines,is such a righteous (yet hinting ofgossipy) citizen that you really becomeaggravated with her. She smacks ofold-maid "auntishness." Although, asMiss Skillon, she's never had anything todrink before that night, as a novicedrunk, she has probably the mostconvincing and comic drunk act I've seensince Dean Martin.

In the role of Penelope, PennyBlom made her debut. This must be whyshe spoke her lines so .mechanically,devoid of any expression. A personviewing this can't get lost in what's goingon onstage, as one's constantly remindedthat it's just a play. Perhaps with moreexperience she'll be able to have somepersonality come across.

A parody of Sherlock Holmes wasplayed by Hal Stott. Of course his toneportrayed this, but more important to thispart w .̂re his movements. He slowly,decisively stepped up and leaned into hiswitnesses while asking his questions (inthe same manner) when trying toestablish the identity of the Russian.

Most actors were in characterthroughout the play. Excluding MissBlom, it was a professional performance.It's too late for you to see "See How TheyRun," as it ran last weekend, but I wouldurge you to see the Cape Players in'Hello, Dolly,' in January. You'll seesome outstanding performances.

NEW SANIBEL TRAILER PARK

In the weeks to come, operationswill be progressing more rapidly on thenew Sanibel Trailer Park. The parkstretches from Dunlop Road to the back ofthe Martin property on Pine Ridge Roadand is bounded by the Ding DarlingWildlife Preserve on the back side. Theentrance road is off of Dunlop Road,across Periwinkle Way from theGasparilla Restaurant.

The 22.8 acre tract of land is to bedivided into 95 units with each having a2500 square foot lot. The buildingarchitecture will be designed to give theimpression of a Polynesian or tropicalisland setting. Aside from the four-acrelake for swimming and boating, the newSanibel Trailer Park will feature fullrecreational facilities such- as a heatedswimming pool and a recreation room -complete with ping pong tables and otherdivertissements.

The proposed trailer park passedthe County Zoning Board with afour-to-one recommendation this pastAugust. At the October meeting of theCounty Commissioners, the project wasonce again approved by a vote offour-to-one. The final plan approval isstill pending. This requires that buildingpermits, drainage permits, arid the likebe submitted en toto for perusal and finalapprvoal. The mechanical drawings ofsewer systems and other technical finepoints are being handled by Howell F.Davis and Associates, engineers.

POSTAL SERVICE REITERATESUNPAID DELIVERY POLICY

Postmaster Paul Adams todayreminded customers that effectiveSunday, November 17, the U. S. PostalService intends to discontinue deliveringmail on which there is no postage.

Postmaster Adams said the newpolicy was instituted because of the highcosts being incurred by the Postal Servicein its attempt to deliver such mail.Officials estimate that such costs totalapproximately $18 million annually.

In announcing the new policy lastmonth, Postmaster General E. T. Klassensaid, "It is unfair to burden the vastmajority of mailers with costs created bythe few who mail without prepayment ofpostage."

After November 17, letters mailedwithout postage will be returned tosender if there is a return address, or tothe dead letter office, instead of beingdelivered to the address as postage duemail as has been the custom. Postalofficials will attempt to find the sender ofunpaid mail and return if for a slight fee,if there is no return address.

"Naturally we realize that some-one could inadvertently forget to put astamp on a letter or that a stamp couldcome off prior to cancellation, so we urgemailers to be sure to include a correctreturn address on their mail," Post-master Adams said.

When my last newsletter camefrom the Caloosahatchie Marching andChowder Society came the other day, Ihad a vision. I suddenly saw Fort MyersBeach world-famous - the Newport ofSouthwest Florida. How fantastic, Ithought, what names I will be able todrop! Warran Casazza, Lou Tilley, Gloriaand Nancy Bogan, Rafael Lorie, theGoodacres, Fred White and many more. Iwill rub my fingernails on my sweatshirtwhere the lapel should be, look coylyskyward and say, "I knew them whenCMCS was barely started and there wereonly 6 or 8 boats in a race. Hot Damm."

Actually, never mind the namedropping. The fun thing is that CMCS issuch a fantastic sailing club. Its members

• are so involved, its officers so dedicatedto enlarging the opportunities and thesatisfactions. They not only have racingunder NAYRU rules with CMCShandicapping, but they offer the smallerboats a chance to compete under, otherhandicapping systems such as M.O.R.C.Now they have added another trophy inthe Windjammer class.

The handicaps for this class will beestablished by a rather simple and freemeasurement factor and will not affectthe regular CMCS handicap rating.Performance ratings will not be a factorfor Windjammer handicaps which will beestablished by LOA, LWL and three sailmeasurements which can be made onyour lawn with a tape measure. If youhave a production boat, the manufact-urers LOA and LWL are acceptable —and there are no restrictions as to boatlength.

For an additional fee of about$1.00, you indicate your choice ofcompeting for the Windjammer trophywhen you send in your CMCS race entry

form. You will, in effect, then be sailingtwo races in one as it is not possible toenter the Windjammer class only. Anadded bonus is that you CAN win in bothclasses.

Dues for this super outfit are only$15 a year (because of strong anti-inflation sentiments in the group). Fornew members there is also a $5 initiationfee and $10 for the burgee which brings itto $30 for the first year. And it's abargain.

If you like to sail, it doesn't matterwhether you know how or even if youhave a boat; they will welcome you andyou will get even more than-you put in.There are opportunities to crew on otherpeople's boats. (I got my start sailingwith Drex and Zona Moore, bless theirhearts.

You'll pick up a lot of sailingknow-how just from listening at themeetings; you'll meet some fascinatingpeople and - unless I miss my guess -you'll be owning your own boat beforeyou know it, if you have to make ityourself out of a cracker box. Besides, allthose sailors have an instinct for sniffingout decent boats for sale and can give youa few steers in the right direction.

In parting, I would say to all youdear friends up there in the snow, that,yesterday the butter melted in my galley,(forgot to put it in the cooler), the sky is'beneficent blue with fat little whiteclouds; a playful breeze is beckoningacross green riffles in the water, andseveral hundred sailors can't be wrong.Fort Myers Beach is the place to be.

Francis Bafley

Francis Bailey, co-owner andmanager of Bailey's General Store, haslived on Sanibel all his life. The electedCommissioner of the Lee CountyMosquito Control Board at present, Mr.Bailey is the only candidate for citycouncil to hold an elected post.

Mr. Bailey also serves thecommunity in his capacity as Boardmember of both the Sanibel-Captiva andFt. Myers-Lee County Chambers ofCommerce, Board member of the SanibelCommunity Association (of which he isalso past president), member of theConservation Foundation, and member ofthe Audubon Society.

In the past, Mr. Bailey has servedas a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, asDirector of Lee Memorial Hospital, asDirector of the Lee County ElectricCooperative, and has contributed to theSanibel-Captiva Planning Board.

When asked his reasons forrunning, Mr. Bailey replied: "I wouldn'tbe running if I didn't want to see thisisland a success. I'm for planned growth,but that doesn't mean I'm for stiflingcommerce."

Mr.MacKehzie spent the last fifteen years ofhis federal service in Washington, wherehe served successively as Chief ofEnvironmental Health Research, De-veloper and Director of the National AirPollution Control Program, DleputyDirector of the Bureau of DiseasePrevention and Environmental Control,and Deputy Administrator of theConsumer Protection and Environ-mental Control Service.

Mr. MacKenzie also served onvarious interdepartmental committeesand boards, was chief of a scientificexchange mission to the U.S.S.R. in1962, and served on internationalcommittees for development of coopera-tive environmental research withGermany and Japan. He was aconsultant to the World. HealthOrganization from 1960 to 1973.

Since coming to Sanibel, Mr.MacKenzie has been active in theSanibel-Captiva Planning Board, ofwhich he has served as president for thepast three years. He is a member of theBoard of Directors of the American Lung.Association of S.W. Florida and hasworked in the formation of theEcological Confederation of S.W.Florida. He is also a member of theSanibel-Captiva Conservation Founda-tion, the National Audubon Society, theNature Conservancy, and the WildlifeFederation.

With respect to his candidacy andhis hopes for the Island, Mr. MacKenziesaid: "The islanders have spokenoverwhelmingly in the referendum votefor the need to control their own destiny.Members of the new city council willhave heavy responsibilities to providft. *ulana-use plan tor the Island and toimplement it, as well as to graduallyimprove the municipal services neces-sary to keep the Island a good place tolive."

Vewion G. MacKenzie has livedon Sanibe! for five and a half years. Mr.MacKenzie is the Assistant SurgeonGeneral IKetired) of the United StatesPublic Health Service. He has anengineering degree from M.I.T. and acertificate in Advanced Managementfrom the Harvard Graduate School ofBusiness Administration.

Mr. MacKenzie has worked formore than forty years in planning,carrying out, and directing environ-mental control programs. During World War II he -

was assigned as liaison officer andconsultant to the War Production Boardon materials allocations for health andsanitation purposes. He also superviseda program to assess and provide nationalneeds for sanitary engineering servicesand facilities in support of the war effort.

Post-war, Mr. MacKenzie wasassigned to the American Mission forAid to Greece with responsibilities forplanning and conducting post-warrehabilitation of health services inGreece.

Mrs. Claire T. Walter, owner andmanager of Sanibel-Captiva Real Estate,first came to Sanibel and purchasedproperty in 1957. Mrs. Walters was bornand educated in New Hampshire whereshe was elected to membership of theNational Honor Society and served on theZoning Board of Littleton, New Hamp-shire. She first entered the real estatefield in 1961 and became a Realtor in1964. At the present time, she is a .member of two Realtor boards, FortMyers and Fort Myers Beach.

Mrs. Walter is a qualifiedresidential appraiser, in accordance withthe 1968 Principles and Techniques ofResidential Appraising as set forth by theSociety of Real Estate Appraisers. She isalso on the Board of Trustees of "TheProfessional Society of Real EstateAssociates," a member of the FloridaRealtor's Association, and a member ofthe National Association of Real EstateBrokers.

Locally, Mrs. Walter's civic dutiesinclude membership on the Board atDirectors of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamberof Commerce (of which she is currentlythe secretary), membership to the Ft.Myers-Lee County Chamber of Com-merce, Board membership to theSanibel-Captiva Conservation Found-

Porter Gosp

Porter Goss, a resident of theIsland since early 1971, has been activein community affairs both on Sanibel andelsewhere in Lee County. He was bornin Waterbury, Connecticut in 1938. Amagna cum laude graduate of YaleUniversity, Mr. Goss is an Armyveteran with ten years experience in thearea of international politics on thefederal level.

In terms of commercial interests,Mr. Goss was at one time part-owner ofIsland Boat Rentals. He is presently aco-owner of the Casa TurquesaCottages. In keeping with his businessventures, Mr. Goss is active in theChamber of Commerce and has servedon the Chamber's Action Committee.

Other duties Mr. Goss performsin the community include membershipsin the Sanibel Causeway RefinancingCommittee, the Sanibel-Captivacon-servation Foundation, the advisorycommittee of Sanibel Tomorrow,director of the Sanib el CommunityAssociation, director of the Children'sCenter of the Islands, arid chairman ofthe Community Association's IslandImprovement Committee. Mr. Goss isalso president of the Board ofCanterbury School in Fort Myers.Finally, he did much to help organize theLee County Commissioners' tour of theIslands in 1973.

Mr.Cbss has great faith in thefuture of Sanibel. When asked for astatement concerning his candidacy, Mr.Goss said: "I've got great hopes for thecommunity of Sanibel. I've got fourchildren to raise here. I'VE GOT SOMEIsland business interests that I'd .like tosee prosper. I and my family arethoroughly committed to Sanibel'sfuture as a unique place to live and work.I have been a strong advocate ofhome-rule from the beginning because itseems to be the only practical way toaccomplish my hopes for the Island."

Mrs. Walter has been a strongsupporter of wildlife conservation andrational growth of the Islands. In herposition as a Realtor and member of thecommunity of Sanibel for the past 15years, she has advocated the type ofgrowth that will retain the fragileecological balance of the Island and willmaintain the unique quality of life whichdraws people to Sanibel.

C. Dnane White

Before moving to Sanibel in 1969,C. Duane White was the Director of,National Accounts for the RichardsonCorporation of Rochester, New York.Before holding that position, Mr. Whitetried his hand at teaching and theministry, among other things.

Since moving to the Island Mr.White has been active in manycommunity organizations, not the least ofwhich is the Sanibel Chamber ofCommerce. He has served on the Boardof Directors of the Community Associ-ation since 1970, holding the presidencyof that organization from 1971 to 1973. Inthe years 1971 and 1972 he was presidentof the Lions Club. For the past threeyears he has served as chairman of theBoard of Directors of the CommunityChurch. At the present time, Mr. Whiteis the first vice president of theSanibel-Captiva Planning Board and amember of the Board of Directors of theSanibel Library.

Mr. White and his wife, theformer Charlotte Kinzie of the SanibelKinzie family, owners and operators ofthe old Sanibel ferry for many years, ownand manage the Casa Blanca Apartmentson Periwinkle Way at the present time.

With respect to the upcomingelection, Mr. White said: "The widemargin of victory for incorporation isevidence of the determination of thecitizens of Sanibel to direct the destiny ofthe Island. It now remains for them tocomplete the task by electing a capable,responsible city council composed of menand women who know the Island and arefamiliar with the many problems facingit. I am confident that the electorate ofthis Island will choose wisely from amongthe slate of candidates and will take cah.that a well-balanced council, represent-ative of all aspects of the Island, will bechosen to do the work before it."
