Back in Time

From By the Seaside. No 26 22/2/1988 “As the work of constructing the Sandgate Pier was getting under way in 1882, so was planning by a number of business men in Brisbane to form a ferry service to connect Sandgate with other points in Moreton Bay, Brisbane and especially the Redcliffe peninsula. Without piers at other vital spots on the peninsula, it was of no avail to form, or have ferry services listed to these points. We find that on 25.10.1881 contractor Mott prepared to build the Woody Point Jetty, and work actually commenced six days later. It was envisaged that the jetty would be ready to receive passengers who might travel to Sandgate on the new railway, due to be opened in 1882. Certain criticism was levelled against the jetty thus built, in that it was too narrow, and no “lady” could pass the trolley (a truck on steel rails) with safety. Also “the shore end of the jetty was dangerous.”

what’s in a name? Taigum - 4018 It is claimed that Cabbage Tree Creek was known to the local Aboriginals as taigum or taigam which was the Aboriginal word for lawyer cane (Calamus Sp.) Early maps show the area as “Tighum”, and “Tighum Creek” was shown as an alternate name for Cab-bage Tree Creek. The name has been in use since the 1850s. In the late 1800s, Taigum was proposed as the name for the new local divisional board, but it was not adopted. In the early 1900s, the name came into use through Frederick William Drew who operated the Tyghum dairy in Beckett Road which is now part of Bridgeman Downs. Taigum had to wait until 11 August 1975 for official recognition by the Queensland Place Names Board as a suburb name. The suburb boundary was altered by the Minister for Natural Resources on 4 August 2000. [Source: Naming Brisbane-Origins of Bris-

bane’s Suburbs & Locality Names. By Beryl Roberts.(2013)]
