THE GOOD NEWS Page 3

Out of Ashes Comes Life

All my hope on God is founded who will all my trust renew, who through change and chance will guide me, only good and only true.

God unknown, God alone, call my heart to be thine own.Mortal pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray our trust; what with care and toil we fashion, tower and temple, fall to dust.

But thy power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. (ELW #757)

The world watched in disbelief during Holy Week as a massive fire blazed through Notre Dame Cathedral, the beautiful eight-hundred-year-old Paris cathedral. A collective cry of horror was heard around the globe as we saw the steeple tower collapse and much of this great building turning to dusty rubble.

Later in the week the news got better. Over 1 billion dollars has been pledged for restoration. Notre Dame Cathedral will rise from the ashes. Of course, that’s a positive thing, but in fact this is a building we are talking about that burned because of an accidental fire. It’s a magnificent, awe inspiring building, but still a building. The most important thing about any house of worship isn’t the building itself, but the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ that’s proclaimed through Word and Sacraments. Holy Communion is the meal of the Risen Lord, shared every Sunday in both grand and very simple places of worship. We do this as a weekly celebration of Easter. Nourished and fed God’s people leave worship and go into the world participating in God’s dream of shalom.

In Holy Week it came to my attention that three historic African American houses of worship in Louisiana recently burned to the ground. These fires weren’t accidental they were hate crimes, set by arsonists. When these stories were lifted up, people also responded, resulting in over 2 million dollars collected through social media.

Easter begins to dawn on us, out of ashes comes new life. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, that’s our story, not God’s story. This God of resurrection brings life out of ashes and breathes the breath of his Spirit into dust, calling us to life again! Now we are the dwelling place of God as the Risen One lives in and through us! Easter begins to dawn on us. Share that Good News!

Great thy goodness, ever enduring; deep thy wisdom, passing thought;splendor, light, and life attend thee, beauty springing out of naught.

Evermore from thy store newborn worlds rise and adore.Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done,

high above all praises praising for the gift of God’s own Son.Christ doth call one and all: you who follow shall not fall. (ELW #757)

Peace in Christ, Pastor David Jorstad

THE GOOD NEWS

What is your "Why"?

“I came that you might have life, and have it abundantly.”John 10:10

What is your "Why"? Why are you involved in the things you're involved in, why do you care about the things you care about? Why are you drawn to Christ?

Why do you care about the needs of those around you? Why are you part of this community of faith?

At a recent Immigration Task Force meeting, I met a woman who introduced me to this question. She had recently returned from serving in the Peace Corps and came to the task force meeting because she wants to be involved in local politics and make a difference in her local community. She shared some of the best practices and ideas being used in nonprofit and social justice organizations, including this question, what is your "Why"?

Since then, we've been asking this question in a congregational Council, we've used it with my daughter's girl scout troop, we've been asking it in local clergy gatherings, and we continue to ask it as we work for justice and peace in our communities and our world.

What motivates you? What is your "Why"?

So often organizations focus on their "What". What do they do, what they produce, what did they hope their outcome will be, what they offer, why they might be better than their competition. But research has shown that the “What” question does not motivate people. People are motivated because of their “why”.

I’ve been asking myself this question- what motivates me? What is my “why”? I want to see the Kingdom of Heaven here on Earth, as we pray in the Lord’s Prayer. I want to dream and wonder what our world and community could look like when God’s realm of Shalom shows up. When it does, I want to recognize it and celebrate it.

I want to be reminded that we are the body of Christ, that none of us do the work of ministry alone, that we can rely on each other and God. When we do this, when we trust, we get to see God's love to flow through us, changing lives. And when I’m tired, worn, weary, I want to remember that I am a little child of God, and God, my parent, allows me to take rest, to let go, to stop. My identity as “Beloved Child of God” is my most important “Why”. That’s why we do what we do. That’s the origin of everything.

Coming from a place of “why” grounds us, reminds us of our purpose, keeps us going when the going gets tough. It lets us let go of unimportant and allows the important to take priority.

What is your “Why”? Ponder this, consider it. Let it motivate you and give you energy to pursue it, knowing that our ultimate Why is God.

OAKS INDIAN MISSION On behalf of the Social Action Committee, Anne McDaniel and Doris Payne would like to thank SMLC for once again supporting the children of Oaks Indian Mission during our Lenten offering. Through your generous donations and the support of our Social Action committee, we are sending $2,091 to support Oaks college scholarship fund. Simply put, WOW! One of the Oaks high school seniors Doris and Anne met last July was named John; and not only is John preparing to go to college in the Fall to study theater, music and science, he was baptized on Easter Sunday! It is a good feeling to know that our church family recognizes the importance of outreach to Lutheran ministries like Oaks, and even more exciting to know that our simple act of kindness will open doors and opportunities for Oaks children, like John, in the years to come.

Blessings, Doris and Anne

THE GOOD NEWS

A New Columbarium will be installed soon at San Marcos Lutheran. Why do we provide a columbarium at San Marcos Lutheran Church?Fifteen years ago, our congregation recognized the need for a columbarium, a final resting place for our loved ones’ cremains. This reflects the ancient Christian practice of burying loved ones in a grave yard around the church sanctuary. In life and in death we are united in the Body of Christ. The niches in our current columbarium, located on either side of the sacramental stained-glass window, are practically full. The Congregational Council authorized the installation of a new thirty-five double unit columbarium which will serve our congregation well into the future. The new columbarium features a beautiful marble front set in a wooden cabinet which will match the stain of the wood in our sanctuary. This unit will sit in front of the back wall of the sanctuary on the side nearest our original columbarium. What are the costs? There will be a pre-installation sale price of $1,300 (double unit), $650 (single unit). Once the columbarium has been installed the niches will be sold at the regular price of $1,800 (double unit), $900 (single unit). We anticipate the columbarium will be installed by May 15, 2019. This cost includes the construction of the columbarium, the urn, the niche, the inscription on the marble niche cover, perpetual care and maintenance of the columbarium. For more information, pick up one of the Columbarium brochures which are on the tables in the church entry way. You can also contact either of the pastors.

Our original goal was ten baskets and we ended up delivering 30 baskets full of kitchen, bath, laundry, and children’s items; three complete dish sets; 14 toaster ovens, and other assorted supplies. Per Jeri Bachman, Program Manager of Rapid Re-Housing, “We want to thank SMLC for your very kind donations!!! This generosity will make an immediate difference in the lives of our clients.” Special thanks to Marit Greunke, Tricia Oliveira, Danielle Kottke, and over 20 SMLC Sunday School Children for helping us wrap baskets and make cards; Don Arney, Linda Breen, Doris Payne, and Josie McDaniel for helping us in the delivery of everything; and to all the donors who made a difference.
